Will be released officially April 1 (I think). But word on the street (take that for what it's worth) is that this is the 2008 Top Ten Medical Schools - Research:

    1. Harvard University (MA)
    2. Johns Hopkins University (MD)
    3. University of Pennsylvania
    4. Washington University in St. Louis (MO)
    5. University of California, San Francisco
    6. University of Washington
    7. Stanford University (CA)
    8. Duke University (NC)
      Yale University (CT)
    9. Baylor College of Medicine (TX)
Columbia U. of Physicians and Surgeons (NY)
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
Forgive the numbering - automatic numbering doesn't allow me to skip a number; therefore, those listed as nine round out the top ten. I have no more information than this (no raw data), but since I wanted to know this kind of information last year at this point as soon as possible, hopefully it will be useful to someone now.

Not even. Copying from my 2007 online edition:

    Edit: my bad.

Double Edit: Interesting. It depends on which link you clink on the USNews website. The "medicine grad school" link on the first rankings page just spews out the old junk, whereas if I go through rankings--->grad schools---> medicine----> research, I apparently get the new stuff.

Hmmm... I'll PM you what I'm getting. I know it's different because previously Columbia had been ranked #11 (with an overall score of 69 or something) and Pitt had been #16, and Case #22 (if I recall correctly). They all have moved up a spot.

Edit: at first it was not working for me again, then after signing in and out a couple of times, I got a change. This is beginning to make me think I'm going crazy.

    Hey Severus,
The numbering you gave us is a little strange - you have two #8's and then three #9's. Usually that would mean two tied for 8, then three tied for 10. Columbia is still in position 11 on your list, so maybe this is just a weird variation of the 2007 one?

Finally, someone else got the same thing.

A lot of the schools don't look like they've moved much. The only thing which makes me think this is real is the fact that their numerical score for each school has changed (slightly). This accounts for similar positions but different rank, I suppose.

This is precisely why I absolutely love Penn. Fantastic curriculum, great city, and incredible school. For those in the know, they know how good it is, but to lay people, it doesn't carry the weight and pretention of a Johns Hopkins or Harvard...

I agree with this, except for the "great city" part. Philly blows. You'll learn this if you go to Penn. Even people from Philly seem to hate Philly.

Hah! Vandy, that's what you get for waitlisting me while UChicago let me in. Suckers. And now I can say I'll be attending a top-15 school...hmm. :D

rme04, that's a really interesting list. I'd be pissed if I were an admissions person at NYU -- not such a great trend, esp if they are #34 this year like someone else said. Of course, these rankings are all kind of stupid...

not "carrrying weight" is a negative, not a positive. prentention obviously has a negative connotation, but that's more dependent on the person than the institution. there's nothing inherently pretentious about going to hopkins - it only becomes pretentious when you make it that way.

lol, though from your mdapps it seems like you'll probably be heading towards philly anyway - congratulations, and don't be "pretentious" about it

Sure, some people want a name that carries "weight" with their patients and/or women at the bar. UPenn indeed carries weight in the medical community and those who know anything about medical schools which is where it actually counts (positive). I'm guessing you go on name mostly, though. I see pretension and ivory-towerness as hindrances to interacting with my patients (a negative), not as a plus but note I plan on working with underserved pops.

i guess the weight i was talking about is pretty much the same as your idea of weight - namely the reputation it has with people who know anything about medical schools. i still don't see how going to hopkins automatically makes you pretentious, especially when patients are involved, because i would imagine that patient's don't really give an s where you went to school, as long as you get them better asap. i'm personally not one to go on name, because frankly i won't be in the position to make those kinds of decisions - i'm just trying (again) to get into any u.s. medical school that will have me. don't take this the wrong way - i've got nothing against penn, and would be honored to even interview at a school of that caliber. all i'm saying is that choosing penn because it doesn't have a seemingly flashy name like harvard is ridiculous.

Hahahaha...well just look at the peer assessment and residency director scores, and you'll see Vandy beats UChicago!!! 4.0/4.1 (Chicago) vs. 4.1/4.2 (Vandy)!! :) And I agree, the rankings ARE stupid, but kind of fun to look at and argue over petty things that really won't matter in the end.

I think they release rankings this time of year because they know we have nothing better to talk about on SDN than the new rankings:p

Had they released these a few months earlier, we'd all be too busy with secondary apps and interviews to care:p
