Hey, guys. I said something to Lori about Dr. Wax. She said that he does a LOT of interviewing, and used to be on the AdCom, and may join it again for next year. And there's not really a pattern of rejections vs. acceptances of people who interviewed with him. But, they can certainly ask him to attempt to be more on time (unless of course he's coming out of the OR), to interview in private, not take casual phone calls, and not go online during the interview.

Additionally, she encourages anyone to let them know if they had a poor/inappropriate interview experience with someone. She says they always tell applicants on interview day to let them know if they feel like an interview wasn't conducted appropriately, and the committee doesn't judge applicants on reporting stuff like that (at least at OHSU, anyway). But what I tried to say and couldn't get the words out for was to specifically tell interviewees that they won't be judged for reporting a poorly conducted interview. (So if you talk to her, you might want mention that specifically.) Hope this helps!
 
Got my financial aid letter. Funny they should call it "financial aid." About $70,000 in loans per year, w/ $25,000 of them at high interest, unknown private loans. Going to throw up. In case anyone is curious, OOS tuition this year is almost $52,000, not $49,500 (and supposedly slated to rise each year). Gahh :scared: In state isn't so great either, but not quite as ominous... God help us

Wow...thats crazy!! Last week I told my PI who works part time on the hill about the price for instate tuition and he just flipped out saying "WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING UP THERE??" Oh well...the things we'll do for OHSU...haha.
 
I feel your pain guys. I am a native Oregonian, born and raised in the Willamette Valley. Currently, I am a third year student at an Ivy League med school that gives me a need based grant that pays my tuition. I borrow about$25,000 per year to cover living expenses and will graduate with total debt of about $100,000. I also was accepted to OHSU, after going through the insane admissions process. The full meal loan deal from OHSU would have left me with twice as much debt as my private school. So I took the money from the private school, left Oregon, and never looked back. Although, I do plan to return home after I finish residency. I like OHSU and love Portland but the admissions process is seriously screwed up, and it is a financial disaster for students.

I have seen countless posts on SDN where the advice is to go to the cheaper state school rather than the prestigious private school. Save your money and attend your state school. As an Oregonian, these comments always make me chuckle.

Hey guys - I interviewed with Dr. Wax too and although he did seem a bit... distracted.. I have heard some people speculate he uses that as a tool to see if you get frustrated or annoyed or if you remain professional and compsoed. Side note - I was admitted about 4 weeks after my interview with Dr. Wax.

I have considered it....What other sites do you know of? It seems like the majority of money out there is awarded to students for their final two years (after they've shown their stuff, I suppose). I'm also crossing fingers for the long-lost relative who wants to finance my education as the son he never had.
 
There's also a promising National Guard scholarship, where they give you a stipend for $1900/month for a minimum of six months. For every month of stipend that you get, you have to spend 2 months serving the National Guard as a physician (after your residency). That's not too bad, if you want to pay off some loans, or pay off some interest, of just take less loan money out from OHSU. 👍

Plus, I don't think you ever go overseas, and its mostly for domestic duty.

I am also curious to know when to expect movement on the alternate list. I have been accepted to a school on the east coast, but I would prefer to stay in Oregon. I have searched OHSU blogs like this one from previous years in order to provide an idea for what we might expect this year.
In 2005, the first mention of movement on the alternate list was on May 26th, and the person leaving the post had been accepted from their #4 position.
In 2007, the first mention of movement on the alternate list was on June 4th, and they had accepted through #24 at that point.
That was all I could find regarding the original movement on the alternate list in previous years. While this information may not be reliable for this year, OHSU does seem to be consistent in having May 15th as their final decision day, and so, it would not be all that unreasonable to assume that they start choosing people from the alternate list around the same time as well.
Additionally, I have been able to find the amount of movement that has occurred in previous years on OHSU's alternate list, some of which has already been posted earlier in this blog:
In 2003: #90's, 2004: #64, 2005: not sure, 2006: #98, 2007: #77, 2008: #57, 2009: #?

