hey can some of you guys talk about why you love UCSF so much? other than the fact that it is in san francisco...

specifically, what kinds of opportunities in international work are available? and public health? i can't seem to find much info on their website.

Last month, when people received acceptance letters, did others also receive waitlist/rejection letters?

The office did confirm that they'll mail letters out on the 20th of every month, but I wasn't sure if that included waitlist/rejection letters.

Also for those of you accepted, did your status page change yet?

Nope, status page didn't change once accepted. I didn't hear about anyone receiving any waitslists or rejections yet post-interview...

Letters might not be mailed out today. They have to do some administrative things first, since they just had the meeting recently. The person on the phone estimated that within the next week or two, the people who were discussed at the January meeting should hear something by snail mail. Both good news and bad news letters will be mailed out at the same time.

So you think that includes waitlist and rejection letters?

That's what the person on the phone seemed to imply. Everybody who was discussed at the January meeting will receive a letter telling them the result of that meeting, whether it's an acceptance, waitlist, or rejection.

I don't know if UCSF rejects post interview, or puts everybody on the waitlist, though. Does anybody know?

thanks for calling shemarty.......morrrrrrre waaaaaaaiting haha

I was told by Dean Wofsy during his opening talk that everybody who interviews will receive one of three outcomes: acceptance, waitlist, or a deferred decision (UMich status.. I am still bitter 😡).

edit: Probably relevant; those who interviewed have a slightly greater than 50% chance of getting in.

I love UCSF so much because the students are so friendly and so genuine in a way that I don't see anywhere else (i have been to >15 interviews, with 5 or 6 top ten schools). I say this not because I am accepted (maybe this biases my opinion a little bit). I feel Hopkins students are so enamoured with their school's reputation (oh, we are hopkins students; even the worst of us matches at Mass General); Wash U is a school that emphasizes too much on high gpa and mcat (maybe used to bump up its US News & World report rankings), but the new building is fantastic; Harvard is great but there is a sense of ivy-league haughtiness around (besides having attended a top ivy leagues for undergrad, i am desperate to go outside); Penn, I didn't get an interview there so I don't know much. This is just my personal opinion so if I offend anyone by belittling your favorite school, I am really sorry!

Oh, in addition, they have Chinese food in the cafeteria (I guess the same for every Cali school). In terms of internatinal opportunites, there is pretty cool fourth year elective at Peking Union Hospital (I think harvard has it too). I would like to go not only because of my personal background but also because China, with 1/4 of the world's populationl, represents 1/4 of the world's patients. With people getting older and the country getting richer, there are so many more opportunities over there. I think one day people in medicine will discover it just like people in business do nowdays

I created a new thread (UCSF Class of 2013) under allopathic schools, but so far I am the only one posting there. Hope we can have more in the next of days! Good luck to those who are anxiously waiting

sorry for posting so much, but I want to add something to this. before I went to UCSF for interview, UCSF definitely wasn't even near my top choice. There was something that really impressed me during the day. When we sat in at a 2nd year class, the material covered was basic biochem (every premed who has done research probably knows the material). However, the students actually paid attention to what the teacher was saying and were asking fairly good questions. By the end of the lecture, the students gave a huge round of applause to the professor for giving a good lecture. The cohesiveness and enthusiasm are just so contagious

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit! Come to Accepted Students Weekend, us 1st years are going to try to make it enjoyable for yall. Also, many of us were undecided last year and ASW really helped us figure it out. So your attendance is strongly encouraged. Congrats and good luck with the rest of your schools. Whatever decision you make will be a wise one. Congrats again!

Its definitely too early for me to ask, but when is Accepted Students Weekend? I'm just trying to get a sense for when different schools have them so I can keep those weeks free.

First weekend in May I think. But don't quote me on it. We actually have the meeting tomorrow so I'll get back to you.

Yes it is the first weekend of may, but the dates are May 1st- May 3rd.

For those of us still waiting for interview invites, I got in touch with the office just now, and apparently they will interview through April! I doubt, then, that this is the last week invitations go out, which is what was posted here earlier. There is still hope!

MSTP interview season doesn't last that long. If you haven't heard back, call Jana asap to find out if you will be interviewed for MSTP.

I called, and was told that they're still waiting for some files to get to them from the med school admissions office. She seemed to imply that these people hadn't been looked at yet, and that more interviews would probably be going out. Though of course if you've got more in-depth information I'd love to know it 😀.

I'm not expecting an interview for MSTP at this point, but after all it ain't over till the fat lady sings (aka I see the rejection letter in my mailbox 😛).

