Thanks! Trust me, I was really surprised I got a secondary. I thought for sure I was getting rejected. Until there is a rejection, there is still hope. 🙂

Same here...but the fact that only about a third of secondaries get interviews, I'm kind of thinking that this is the end of the road for me 🙁

But I've gotta be optimistic! 🙂 Sorry for being a wet blanket; I'm just happy that I got a secondary at all. At least, if they reject me now, they'll have done so with my complete application, so I won't feel short-changed...

I have the same feeling..doubt I'll get an interview. But, they must have seen something they liked to have granted a secondary. There is still hope! 🙂 But, feels good to have gotten this far.

Don't mean to freak everyone out, but UCSF's first interview date is actually today🙂

This may be a strange question to ask, but on the UCSF secondary did anyone notice the number on the bottom left of every page? Call me crazy but I was wondering if this is some form of numbering system indicating which person in line you were to receive a secondary. It is definitely possible that it is something as simple as a version number, date etc.. However, thought I would ask if anyone remembers / can look up what theirs says? Mine is 0608..

Mine says 0608 too.
I called UCSF last Friday and asked if they review apps in order of completion. The answer was no. I have been complete since August 1st, and as of last Friday my app had still not been looked at. I really want to interview there too, more than any other school.

Mine also says 0608. Maybe it means June 2008.

Only on SDN 😉

It does. They messed up last cycle and sent out many secondaries from the cycle before, so they marked all pages to avoid repeat the error this cycle🙂

Just curious, how do you know your app has not been looked at? I was complete on 8/1 as well. Thanks!

I asked them on the phone. After giving my AMCAS and name, they said it has not been reviewed yet, but will be sent for review shortly.

Maybe you want to give em a call too? I'd be interested to hear what they say to you. It's just frustrating that people complete way later than 8/1 already have invites, but then again, I have that frustration with tons of schools so what's new?! Arg

if they don't do it in order of completion, is it based on scores/schools? cuz if they keep reviewing things in a random order... will ours ever get read? haha.

I was complete on 8/1 as well so I called them today and they said that they had just (as in, today) moved to a new office so their computers aren't even set up yet.

Oh goody.

darn, theyre being so slow!!! i'm so anxious to know whether i have an interview!

hey dulcina, i love your avatar! brings a smile to my face everyday.

If you don't mind, could you please give your dates of completion and rough stats?😀

Interview invite! I received it late on a Friday night, which was kind of weird, but I'm grateful!

Just wondering-- is your status page updated to show that you have an interview?

It will be updated, and that will be the last update on your status page. Unlike UCSD or UCLA, UCSF doens't post post-interview updates, unfortunately.

haha yay, i'm glad it makes you happy! (it makes me happy too! 😀)

GRATS ON YOUR INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, congrats to everyone who has received an interview so far. Glad to hear that the ball is finally moving along.

I hope I get one and good luck to everyone else....

Cheers!

I'm dreading the thin envelope any day now...I'm expecting it, but it's still going to be so depressing when I receive it... 🙁

I don't know how to console you, so here is a sad puppy 🙁

UCSF is not too crazy about numbers, so your lack of clinical experience may be the reason you are rejected, at least that's the only one I can think of. Don't be too upset, this process is indeed somewhat random. They may make a completely different decision about you if they know you better than from a sheet of paper, but that's the limitation they have to work with, and it often results in likely regrettable decisions.

I really cannot believe you were rejected pre-interview. Are you going to appeal?

hmm...haven't really thought about it. if i get good news in late october from the schools i have interviewed at, probably not, since I would be happy going to any of those really...

if its all bad news....i dunno, we'll see I guess.

if you look on last years thread, one fellow wrote: "I think that they REALLY appreciate commitment. I was initially rejected post secondary. I appealed and got an interview. Got high priority and sent a letter of intent. Got onto the waitlist. All in all I sent a TON of letters, and two extra letters of intent. I was pretty relentless...." and he got in.

More than one actually appealed, and got in. The worst you can have is a second rejection, which doesn't change your outcome. UCSF really looks for well-rounded applicants with diverse backgrounds, if you think that describes you, point it out in your appeal. Tell them how you are a good fit for UCSF, more in terms of diversity/experience/committement to serve than numbers. Good luck.

I appealed a post-secondary rejection last year and got rejected again. My background (age, life experiences, disadvantaged status, etc.) are way different from 99.9% of the applicants. In fact I got rejected from all 30 medical schools I applied to last year. Appeals work only for VERY FEW people. Unfortunately, med schools only care about superficial diversity.

The last statement is a little extreme, but I understand your frustration. Maybe your message didn't get through, or maybe they really have a reason, I don't know. The process is hair-splitting for applicants as well as adcoms. Dean Wofsy goes to bed everyday agonizing over the kids he and his committee have to reject, and one of them might be you last year🙁. They know more about UCSF, its student body, etc than you, and if they feel the hunch that you might not be the best fit, they will reject you. The problem is, they don't really know you, not even after the interview. Their hunch thus can be totally wrong, and one director told me once that they "sometimes offer acceptances that we later regret". But there's no way to be 100% thorough and fair. There are 7K+ applicants, many of them, if accepted, will go on to be excellent doctors and make UCSF proud. But there are only 150 slots.