Hey thanks for the archived info n8tureman. Thats definitely helpful. In regards to the waitlist, I would expect it to start moving sometime at the end of next week. I think once they get all the alternate letters in by this friday they'll be able sort things out early next week and get this long summer wait rolling. By the looks of these past numbers, if youre ranked 50 or below you got a pretty good shot at matriculation. Even if youre in the 50s to 70s you got a decent shot too. Lets just hope this year stays the course and we don't see some crazy outlier like only seeing 10 people taken off the waiting list. Good look all!!

Thanks for that archive digging! And let me add to your list from the search I did that in 2008, the waitlist started moving on Thursday, June 5th, and people ranked through #19 were accepted that day.

Thanks for the addition. The anticipation is driving me mad now. I'm thinking the earliest the alternate list will move is on Monday, but most likely by next Friday. Hopefully the list will move fast. Even though I think I have a good number, I am still scared. Good luck to everyone else who is waiting for their number to be called!
 
I was originally thinking that OHSU would post the status of the alternate list by tomorrow, but now I am unsure. I looked at the original email I received from OHSU indicating my placement on the alternate list and noticed that it said they planned to post the status of the alternate list by mid-June. However, it is possible that they begin sending acceptance offers to people on the alternate list before updating their website. Has anyone reading this blog been accepted from the alternate list? Good luck to everyone in their decisions. For those still planning to attend medical school, I would advise having some fun this summer because it may be our last truly free summer. I actually have plans to go to yosemite for the first time this weekend. It would be so sweet to get a response from OHSU before leaving. Either way, I hope the list moves fast because I have a sweet place near the tram lined up, but I need to make a decision before July 1st if I want the place. I would imagine that the majority of the waitlist movement would occur before then? I suppose we will find out soon enough. I think I'm currently checking the OHSU website over 10 times a day and this blog several times a day, but few people have been posting anything lately. Anyone else have plans for something fun this summer or any thoughts regarding the OHSU alternate list?

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know I withdrew (regular M.D.) yesterday. It broke my heart to do, because OHSU was my top choice. But with an illness in my family and the enormous cost of OOS tuition, it just didn't pan out. Sad, but I wish you all the best of luck and hope one of you gets my spot soon so you don't have to wait anymore!! :luck::luck:
 
Just got back from my trip to Yosemite. It was a lot of fun. I had a flat tire on the way, but fortunately had a spare, and saw a bear while I was at the park. I checked OHSUs site first thing this morning. They have finally started movement on the alternate list. They are only through number 5 at this point. Hopefully they are updating as they go, otherwise, this doesn't look like a great start compared to previous years.

I hear you man. I also couldn't take it so I went down to admissions a few days ago only to not get any good information. I wonder what they do all day long down there, because they said they weren't sure when movement would happen and that they were currently calling back people they didn't hear from by May 29 (which doesn't make sense because the waitlist e-mail says your spot is forfeit if you don't reply back by that day). They also weren't sure if they would be calling or e-mailing people to let them know if they got off the list. I think last year they did start mailing things out around this time? They also said they would be updating the waitlist status on the website the same day that any movement happens.

The other strange thing is that I have not heard of anybody getting in this month (around May 15), even though the waitlist e-mail says the 115 entering spots have been filled.

As for summer fun, I agree that it is essential, some of my other friends starting school this fall are doing the same. I've come to the conclusion that taking a break is better than staying at a boring temp research job that doesn't pay much more than a McDonald's salary! (which is the case with most healthcare field jobs for premeds, even with a masters).

You mentioned that OHSU was contacting people who hadn't responded to their offers yet. Might this be an explanation for why they are only on #5 on the alternate list? Seems like an unusually slow start, hope this isn't an outlier year like RGMass03 mentioned previously.

