I am also a bit stuck on this app. I added UT recently so I just got the secondary. I really don't know what to say for cultural competance. What do you think of this example?

I went to a high school that served as a deaf magnet school. Interpreters were few and far between, and stretched between an elementary, middle and high school. So i enrolled in sign language and often interpreted for my friend in math class.

Thats the best thing I can come up with...
seems to fit well, talk about your experience and integration into 'deaf culture'

Thank goodness. I was tired of trying to think of an answer for this question. Its the last secondary I have in my possession and I want it gone!

i just added a few schools to my application, including UT. im pretty excited to get this secondary out of the way.

How long are people's cultural competence essays? Mine is only 210 words, I don;t know if I should make it longer by adding another experience.

440 words but it doesnt say anything extremely special or exciting

how long after being complete did people get interview invites

Any interview invites yet & how long after being complete before the invite?

FYI I just rec'd a "complete" e-mail today, mailed in the payment/forms on 9/12.

I received an invite about 2 weeks after completion.

I got the interview invitation about 3 weeks after being complete. It isn't until later in October but this school is pretty high on my list. I have a friend who really enjoyed Toledo. Cost of living is pretty low too.

Does anyone know how their in-state and out-of-state tuition works. Is it possible to apply for in-state tuition after one or two years of medical school?

Thanks

you're eligible for IS tuition after your first year (or immediately if your spouse gains full-time employment).

How soon after being complete did you contact them to check on your status?

Can anyone comment on the style of the interview? In the letter, I see two spots for interviews during the day...does this mean there are two interviews or that you will be given one, either before or after lunch?

Two interviews, usually one before and one after lunch.

they're usually pretty conversational. 2 required ethical questions. Hit the interview feedback for more info:

for those that got an interview invitation from UT (congrats!!!)... how did you guys get the interview invite... through email or snail mail?

anyone else on the alternate list? weird thing is, both my interviewers said I would have no problem getting in and even have a good shot at schlorships. not enjoying this process...

and to above, i received interview invite via email.

That is beyond bizarre, given your numbers. Just goes to show you how random this whole process can be.

I can only speculate and say I had a similar experience. I had 2 very positive interviews and both my interviewers essentially promised to recommend me. I wound up on the Alternate/Wait List. I eventually got in.

I do believe that it's a committee vote. I'm guessing they take your recommendation into account but the ultimate decision is a composite score of all members opinions and that probably put you somewhere on the alternate list.

Now, if I recall correctly, you can be pulled from the alternate list as more people are added each month. They'll compile the vote scores for each interviewee after each meeting and accept the top scores. If people wind up ranked lower than you on the alternate list post-interview that pushes you closer to an acceptance.

Thanks for your input. That's definitely good to know. I have a little more hope on the alternate list now...No one was lying when they said this was such a random process.

Did you spend any time outside for the tour? I think they're campus is all connected with tunnels, but I just wanted to double check. I have both a pant and a skirt, but its freezing here!!! So if we spend any time outside, I might opt for the pant.

Thanks! Let me know if you'll be there tomorrow

No time outside on the tour (unless it's a nice day). The campus is connected by tunnels and we try to keep you inside the whole time.

The one caveat is that you might have an interview in a building across the parking lot or off site (if you said you had transport). The ones across the parking lot are connected by tunnels but I've been here two years and I still haven't figured out how to get to them by the tunnels. I'd suggest a quick dash across the lot rather than risking getting lost.

Good luck. :luck:

Thanks! Skirt it is! Its been 10 year since I've been to my birthplace in the winter time. I try to limit by visits here to June and July. I forgot what actual cold is. (And my sister in California kept calling me yesterday to tell me how she couldnt believe it was 90 in California.)

yes. It's starting to get chilly. Had a nice dusting of snow this past week.

Are you going to be at the coffee hour tonight?

Unfortunately no. I am visiting a lot of family. I only make it back here once a year even though I have 3 siblings and countless aunts, uncles, and cousins. So I'm enjoying hanging out with my 6 month old niece!

Plus, I lost the invitation and forgot to RSVP. 🙁

The hallway that takes you from the Health Ed building into Dowling Hall has a set of stairs on the left side of the hallway (if you're walking from HEB to Dowling). The stairs just go down into the tunnels. So, once you come through the double doors near the student mailboxes, the stairs are on your left hand side pretty quickly after you've left HEB. You should check it out!

Really liked UT! Was very impressed by the students and faculty. Impressed me more than Cinci.... Now I have to wait until January to hear :scared:

Ok, I know which stairs you're talking about.
