No. UMass takes their sweet time in rejecting people, which is why so many of us are so frustrated right now -- no one gets rejected until late April/early May. If I'm not accepted, and not even good enough to be wait-listed, then I really don't see the need for this process to drag on for as long as it has.

Amen! I kind of understand not forming the waitlist until this late, but if they were going to reject me they could have just done it six months ago when I interviewed.

here are the (brand new) stats from 2008:

Total admissions data:
814 applied, 460 interviewed, 194 were accepted, 114 enrolled

In-state admissions data:
725 applied, 437 interviewed, 184 were accepted, 111 enrolled

Out-of-state admissions data:
89 applied, 23 interviewed, 10 were accepted, 3 enrolled

that means, 80 people total turned down an acceptance. assuming a waitlist of 125 people (of course, that's a big assumption), 64% came off the waitlist last year.

Thanks! It's nice to get some actual numbers that more or less support what we have been estimating all along. 7th in primary care. Isn't that down from previous years?

Also, UMass came in 7th in the primary care rankings this year! That's pretty sweet.

Unless you plan to go into primary care, that should not really make you excited...its like saying "Temple is ranked 8th in Emergency Medicine!" (its not...).

When I was interviewed at Vermont I was like, OMG! Top 10 school in primary care (Vermont is ranked 5th), then I realized its a bogus statistic...as is the whole US News & World Report.

PS: I am NOT bitter

Haha, I know... I'm actually not planning to go into primary care at all. I am, however, planning on procrastinating making a database today at work by looking at these rankings 🙂

Also, when I went to UVM they had a huge banner that was like "5th in primary care 2008!" It was kinda cute.

chessodoc, out of curiosity, what is your first choice school? I seem to remember that you are OOS applying MD/PhD...

Ha! Ha! I know! Can you tell Scrubs has been accepted and we haven't?

🙁 I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bother anyone!!

P.S. Virusgirl! Considering you "didn't get" fantasy baseball... you are kicking our butts right now!

Don't you dare be sorry!! We so appreciate all your post-acceptance support.

UMASS for MD/PhD and Pennstate for MD. Ignored/on post interview "hold" respectively.

You don't bother us scrubs! As jealous as I am, I'm happy that you have so many good schools to choose from!

I don't get fantasy baseball -- this is entirely a team effort! My brother advised my initial picks, and one of our biochemists suggested some changes to my lineup. Since I'm an idiot, I pretty much do what I'm told...

A leader who trusts and organizes the input of experts is hardly an idiot!

Re: rankings...I dunno, I actually think the primary care ones are more interesting than the research ones. The research rankings just come down to $$, which do translate to opportunities, but I like the idea of getting feedback on the actual care of patients. Of course USNWR is hardly the optimal source, and shouldn't be used for any actual decision making process, but it's still interesting.

Re: slow decisions...truly ridiculous. Are most state schools limited by the "can't accept more students than we have seats" rule? In any case, with second look this weekend, I plan to do some snooping for y'all, see if there's anything I can find out in terms of what no decision means, how many are on the waitlist, etc.

Re: fantasy baseball - virus, I agree, delegation is the key to success - you don't have to know anything, you just have to know who does! Now gimme first place back, it was so fun while it lasted!!

Ooh, an insider! Thanks Lacheln🙂

Lacheln - if you really want to help out here, you could scare off acceptees and make sure they give up their spots to our waitlisted sdn buddies.

You heard about that creepy guy who just sits around waiting for first years to come out of their apartments... right?

yes yes! and he likes young men, too! He's really big and muscular and overpowers little med school boys like they were toddlers...

...And this is how Rowdy shows up in a giant gorilla costume at second look...

And also how very false rumors get spread.

I'm just going to shave my body and paint it green- Incredible Hulk style! haha!!!

False rumors are great! Spread 'em around like warm butter on soft bread, baby!

As for tonight, I work in Boston and don't think I'll be able to make it to Waltham in time for the get together. If it were later I could probably swing it, OR if it was in Boston I would most certainly be there. I just have to take the commuter rail back home and THEN fight traffic to Waltham. Huge BUMMER!

Noooooo! Now I am sad 🙁 Well, you're more than welcome to show up late if you change your mind (and Waltham is actually on the commuter rail line, so you wouldn't have to make a separate trip).

