did anyone else see the portion about a free clinic?

"Information about staying with one of our medical students will be sent around the 2nd week of September after the students return. The Free Clinic information will be included in that information as well. "

is that a free medical clinic... or a free motel-type clinic?! Do i not have to book a motel room? 😱

It's a free medical clinic for patients who live in that area. They give us a tour so we can think about volunteering there.

ugh just got placed on pre-interview hold

Don't know if this was addressed before - didn't read the beginning of this thread - but definitely do the free clinic tour if you can! It's cool to see what students are up to, and you get a free dinner afterwards at a pretty nice place. If you haven't already learned this, you will learn that finding free food is awesome and you should take advantage of every opportunity that you can.

Anyone know what percentage of interviewed folk ultimately get accepted? I think I heard Epi mention awhile back that nearly half of those interviewed get accepted... which is an exciting prospect.

I'd be nice to hear the actual number, if anyone happens to know it.

Well, according to my handy-dandy, obsessive-compulsive excel spreadsheet, last year (I think) the post-interview acceptance rate was 53%. Which....yay!

ps- why am I always the one to answer your questions?

where do you get these numbers from, LET?

USNews, I have the subscription thingy. I can find out the actual numbers (number of apps, number of interviewees, number of acceptances) if you'd like from the actual website, but I calculated all the % chances a while ago and had them on an excel spreadsheet.

Hi guys. I was a little confused by the interview invite email. How and when do we send in the statement of legal residency form that's attached? Also, for the postcard, do we just delete on microsoft word the sentence that says something like "I do not want an interview I'm withdrawing my app" and then email it back? Just don't want to screw anything up.

Thanks in advance!

This is data from US News and World Report:

568 Interviewed, 304 Accepted

*take into consideration that many people who are placed in the acceptable pool withdraw their application. It is not as though 264 people do not get accepted after the interview. So even though you have a statistical chance of 53.5% of getting accepted after interview, your actual chance is higher because people withdraw from the acceptable pool.

Woot so we're like 53% of the way to becoming a rising doctor. Sorta. Fascinating.

And indeed you are always there for me LET. I may as well just start sending my questions in PM format instead of asking them publicly

Here's my next question... Why is Chubbs' account on hold? I want in on this SDN drama. Which moderator's mama did he insult this time?

Bring the statement of legal residency w/ you to the interview. I just deleted the "I do not want an interview" sentence and emailed it back...I think I might have put a little check mark next to the "I do want an interview" sentence, but I don't think that's necessary 😛

 I can't believe how many of us are in the same situation. Thanks guys... saved me the trouble of waiting the weekend out to contact their office.

The check is $60 made to UC Regents, like all the other UC's, correct?

I dunno if they are so much research focused as they are competition focused. I believe UCSD wants to compete with UCLA, UCSF, and Stanford as one of the best schools in California, which they do, but I think it is important to them that they keep that image (for example, they have a higher MCAT score then UCLA, which is amazing because I think most people would rather go to UCLA). I am not hating on UCSD in anyway, its a great school and I would love that secondary, but I think my focus on primary care and 32 MCAT hurt me a bit....

oh well, doesnt really matter now, I will wait till november to hear something.

Do they not like primary care?

yes, II = interview invite and I = interview

Can someone elaborate on what "hold" means? I keep seeing it everywhere, from what I am reading it is something one would hope not to get..?

Means they haven't rejected yet, and would consider you through a different pass through. But if they like the people they interview, you (I) won't be seen

oh, thanks! Sounds like a good/interesting event. And I guess theres still the option of staying with the studetns, which I'll probably take them up on.

Congrats to anybody who has an interview invite from this or any other school so far!

Remember to post them on the interview invite threads 🙂 It's helpful for other SDN members, not only this year but also in the future!

Thanks!

this secondary is such a beast :|

i took about 4 of my other essays, which had important milestones in my life, and fiddled with them for a few hrs to make one long "autobiography". It's not so bad once you get rolling, but it defintiely is a long one! Good luck =)

My first UC interview. After a moment of extreme happiness, I already started to get nervous. Argh!

AR: 7/15, SR:8/4, SS: 8/9, C: 8/11, II: 9/2, I: 10/16

at least there is still hope!! How long after were you complete were you put on hold?

yeah, i really do hope so!
i was complete 8/5 and put on hold 8/27, so 22 days.

so why doesn't ucsd like primary care? or is that not true? I thought they were strong in it?

keep in mind that usnews primary care rankings are based on dubious statistics like percentage of students entering primary care residencies. this of course has no bearing on how well the school actually prepares you for primary care. also if your school doesn't volunteer these statistics to the usnews people, they give you some arbitrarily poor value which drops you down in their ranking system. this of course is to 'encourage' schools to supply information to usnews to boost magazine sales.

also i can't begin to count how many years ucsd med students have debunked the 'competition' myth but it invariably comes up on all the sd.net threads about ucsd. first it was students competing against each other, now it is the school competing against other UC's. so i will simply echo the sentiments of many others that it is not true; yet people love to latch on to spurious urban legends to give them some semblance of confidence in deciding which med schools not to go to. my personal recommendation is that factors like family, friends, location, and atmosphere are more important than rankings, pbl, and grading system. just go with your gut feeling.

i chose ucsd because i already lived here, i had friends here, i love the weather, and the school is really laid back and i have not been disappointed. gunners are few and far between, and certainly not more numerous than any other med school. but really there's no amount of convincing or statistics that can change your gut feeling. any US med school is going to be great, so pick one, don't look back, and be happy 🙂

Thanks for the reply 🙂. I was asking about primary care because I had discussed my desire to go into primary care in my essay to UCSD and a few days later came on here and read someone thought they may not get a interview invite or something because UCSD doesn't especially "like" primary care. I may be misquoting, but I was confused about this. I am not sure if it is "strong" or "weak" but I had assumed it was pretty good, since it's ucsd.

I agree with you about ucsd being full of cool people and not the crazy competitive place it's made out to be, I have heard from friends. I hear it may be getting even better soon with some curriculum changes? thanks for the response!

Hmmm... has anybody received a secondary recently? This is the only one I'm waiting on. =(

hey xrev, i just got mine last friday [verified 8/13]

Thanks for your response food, when did they acknowledge your primary? I was given notice 8/25/2008. I realize its later in the application cycle and so they must have more apps to go through, but I just wanted a time frame.