I hope that's the reason. The fact that they are only up to #5 makes me quite worried. Guess there isn't much us waitlistees can do besides wait :scared:

Yeah I was told by the office yesterday that they were double checking to make sure those who didn't respond to the alternate list e-mail did in fact have no intention of being on it. They just want to make sure everyone received the e-mail. I'm guessing cuz they had some e-mail issues with their secondary this year. They said they still need to sort through some of that but once they do there should be more movement on the waitlist. It should be soon they said. Also I wouldn't read too much into the waitlist at any given moment. Because say the list moves from #5 to #17 in one day. This most likely doesn't mean 12 accepted students dropped their spots in one day (I mean it technically could happen, but unlikely). Its more likely that a few spots opened up and quite a few kids between 5 and 17 on the waiting list simply didn't want to be on the alternate list for OHSU. So this is something you can definitely view as a positive because you could technically be #15 on the list but be the next person in line for an acceptance. Plus if you look at the thread from last year, there was huge initially movement on the waitlist and then it just suddenly hit the wall a few weeks later. So whats this all mean?? It means to stay optimistic! We still got two months of waiting. Anything can happen...especially with OHSU. Hope that helps ease some nerves!

Thanks for sharing that information. That helps to ease my nerves a lot. My primary concern now is that I need to make a decision on a place in Portland by July 1st, and I have a bunch of medical testing for my backup school on the east coast which is also due by July 1st. I have no medical insurance now that I graduated from college, and really don't want to pay the several hundred it will take to do all of the ridiculous tests they want me to do.

If you're talking about things like basic vaccinations and titers, you might as well just go ahead and do those now. OHSU also requires quite a few immunizations and other medical tests before matriculation...and the school medical insurance doesn't cover these initial things anyway. It blows, but you might save yourself the hassle of just getting them out of the way.

Thanks, I was thinking the school on the east coast just had an unusually ridiculous medical testing requirement, but it sounds like OHSU may have most of the same requirement. For the school, I need to get three seperate titers: mmr, hep a, and varicella. Also, they require a meningitis vaccination, a 2 step TB test, a stool culture, nasal culture, and a rather extensive physical examination, all in addition to the usual medical history form. Is this fairly similar to OHSU? I suppose I could just call up either admissions or the student health center tomorrow to find out. Thanks again.

As far as I remember...

MMR - yes
Hep A - I think so
Varicella - yes
Meningitis - I don't think so
2 step TB - yes
Stool - nope
Nasal culture - nope
Physical exam - nope
Medical history form - oh yes

I am pretty sure that you'll need a Tetanus shot and the Hep B series for OHSU though. There may be other requirements, but if so, I don't remember them.
 
Just thought I would let those of you on the waitlist know that I talked to a friend who is on the waitlist at #8. He said he hasn't heard anything yet as of today.

I'm sure this doesn't comfort anybody, but I just thought I would share the information.
 
i think i mighta gotten your spot lima! not sure if i'm going to accept though. i'll be going to ohsu for sure but i don't know - an extra year of oos tuition + extra work + extra year. now that it's much more real, i'm not so sure anymore...thoughts?

I personally think that the MD/MPH joint degree program is awesome, and particularly if you are interested in getting a MPH and integrating that MPH portion/perspective into your medical career. As someone who knows that she will be getting a MPH in the future, it was a very hard decision to withdraw because I think that that integration that the program allows is a rare and valuable find in a medical program. Also, Dr. Stull and his crew were amazing during my "second look visit," and you definitely feel that they have a tighter, more familial bond than most of the med school students/faculty. Also, I think there are scholarships available to all of the MD/MPH students, so the cost of that extra year is defrayed a bit, and once again, if you KNOW you're gonna get a MPH at some point . . .

Anyways, I'm all for the MD/MPH program that has been set up. Dr. Stull has nothing been supportive to me. The only reason why I didn't choose to go is because I was offered a full ride at another joint degree program. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions or if you want any other second opinions.

Totally agree with Lima about the MD/MPH program being worth it, as long as you plan on integrating the MPH skills/perspective into your career. And it does seem like they have an awesome group going, and Dr Stull seems really knowledgeable and supportive. It is a very competitive program for a reason - I say if you really want it and will make use of it, go for it!
 
Thanks so much for your advice, Lima & DS! Much appreciated 🙂. I used to think I want to go into peds for sure, but now I'm interested in other specialties that are completely different like reconstructive plastic surgery, etc...and while I am still very interested in public health, I wonder how useful an MPH in Epi would be for different specialties as a practicing physician, and getting into competitive residency programs in the first place.

hey all -- not sure if this is helpful, but i withdrew about two weeks ago. i was accepted to ohsu back in april and still hadn't received my package by the time i withdrew. i got into my top choice off the waitlist, but loved ohsu so much that i was trying to hold out just a little longer to compare the packages. when i gave up waiting (i felt bad with waitlist stuff), i called to see what i needed to do to withdraw they said they still hadn't mailed my package (over 2 months after being accepted and way past may 15th).

anyhow, who knows where the bottle neck is happening, but i thought y'all might want to know how slowly all the steps are happening.

