2008 Tmdsas

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you applied through TMDSAS then you squeezed by as a resident. Your GPA is on the low side, the AA score is at the mean, and your PA is excellent. You should check out the stats for the class of 06 and judge your chances. If you are counting on the 12-1 deadline your chances will decrease dramatically since, as you should know, that is the date when the first round of acceptances are mailed out. It might be of interest for you to know that last year not a single Baylor enrollee made it from the waiting list. Good luck.

I am not waiting on the 12/1 deadline...I am hoping my graduate work makes up for my undergrad and I get a chance to interview...I already anticipated the possibillity of waiting next year and applying to out of state colleges as well, but I am being hopeful that I get a chance in TX as my wife works here. I already checked the 2006/2007 stats but it is hard to judge as the majority of entering students were of the bachelor degree type...for Baylor, 3 students each from the 2006 and 2007 class had a master's degree...given my degree is in the healthcare field, I hope this gives me some bonus points, but who knows...anyone else out there have a master's degree?

You should have no problem getting interviews to all three schools based on your scores and GPA. Baylor and Houston really look at the DAT science scores more than anything (whick look great), while San Antonio uses a formula (posted on their website) that includes your GPA and AA DAT.

The real problem I see might be your timing. Even though the schools list a fall deadline, you are coming in behind 11-12 weeks of good candidates who applied early and have already interviewed. Round One applicants and possibly the Round Two applicants at this point. This is my second time to apply. The first time I applied I waited until September too and I was told by TMDSAS at that time that my chances of gaining an interview late in the game are slim because there are so many quality applicants that apply early. I didn't get an interview that first time. The schools start with early applicants first, and fill the spots on a first come first serve bases. I don't know if this is completely accurate because I have read post were people have claimed to interview past the 1st round of acceptance letters on Dec 1st and were accepted as late as February (the second round of letters). Here is one such post from last years TMDSAS thread, dated Feb 2nd:

"A friend of mine just got an acceptance to SA this week. She interviewed at the beginning of January. When she interviewed they said that they do a review of the candidates and rank them every Monday. At that point you could receive a letter at any time, or it could be months."

Other posts mention as candidates decline spots, these spots become open and people are offered the open spots. So with your scores, the chances could be good that this year you might be interviewed and accepted.

Just a word of advice, be prepared to answer in your interview why you are now choosing Dentistry after getting a Masters. I was asked to explain in my interview why I wanted to enter d-school after a career outside medicine by all my interviewers. I have a friend in a medical field that interviewed and was drilled hardcore about why the change/interest in Dentistry when they already where in a medical field. I guess they really look to make sure you are doing this for the right reasons, to see if you have researched it well, and are not just taking up a seat to later change your mind again….etc…etc… I don't doubt your motivation, but they might. So be prepared and good luck.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, but I am being realistic with some hints of optimism...I am actually happy that I am done with the entire application process...If I have to do it again next year...no problem, unless I am unable to submit the same essays again...writing essays is very painful...if all else fails, I have a friend whose friend from college is on the U of P admissions, so i could always go there...of course it would cost a fortune!

I have already did enough soul searching to answer any questions regarding leaving physical therapy for dentistry. It was a big part of my essay. 🙂

One of our professors told us the other day that Houston actually puts a lot of emphasis on the RC score. This more so than any other. Just thought y'all might want to know.

I just got an interview to Baylor as an out of state (Utah) resident for Nov 2nd!!! I applied to SA and Baylor and had given up all hope of getting an interview to a Texas school. Does anyone know how many out of staters they interview and how many of those they accept? Also, does anyone think I still have a chance at an interview to San Antonio this late in the cycle? My stats are oGPA-3.77, sGPA-3.84, AA-20, TS-21, PAT-22 (undergrad at BYU).

you can go to http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/ and look at the statistics for all the schools....they did not accept many out of state students...for me, each TX school has a letter as part of my file explaining and indicating when I become a TX resident, but who knows if they just tossed my file on the out of state resident pile...you can also go to each school's website...i think only baylor lists their stats for each incoming class...but again, they do not take many out of state residents🙁

Just to clear up: TMDSAS is not ONLY for TX residents. I'm a Louisiana student and applied through TMDSAS only (except for the supplementals). Interviewing at Baylor 11/2. Will anybody else be there that day?

if you don't mind me asking, what were your stats (GPA, DAT)?

Hey guys,

My stuff finally got processed and sent out last week (I submitted mid September). I'm kickin' myself for being so slow at getting everything done since I probably could have finished everything up in August. Anyway, I'm applying to all three Texas schools (I'm from Houston). I'm just afraid I might be too late to get interviews 🙁 . I love the way TMDSAS calculates gpa though cause my gpa went up almost .1 points. cGPA 3.89 sciGPA 3.9  and my DAT scores are 20/21/23 . Hopefully, it's not too late for me.

Can someone tell me when the app cycle for Tx is generally considered "over"? I mean the deadline for TMDSAS is Oct. 1, but when is the last date for acceptances/rejections?

