Going to be in the DC area in January and would love to stop by my favorite school Georgetown. Does anyone think it would be a good idea to ask if I could drop in for an informal interview? Should I call/email?

In my own humble opinion, this would be a bad idea... they do interviews Monday through Friday and I'm pretty sure they're very busy. I don't think they'll be receptive to this. I would possibly send an "in the area" email and include a couple sentences about why you'd love to interview at Georgetown. Beyond this I think would be an imposition.

Wow, in the 4 days since I got my invite, prices to Dulles went way up. It's still cheaper than Reagan but not by much.

For all this money we are spending to interview I would be really mad to just get waitlisted for some sort of dumb reason like being OOS.

hey if you havent bought your ticket yet, fly into BWI. I live in Pittsburgh but went to gtown for undergrad and would always fly into BWI. If you fly southwest, the ticket is exponentially less than flying into National (reagan) or Dulles. BWI is about 45 minutes out of DC and you can either take the train into Union Station in DC (about 7 dollars one way, but only runs M-F) or grab a super shuttle which is what I do. The super shuttle time can vary (but its usually an hour-hour and a half bc of other people) and is $35 but takes you to the front door of gtown. This is what I did for my November interview at Gtown and despite the little extra travel time, it is super easy and more importantly much more frugal!

hope that helps 🙂

I already bought a ticket down to Dulles, but I have yet to buy my return ticket. I am going to fly back through BWI. Where do I find out more about the super shuttle and train, is there a website?

I think I'm probably going to catch the train at Union Station. How do I get there from Gtown, is it in walking distance?

Thanks for the advice.

OOS is a term i used, im not sure exactly how he put it. I can only really assume he said that cuz im from cali and the UC's are very competitive. He did ask for my stats and saw all my extra curriculars so thats why he said I was a good applicant.

All im tryin to say is to not get discouraged if youre on the waitlist. goodluck people! 🙂

I get what you're saying. My interviewer eluded to the same thing, basically the fact that Georgetown is scared of accepting kids from states with strong in-state public medical schools because they know that these kids are probably going to go to these schools especially the way the economy has been. That being said, there is no such thing as OOS for private schools. It doesn't matter at all. OOS is a term used by public schools (and in rare cases, private schools that receive some public funding but not one like Georgetown in DC) meaning that you are out-of-state and thus have to be more competitive than the in-state applicants because the schools has to fulfill the statutory enrollment requirement which varies from school to school (i.e. 65% in-state, 35% out-of-state incoming class).

I hear what you're saying though, and it sucks that they make that assumption. Because if everyone wants to stay in-state, then those schools are going to be much harder to get into. Therefore, it would be nice to get into a school like Georgetown since there is NO guarantee that you will get into your state school.

the super shuttle website is just supershuttle.com and you can enter your pickup site and which airport to take you too (it will pick you up wherever)

for the train you need to get a cab (theres no metro in gtown, closest one is fogy bottom) from gtown to union station (there are a ton of cabs at gtowns main entrance, 3700 O street, about a 10 minute walk from the medical school campus) and then at union station buy a ticket for the BWI station, and you want to take a MARC train, the website is http://mtamaryland.com/services/marc/

i would say the super shuttle is easier since it picks you up and you can just order it online, but again its not as if taking the train is difficult 🙂

Either take a cab to Union station from gtown ($12-15) or walk (10 min) or take a cab ($6) to the metro at rosslyn then take blue/orange line to metro center switch to red line and get off at union station. ($1.35)

The cheapest train is the MARC train which runs hourly and is $5 to BWI

You can also take the metro to BWI. It doesn't quite go all the way there, but you can take it to the greenbelt stop on the green line and from there there is a free shuttle to the airport. I have done this before and thought it was a pretty easy way to go.

In my opinion, a more productive use of your time might be to find out which of those schools that you are waiting on might respond to a pre-interview letter of interest. Wake Forest, for example, has been known to encourage these in some cases. That's just my suggestion.

Would I know that by calling in? or just sending a letter to those 10 other schools?

Thanks for your help you have really good, sound, advice 🙂

Funny I was just asking if I should send them an "In the area email" and today I get the following form letter:

.Dear Hopeless Failure,.

.The Committee on Admissions has completed its consideration of your application for admission to the 2010 First Year Class of the Georgetown University School of Medicine. Unfortunately, the Committee has decided that it is not possible to offer you a place in the Class. Please be assured that your application has been given personal consideration..

