Has anyone noticed that we have a "reputation" thingy in our profiles?

I have one gray box. Apparently I am so boring that I don't even merit a color?

Interesting - see the scales next to your online indicator? If you click on that you get a chance to say whether you like the post or not. I bet then if people like your posts you'll have a good rep, and if not a bad one. I bet grey is neutral.

Interviewed 11/18
Accepted 1/23

will be attending.

😀 Yay! Aaaaaaaand for your kind response...

Haha I like this game.

Also... Steve, you need to tone down that excitement. This is a serious thread here.

Also also, where did our post count go??? I was so excited to dedicate my hundredth post to umass!

Better?

OOS. Shoot my chances.

Mmmm.....the fact that you were invited as an OOS I think says a lot about your application so I don't think you should think your chances are bad. Also, I just got a flurry of emails from some of my old PIs who wrote letters for me saying that they were just contacted by UMass. Has this happened to any of you guys?

I dunno about this "rep" thing...that was exhausting repping everyone from the last few pages. Plus I was looking forward to hitting my 50th post! Sigh.

But even that cannot dull my excitement that March is over and we have finally arrived at April. The last 3 months seemed painfully long and really short at the same time...a rather weird phenomenon. I bet, one way or the other, most of us hear something this month. So good luck to everyone who's still waiting.

On another note, I ran into a former English teacher from my high school at the hospital last night while I was volunteering. After hearing my sob story about UMass, she informed me that she's going to rub her Buddha's belly for me for luck (she keeps a Buddha shrine...don't ask). If I don't get in, then we'll have definitive proof that Buddha has no power over the UMass admissions process and future applicants should pick a different deity to pray too. :ninja:

I used to volunteer at Emerson Hospital (in Concord), and was asked to bring a placenta to the lab... I had never before transported a placenta, and haven't since, and it was kind of weird carrying this plastic container with a placenta sloshing around inside it.

To make the experience even stranger, I happened to glance at the label with the patient's name on it... and it was my math teacher's! (she had an unusual last name, and she was also very pregnant)

I have no particular reason for sharing this story, apart from my general boredom/it was sort of tangentially related to thompa's tale... anyway, carry on. 🙂

Ok, so I am really really dumb. I just spent a good few minutes searching through my UMass page to find the "reputation" box. I was like, so who gives us a reputation, the interviewers?

I finally found the green box on my profile here...

Hmm... not sure I feel about this reputation business. Usually I'm a pretty pleasant person, but every once in awhile I'm overwhelmed by this urge to write a "tough love" sort of post -- usually in the WAMC threads when someone posts "I have a 1.8 GPA and 25 MCAT i really wanna be an md not a do!"

I have a feeling that I may get burned if I continue in this vein...

Hahaha wow virusgirl, judging from the looks of your reputation now, you can pretty much run your mouth (or your typing fingers) as much as and where ever you want. I'm a fan of tough love too - some people need to be told when their ego is getting in the way of their success.

If I were on an admissions committee I think April Fool's day would be pure gold...

Just a random thought while I'm bored at work.

MadMnkey, that's awesome! Seems like a good sign to me .. you'll have to post the second you get accepted so the rest of us can celebrate something coming from UMass!! 🙂

And chessodoc, I agree with MadMnkey, I don't think you should look too much into the IS/OOS thing. I am IS but an OOS-er asked on my interview day how that affects admissions and Anne said that because the MD/PhD program is funded by the Commonwealth of MA vs. the NIH, the school can be a little bit more flexible with the number of students it matriculates, but averages about seven per year. On the other hand, OOS students are funded by the school, so they are limited, usually around three per year. I know that sounds terrible initially, but I have heard of several OOS-ers that have withdrawn post-interview and I bet there are many more because at this point most people want to know at the very least which coast they will be on next year (I know there were a lot of apps from CA, especially). So I think if you can hang in there, you definitely have a good shot. They only interview 40 people and I personally know of six people who have withdrawn post-interview because they got sick of waiting. I like to think that it's all just a test -- eventually everyone will withdraw except for those 7-9 dedicated students (like us! 😉) which they will accept ... ahh, wishful thinking.