Thanks for sharing your experience with OHSU. I don't understand what takes OHSU so much time to get things accomplished. I understand waiting until may 15th for the final acceptances so that it theoretically gives everyone an equal chance, but OHSU seems to be off the ball when it comes to being efficient. Someone mentioned previously that OHSU said they were contacting people who hadn't responded to their offers by now. That is nice, but considering they sent emails and letters several weeks before they were due, they should be a little quicker about contacting those people than they seem to be doing. Maybe I'm just too anxious/need a fairly quick response, but the way the admissions staff at OHSU are doing their job is starting to make me concerned about the school in general. What are other peoples' opinions about this? Additionally, has anyone else called OHSU lately to see where they are in the process at this point? Thanks in advance.

I agree that the system of admissions here is not known for its efficiency. They are all working their tails off, and the students in the classes they admit are amazing groups of people, but 'efficient' is not one of the words I would use to describe them. I don't have a ton of experience with every department in the medical school. And I've heard and experienced that the Dean's Office is sometimes super helpful, and sometimes super unhelpful. But I think the lag-time of the Admissions Office has by far been my least favorite experience here. And since then, everything else has been far better and (mostly) more enjoyable!

What I'm trying to say is, in my experience, the speed at which the Admissions Office operates doesn't appear to correlate with the quality of education or the experience you can have here at OHSU.

I sincerely hope the waitlist starts to move more soon! Every year it's slightly different: two years ago we didn't even get our waitlist numbers until June, but the waitlist started moving by June 6th, and kept moving for a while. So my thinking is that the big initial chunk of waitlist movement hasn't happened yet, but I am hopeful that it will! Best of luck!
 
Does anyone understand the yellow highlighting on the "alternate list" title on the md admissions page?
 
As if I were not already obsessive about checking the webpage. This extra emphasis will surely further my unhealthy, incessant viewing of the website.
 
I think its a hint for people to stop calling them...!
I must admit though Ive been very tempted several times, just to see if I could eek a granule of information out of someone.
And the wait goes on....

Finally some significant movement! Hopefully they will move a bit more soon. I just got into an even better place in Portland close to the school, but I need to sign a lease asap. Hopefully things will work out well for all of us. Keep up the morale.
 
I don't know if it helps any, but when I was on the waitlist, I found out they only update it once a day. It let me not feel like I had to check it every hour. Good luck!

they send an e-mail (subject: OHSU application update) with your acceptance letter attached as a word document. it says they'll be sending a packet within a month that will contain the forms and pre-reqs needed to matriculate. it would be worth contacting the office now about any of the pre-reqs you're not sure you meet, in case you end up having to take a class. once the packet comes for us waitlisters, it will be too late to sign up for a summer course.

it looks like you don't have to do anything to formally accept their offer until the packet comes with the forms to sign. there is no specific mention of a deadline, although they do say to notify them at your earliest convenience if you're not interested in accepting their offer. I was holding another acceptance when I came off the waitlist, but OHSU didn't contact me about it or mention it in the offer letter. however the other school did give me a decision deadline to meet. so even if OHSU seems laid back about it, if you're holding multiple acceptances, your other school might demand a quick decision.

hopefully the waitlist gets moving some more next week. i'll bet early july it'll really pick up. looking forward to meeting fellow classmates soon!

they send an e-mail (subject: OHSU application update) with your acceptance letter attached as a word document. it says they'll be sending a packet within a month that will contain the forms and pre-reqs needed to matriculate. it would be worth contacting the office now about any of the pre-reqs you're not sure you meet, in case you end up having to take a class. once the packet comes for us waitlisters, it will be too late to sign up for a summer course.

When you say prerequisites, do you mean something other than what they have listed on their MD admissions page: for example, the fact that genetics and biochemistry are required?