That's why you need to poke and call. The MSTP interviews will be over by the end of Feb., and you want the MD committee to review you before that. It's one thing if they or the MSTP office decide to reject you, but it's another if they don't even get to you before all is over. I don't know if the MD committee can fast-track MSTP applicants, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

does anyone know when the january batch of letters will be mailed out and when we should expect to receive them?

The next batch of ACCEPTANCES will be mailed on January 28th by snail mail.

The next batch of letters which are NOT acceptances were already mailed out "earlier this week." (I'm guesing this includes PRE-interview rejections as well as POST-interview rejections/waitlists?)

So I guess the bad news will arrive before the good news. Here's hoping that we DON'T get mail from UCSF in the next week!

If anybody gets any bad news 🙁 , please post here so the rest of us know that the letters have begun to make it into people's mailboxes.

Hi everyone,

I've heard that UCSF discourages applicants from sending a post-interview letter of intent. Does anyone know for sure if this is true?

Thank you and good luck!

I don't know the answer to the above question...

Did *anybody* get *any* mail from UCSF today? :scared:

In December I called and asked about this and they made it sound like they appreciate updates and such. I sent a combined update/letter of interest and was accepted. I don't know specifically about a letter of intent, but I don't think it would hurt you in any way.

Don't they have a green sheet that they hand out so that people who interview can update whatever they like after or during the interview?

I think it would mean they welcome post interview updates.

Checked. No mail yet. I'm scared shemarty. I wish you were here to hold me.

Haha...

Well for now, no mail is definitely good... but as awful as it is to wish for this, I wish we knew whether some non-acceptance letters had already made it to their final destination.

Hi again everyone,

I just called the admissions office. Nancy said that the rumour I heard is not true.

Good luck!

phew...nothing today. praise Jesus! I know what u mean...I'm farther from SF than u are tho......

i interviewed on october 29th and live in sf, so assuming that i was reviewed this time around and rejection letters were actually sent out "earlier this week" I can tell you that I haven't gotten anything yet; and mail would only take a day to get to me.🙂 And to what KaiaRose was asking about, ucsf said they discouraged direct contact with the interviewers post-interview; so you can send thank you notes but they won't reach the interviewers until after the process is done. Updates and letters of intent are ok.

Well, to possibly ease some of your fears. I live in the SF Bay Area, and today I received a letter post marked on Jan 21st.

I was placed on a "high priority position for further consideration after we have completed all of our interviews....... While we are not in a position to offer you a place in the class at this time, we want you to know that we are very impressed by your accomplishments and very pleased that you are considering UCSF for your medical education. You can expect to hear from us again in LATE APRIL with more definitive information."

So there ya go. Good luck to all of you that dont get mail this week, and feel free to go to any of those other great school that you got into.

wow...good luck to all of you guys!

Did you guys get a chance to see workout facilities (not that that is the most important aspect of a medical school)?

I don't go to the gym often, but it's right across from the main hospital complex. It's usually not crowded, and you'll sometimes encounter your favorite faculties there LOL

The gym at Mission Bay is awesome. Or so I heard. They also have an outdoor climbing wall.

Sorry it wasn't good news, Jonnymed. 🙁

No mail for me today... SF Bay Area, too.

Aw, thanks frostedflakes. Here's hoping for another 6 days of NO MAIL!

You guys....I know it is hard to not focus on waiting for the final outcome for these school, but there has to be something to keep you guys preoccupied. I'll be honest, I think about this process alot, but I also have been really successful in not making myself crazy over it.

I definitely wish you guys the best of luck...I just hope no one is going crazy over this.

👍:luck:

I totally see your point, but after my Stanford waitlist letter... yes, I am going a little crazy over this UCSF decision.

I also got this letter today (sent to NC, for those waiting on the east coast). I was wondering if anyone is actually being rejected yet, or given anything other than a "high priority position" or an acceptance? That title sounds great, but won't carry much weight if everyone is in the same boat...

i don't think everyone will be in the same boat come april/may... if memory serves correctly the wait list is tiered, and there is some waitlist movement. people do get rejected post-interview...it's not like some schools where almost everyone gets shunted to the waitlist.

got the "high priority position" letter today as well

Me too, I'm "high priority". I think I know what that really means, "please don't call us, we'll reject you later." I hope I'm wrong though, still waiting for that elusive first acceptance.

Sorry to hear that 🙁

Regley, you have UCLA so that's fantastic!

Brushfire, where are you geographically? I'm sure your 1st acceptance will come soon 🙂

I'd love UCLA, but I'm not in there. Maybe I wrote something wrong earlier. Also, I don't want to seem to negative. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview at these places and even an interview, even a secondary is something to be proud of. I was just having a vent haha🙂

Whoops, I mixed the two of you up! Brushfire is in at UCLA, and Regley, *you're* waiting on your first acceptance.

Good luuuck!
