2008-2009 UMass Secondary Application Thread

OK I was just looking at last year's thread - again.

There is one difference to keep in mind between the years - last year the waitlist went out after/during second look while this year it was well before it. I don't know what that means.

But, the dreaded Rejections - which are so lovely they go out by snail mail - started arriving in people's mailboxes 1 week after the waitlist went out.

So since last Friday was Good Friday, and it was likely adcom met last Thursday, there could be some bad news coming this weekend or over the next few days if they drew up the rejection list.

On the other hand, there were some acceptances that went out after Second Look last year as well... so maybe if you hear nothing over the next week or so there could be good news on the way!

Of course this is all speculation and completely neurotic - ok back to work.

Oh for the love of G-d. I wish they would just get it over with! It has been exactly 7 months to the day since my interview, and I am officially out of patience. If I've been rejected, then I would appreciate a timely rejection so that I can start apartment hunting in New Orleans. Why do they even bother with the postage of snail mail? They should just send a mass email update to the rejections the same way they did for the wait-lists so that we can all have a good cry and then get on with our lives.

I'm beyond neurotic. Now I'm just annoyed. As my brother helpfully pointed out last night, I could have given birth to a premature-but-viable child in the time they have been sitting on my application! Seriously, UMass. Stop jerking me around and just reject me already.

Hey umass_MD, did you go to UMASS Amherst undergrad? It'd be cool if you did, because that's where I went.
 
Hahaha!! I love this thread and I will be very upset if we are not all at UMass together next year!

Side note: being waitlisted totally sucks, but it's pretty awesome to not be neurotic on Fridays anymore. My first stress-free Friday in months! Anybody else feel this way, or am I have I just officially gone insane? Ha..

You'll be relieved to know that you will probably be full throttle neurotic by next Friday when you start to wonder why they haven't taken you off the waitlist, even though so and so gave up his spot, etc.

And I forgot to say, virusgirl, I loved your post about being annoyed. I completely agree. I think this whole umass process is unnecessarily cruel. And I think reform is needed!

no, sorry. i went to umass boston. i hate that name, by the way, but i haven't figured out how to change it without starting a new account. any suggestions Lacheln?

I went to UMass Boston, and Umass Amherst too!

I was at Amherst from Fall 02 to Spring 04, and I was at Boston from Fall 04 to Spring 07.

Were either of you two there at those times? I was in the bio program and the Earth & Geographic Science program... at UMass Boston I started the Sustainability Club and did all that earth day stuff it it rings a bell....
 
Virusgirl, you are HILARIOUS. 🙂 Waitlists suck, but at least you're feisty about it.

Donors to SDN can request an admin to change your name. Zipmedic is an admin.
 
Envirodoc, I think that you were there before me. I started UMASS Amherst in Fall '04 and didn't actually begin the pre-med program until Fall '06.

It's almost 4:00 and still no news! Arrrrggghhhhhhh. I guess that my strategy of obsessively checking my inbox/status page isn't working out...
 
Friday is really making me wonder what not getting waitlisted means... good or bad? good or bad? good or bad? It's so hard to know.

I went to UMass Amherst! Fall 03 - Spring 07. Where did you live? I doubt we had any classes together...I wasn't really pre-med at the time. I lived in OHill for three years and North (the new apartment complex) senior year.

I'm missing green skittles ?! Well for the love of Pete, they should have told me that when they made the offer. Clearly, this would have made a large difference in my decision. And here I thought I was doing ok with my protein bars...

Also, since I am currently doing ALL my o-chem analysis via TLC, even the most ghetto LC/MS imaginable is so lust-worthy that I stand by my earlier statement. I mean...if they're so ghetto they should get new ones...and give me an old one!

Amen. I have been rejected from 11 of my 12 schools thus far, and I'm beginning to feel that it's going to be a clean sweep. If so, just do it already!

Hey all - Just a reminder that everyone's invited to Tavern on the Square in Central tomorrow. We are going to meet at the Starbucks that's right off the T (corner of Prospect and Mass Ave) at 7pm, and walk over to the Tavern at 7:15pm. Lacheln, is this an accepted-people-only thing? It sounds like fun, but I totally wouldn't want to put a damper on everyone's happiness about getting accepted.

Oh my gosh, of course not!!! I wish everyone who's near Boston would come, but I also understand it might be a recipe for more stress to hang out talking about it if you're waitlisted/haven't heard...I know a couple of people aren't coming for that reason. There is at least one waitlister who's is coming though, so you wouldn't be alone (read: please come 😍).
 
Well, last Monday people got news... Here's hoping all sorts of acceptance letters, solid gold wait list letters, and bags o' money go out tomorrow!

Not a word yet 🙁. And yes, I applied MD/PhD. Why can't they just accept me! My application is not THAT crappy. :laugh:
 
Any idea about how many people get wait-listed every year??
I just want to know if we have solid chances...
 
Here is a humbling thought:

Using 2008 census data, I have calculated the number of residents per state medical school for all states that have a state medical school (42/50). Of those 42, Massachusetts is the 6th worst state to be a resident of, with 6,497,967 residents for our one school. We are actually worse than California! (6,126,111 residents per school). The only states that suck more than us are, in descending order of suck: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Virginia, Washington state, and Arizona.

Note that I have not taken into account actual number of medical school seats, nor the number of actual medical school applicants, but you get the idea. 🙁

I knew there was a reason why I get annoyed every time a Californian starts whining in pre-allo!
 
And Virginians have EVMS and VCU, which are private but still show significant preference for IS residents, so I don't think they deserve their #3 suck position. That puts us at #5. And I think Georgia should get bumped off the list as well, for reasons that would be impolite for me to voice in a public forum. 🙂

So, functionally, Massachusetts is the 4th worst state to be a resident of in terms of medical school admissions. Take heart, fellow pre-acceptees! We are statistically handicapped by our state demographics.
 
I heard that there were about 125 people wait listed...take that as you may see it...guess it really matters where on the list we are...
 
this may seem like an obvious question, but seeing as it is pertinent to this thread I hope somebody will answer it. How does the waitlist actually work? Can you get rejected off the waitlist or does UMMS simply not correspond with you up until the first day of classes? And how often (if anybody knows) do they accept off the waitlist, and what is the chance of being accepted? For anyone interested I was w/led 4/13 and have pretty much been in deep depression ever since...

wow...people need to relax! I was wait listed as well and really want to go to UMass...no need to attack the messenger (just trying to be helpful). I heard it from a friend who knows somebody on the admissions committee-and don't know any further information. Maybe next time...I'll think twice about saying something...
 
An equally reliable source informed me that dunkin donuts is offering 50 cent small iced coffees today... Yum... Nothing like a couple of highly caffeinated beverages to help you calm down after another day of worrying about not getting into UMASS.

Hey, if you have good info and can back it up by all means share. It's just that too many people on here throw stuff out with no backing and it gets pretty tiring trying to weed through to get to the good stuff.