The day after school starts.

Yeah, I'll have my master's in december and I interviewed at Baylor in August. The lady there actually told me that she was very impressed with how I did in my graduate curriculum so yes, I do think a master's degree has the potential to persuade adcoms.

Quite possibly the 4.0 in the M.S. did not hurt you.

True. Actually, she specifically told me that she was worried with how I might be able to deal with the curriculum (based off of my undergrad GPA/sGPA) until she saw how I dealt with the master's program. My master's literally substantiated by potential for surviving in dental school according to the Baylor adcom.

Denticus: Just curious, where did you do your Masters? What subject

In PT school, we had one person not show up, and had a new student in the class a week later, so it does happen...at least in PT school...why lose money...

I submitted my applications in July, but didn't take my DAT until late August. It's nearly the end of October now and I've only had one interview (at SA).

🙁

What do you think? Is it over for me at the other schools or have they just not gotten to my file?

Don't give up hope. I applied in July and didn't take the DAT till Sept 10 and got an invite from Baylor2 weeks after my DAT(they're the quickest) and just got an email invite from Houston today. Waiting for SA. Do you think I should call and see if they are missing something?

of course it has only been a week since my DAT's (emailed them my scores)...I hate the waiting game!

I've got a 3.3GPA (West Point) and 18/19/22. Is that not going to make the cut for Texas schools as a texas resident? I haven't gotten an interview offer from any of them yet.

The whole process is crazy and has become so competitive. Those are not bad scores at all, but they are not slam dunk scores either considering how many people apply now. Look on predents.com and you can see the scores of people who have interviewed and compare them to yours.

I've heard that a lot of the TMDSAS schools still invite late though so I wouldn't lose hope for a while.

Do Texas schools tend to send out invites in rounds? For example, do we expect on some date that they will send out the next round of invites? I know they are always inviting, but it seems like a lot of people are waiting and I'm just wondering if they will hold on to applications to compare for a little while and then narrow down a group of students to invite at once. Waiting patiently and hopefully...

I really have no idea. But this wait thing is killing me. Anyone hear from Houston or SA lately? I called SA the other day and they said my application was still on review by the board. Its been there for about 4 weeks now so who knows.

I emailed them and asked them the same thing like 3 weeks ago and they said the same thing. That being said...eh...they'll probably just reject me. That goes for Houston too. Either way, even if they did invite me for an interview, the interview date would probably be so late that I wouldn't want to wait on them to see if they want me if I'm already getting accepted elsewhere to schools I'd also enjoy. Ultimately, I will probably not go to Houston or SA. It seems that I'll just go to the schools that showed interest in me in the get-go; somehow it makes me feel that they'll show interest in me at dental school too. I do wish I could've heard back from them before but I guess I'm just not their cup-o-tea. Good luck though! We really never know. They may...err...interview their top tier applicants much later rather than sooner 🙄.

hi, guys/
any rejection letter from texas`schools?
if your answer is "yes" , plz tell us what was your scores?

Anyone interviewing at Baylor on Nov. 14?

Interview with Baylor tomorrow. I'm so nervous. What did you guys where to your interviews? Hope I'm not over-dressing. From what I've read everyone at Baylor should be pretty nice. Hope all goes well.

Hi, guys

I think the rule is that the earliest that schools can accept/reject is December 1st.

Texas schools don't send rejections until their classes are full. As for out-of-state schools, rejections can be sent out as soon as they review your file.

Thanks Rose,
my SA interview is Dec 3th,
any tips will be usefull. it is my first interview and I know HOS is too slow for reviewing, about baylor I don't worry 😉 please don't ask me why.
my score: TS: 20/ AA: 19 /PAT:16 😱

When are classes typically full?

I was told at my houston interview (had it this week) that they will interview all the way through about february and then in may, they will have an alternate list (they will not tell you if you are on the list or the number you are/ plus the list is very very very short). If you don't get an interview by march, they will send a "non-acceptance" letter.
We were told that they really don't know when the class would fill up b/c ppl swap schools, put down deposits waiting to hear from another school etc...so there is no set time...

Yeah just sometime in the spring. It all depends on how many predents are holding seats hoping to hear good news from their #1.

With pretty much all schools, you may not get notified of a rejection letter until after a school year has started. If there is a wait list, they need to have you as a backup in case someone ends up withdrawing t thelast minute. I know of someone who had 4 days to get everything in their life changed because they were informed on Thursaday that they start school on Monday! Some people would love to be placed in predicament.

true...i had a friend who ended up getting accepted off the waitlist and had a week to move out of state, find an apt. etc....its stressful but better than re-applying....

They're sending out email acceptances? Interesting if they are.

Is that new? They didn't last year. I had to wait until 12/5 when the mailman finally decided to deliver my letter.

Hey Bud, I guess myself and a couple others I discussed this with were just special if they aren't doing it to everyone.😉 I guess Dr. P wasn't as excited telling you.😛

Thanks.🙄