I know it is, but it's on a different line than mine so I'd have to go back into Boston to then go back home... i LOVE the MBTA!!!

I have nothing else to add to this conversation.

That's what I thought. I wasn't sure if there was an occasional early rejection. They must know some people they are rejecting, right?

And I'm still back to wondering if it's good or bad I haven't gotten wait-listed yet.

wasn't there someone on sdn last cycle who was rejected early on? sdn is a skewed population. people may have been rejected already but wouldn't have posted it here.

From the last 3 cycles (including this one), there was only one person who was rejected early on that posted it on sdn. I am pretty certain only 1.

What do you think I was trying to do last Sat? 😉 It didn't work though, you are too tough to scare.

So, just to mix things up a little- - -I just got a waitlist email... last name starts with K... interviewed 11/19

Dear lord Umass, is no day of the week safe? Is one measly Thursday of peace too much to ask?

PS congrats on the WL 🙂

News on a Thursday... another anomaly in an anomalous series of random events. Perfectly normal.

Also congrats! Waitlisting is a 62% chance at entry! Yes I am quoting a percentage from early that was a best guess! I am hoping my exuberance masks its insecurity!

I swear everytime someone posts with news of a waitlisting and my inbox passes the day devoid of anything from UMass I approach my real-life mailbox with greater trepidation each evening.

Congrats to those with the recent waitlist notifications, you're in a good position!

It's never over til it's over. Seriously, this process is completely f-ed up. As MA taxpayers, we should demand that they tell us everything that's going on in their sick, demented med school admission heads.....cause I'm sure that'll work 😀.

Hi everyone,
I have been kind of a silent stalker of this thread as well. I got the waitlist e-mail as well today and interviewed 10/8

Hi All,
I was waitlisted also this afternoon. Interviewed 12/9. :xf:

Hahaha...So I just got all excited because I thought I noticed a waitlist pattern emerging...because the recent Thursday waitlisters all interviewed between October and early December. I also remembered that a few of the wailistees interviewed way back in September, and that envirodoc and I interviewed on the same mid-December day, and neither of us had heard anything yet. So my thought was "maybe it's in order of interview date!?" But absolutely just kidding...not only would that make waaaaaay too much sense to possibly be UMass...but there are February interviewees who have already been waitlisted. Theory smashed.

Anyway, I hope you all appreciated that little anecdote. Now back to procrastinating studying for my anatomy practical...

envirodoc - maybe we're next anyway??

Happy Friday everyone!

Recent wait-listers and first-time posters, if you're willing, please add yourself/update the ongoing list we've been maintaining. It enables us to hunt neurotically for non-existent patterns!

Hi! I interviewed 10.8 as well, in the morning. If you interviewed in the morning, you may remember that I was the one who got there late, just in time to make it to my first interview!

The reply date is May 15, and since UMass can't overaccept, if one person withdraws, one person is accepted off the waitlist! So I'm guessing mid-May is when you'll see a lot of movement.

Good luck!! Also, out of curiousity, when did you interview in October? (I interviewed 10/21)

i interviewed that day too. bizarrely i was one of two people who had the afternoon interviews.

i'm interested to see how all of these shenanigans on their part plays out. they are definitely doing things differently than they have in the past.

To be even more neurotic, do we have any data from last cycle regarding date put on the waitlist and if people were accepted or not? I am trying to figure out how bad it is that I haven't been waitlisted yet...

I remember someone mentioning in this thread that he was accepted late April without being waitlisted last year. The GPA/MCAT of waitlisted people doesn't look so bad....

I can't log on to the UMass status page! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'Cause this Friday was going to be DIFFERENT from all the other Fridays!

There is absolutely nothing different about this Friday; I was merely being silly. 🙂 Every Friday has been exactly the same, i.e. no news, for the past 7 months, and while I'd love to be able to check my status just in case, I don't imagine this Friday is going to be at all different from the others!

Edit: And it's official! For some reason I can log in now, and they STILL haven't decided what to do with me.

I feel like I'm back in the 6th grade when Brian Haggarty would never ask me to dance at the school dances, but that didn't stop me from waiting in breathless anticipation every time they played Boyz II Men...