.We appreciate your interest in the Georgetown University School of Medicine and wish you well in your future endeavors..

.Sincerely,.
.Brandon C. Schneider.
.Assistant Dean for Admissions.
Good luck to all who got interviews. As you can see, the committee has determined it will be impossible for me to join you.

I was under the impression that Gtown runs a free shuttlebus to Rosslyn.

Is the MARC a lot faster/easier than taking the metro up to greenbelt and then taking a free shuttle? According to google maps the metro takes 2 hrs from BWI to Rosslyn, is that true?

If you decide to call, you could ask if there has been any update to your application status, or something like that, and you could also mention that ___ school is one of your top choices and ask if there is any way you could update your application. If they say yes, you are allowed to update your application pre-interview, they'll probably tell you whether to do it via email or snail mail. You could take a different approach, and rather than ask if they accept updates, just ask "how should I go about updating my application?" Some schools will tell you they don't accept updates, and you should respect that.

Hope things work out for you!

rejected pre-interview.... 3.9/36s... damn. they must not have liked my secondary essay. or something. lol.

i am utterly amazed and shocked at my invite! did NOT expect that! complete 9/2, invite 12/04, gpa 3.5,3.85 31R

Can anyone explain the waitlist procedure. After writing the letter should we expect to be reviewed again or is that still a maybe.... Also is it based on a ranking system?

Thanks

rejected pre-interview, complete 10/02, 🙁

Rejected post-interview. Guess they could see that I wasn't buying their rhetoric.

wait-listed today (placed in a competitive application pool for further consideration). interviewed late october. I guess it's time to start drafting a letter of interest. I think I remember Mrs. Sullivan saying 3 paragraphs, one page...

Any ideas on whom to address it?

address it to dr.lauerman and email it to ms.sullivan as an attachment. good luck, maybe we'll be classmates if we both get in off the waitlist🙂

rejected today post interview... crushed, really considered this a top choice...

good luck to all those still waiting

How does Georgetown notifiy us applicants? Is it the same for acceptance, waitlist and rejection?

Random applicant thought: If I am accepted to one of my top choices I am going to run out and by a hooded sweatshirt and beanie with the school's logo and wear them both for a week. Am I the only one?

Oh I'm absolutely buying some school apparel. I really hope a Georgetown hoodie

If you don't mind, I'll ask the obligatory "when did you interview"

October 22, just got the email today...

Wish I was at least waitlisted to have some hope, I guess they really didn't like something about my interview. I thought it went really well so who knows...

Thanks for responding. Sorry about the rejection... it sucks when you think the interview went well but the results don't reflect that. It almost makes you wonder if there was something ELSE about your application that they didn't notice until after they had interviewed you. But anyways, looks like I still have a couple more weeks of waiting...

apparently a few around Oct 28 have heard too

thank you Mr. Sherlock Holmes. I never realized we should discuss Cura Personalis.

you don't pick the horses after they've won. You should know this.

I have an interview tomorrow but i forgot to write down what time it starts..damn them for not sending a confirmation email. Does anyone know what time the day starts?!

Have any West Coasters received a letter from the last batch of decisions? I've been expecting it the last couple days, but no dice. This was a hot thread a couple days ago...what happened?

decisions are sent via email, not snail mail. you must not have been in the last batch, sorry.

I interviewed here on 10/15 and really liked the school. I got the waitlist email about a week ago and was pretty bummed. But does anyone else share the feeling that GU hands out a large number of waitlist spots and not as many acceptances as other schools? I feel like they do this so they get people's letters and have a better indication of if they will actually go to GU or not...

stayin' alive

Nickv

It does seem that is the case. They're really interested in having people send in letters of flattery and adoration - I think it's kind of silly - I mean, really, the bs can just flow from the pens of so many.

Still, that is the game.

Is it true that georgetown does not offer feedback to pre-interview rejectee? That is what I was told on the phone ... .hmmm

Interviewed 11/4... Waitlist e-mail today... surprisingly i'm not that upset even though i thought the interview went really well. Still debating whether or not I will write the butt-kissing letter

Little more than a month turnaround?

Wow...

I interviewed on Dec. 2. Does that mean I can expect something in the middle of January???😀