But seriously, please let us know if either of you hear anything! Good luck!! :luck:

Haha, yeah right, please girl, there's no way you can compete with some of the jerks on here, way too nice. 🙂 Is it just me though, or does the rep thing feel like a popularity contest?

Hey everyone -

I have been a silent reader of these posts since the fall. I interviewed at UMass in early Sept, and was accepted 1/23.

First I just wanted to keep everyone optimistic by saying that another student I know interviewed that same day as me, and was recently accepted! (last week I think?)

Second, I have some questions, specifically about FinAid. The application is due 4/15, and I keep getting emails about having to complete a Stafford Loan Entrance Interview and pick a loan lender. I emailed the Stafford people and they said to wait until you know which school you are attending before completing this. I am about 99% sure on UMass, so I'm not quite sure if I should fill this in yet.... Also, I have no idea how to go about choosing a lender for my loans.

If anybody could steer me in the right direction that would be a great help!

Thanks a lot and good luck in advance this Friday!

Congrats! If I remember correctly, you can fill out a finaid package for every school you're accepted to, before making your final choice. Btw, I'm not really sure what that deadline even means, considering many Umass students are accepted after that deadline, and obviously have no problems getting stafford loans. Why not just call the finaid office if you have questions? The people there are very helpful.

I'm sorry to say, SDN - but a reputation meter is not a very strong april fools joke.

But I am glad to see our post counts back!

Edit: Damn! That was my hundredth post! Uh, this one's for you, umass.

I knew when I got popular it had to be a joke. 😉

Hey guys, been reading this thread for a while, decided to say hi! You think tomorrow could be a good day? A fresh start for the month?

I dunno, I think that UMass is being this huge tease. I feel like a hungry three-legged puppy and UMass is this sadistic 12 yr old brat taunting me with food from the other side of a barbed wire fence. Even though I haven't been waiting as long as many of you, my stress is still climbing to the stick-my-head-in-the-autoclave level. Hopefully everyone hears something good soon and this ordeal can end 😛.

That gets five laughy heads: :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Ok, I just noticed the youtube and php embedding buttons...

:idea:Time for the unofficial UMass wait-driven-insanity theme song nominations... I nominate:

You say UMass is a tease? Perhaps this is how this turtle feels... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKxmM9n1b8g

Also, don't open that link at work... or your boss might think you have some weird fetishes. Also, so nobody thinks I search for these, you can thank my friend for her animal science class... 😛

P.S. Make sure your sound is on...

Hahaha. That is so wrong! And I'm about to go to sleep too, I blame you for whatever odd dreams I'm no doubt going to have to wrestle with in therapy. :scared:😀

Goodnight all.

Any news from this morning??
This Friday thing is really killing me

Oh wow, that forums server maintenance thing just made tweak out a little. The idea of facing a Friday in April without you guys is pretty terrifying:scared:

As per my usual Friday UMass thread behavior, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!! Hope some (of even better, all) of you get good news today 😀😀😀

considering the economic climate, do you think umass will definitely increase the class size this year? when will/did the legislature approve this? i think i remember them saying august at my interview in january.

I'm not sure who said, it may have been one of my research interviewers, but I do remember hearing that UMass was due to get a large infusion of funds this year either as part of the stimulus package or just cuz MA is so desperate for doctors now, so I'm pretty sure that they're going to keep to that number.

Also, that whole thing with that turtle and the shoe wasn't exactly the type of tease I was going for.....although, right now I kinda do feel like I'm the shoe and UMass is having its nasty nasty way with me....😛

I think this question was asked before but not quite answered fully, I was wondering whether acceptances tend to be posted first on the umass website and then emailed, or viceversa?
Thanks!

They go on the site first, then you get the email later in the day. :luck::luck:

just called the admissions office. a class size of 125 has already been approved and will not be affected by the economy. i also asked if acceptances will be going out today and was told ‘no.’ i got the standard 'middle of may' answer when I asked when the next batch might go out, but she did say they were currently making decisions. well, good luck today nevertheless:luck:

havent been on the forums in a while because my undergrad seems to think i need to write a thesis. fml.

still no news, but reading the posts in this forum always makes me happy that 1) everyone still posting is waiting as eagerly as the next guy and 2) that UMass's rep at a community goes beyond the actual class and even into the interview pool

good luck to everyone in the coming weeks!
