Hey Everyone,

I will be starting at Georgetown this fall and I am super excited. I wanted to wish you all the best luck with application cycle. Georgetown is a great and unique school. I was blown away when I interviewed.

Before my interview I had all the same hesitations that you all seem to be showing:

- Is it really religious: No, I was apprehensive at first but found it to be very open minded and patient oriented. They are accepting of all religions and really only preach to care for one another.

- Georgetown is on of the few top 40 schools that is not number crazy. They seem to reject alot of 3.9+ / 35+ MCAT. I think they would rather see certain personal traits than a number score. This is main reason for having an MCAT average of 32.

- The Cost of Attendance - it is a lot, not way around it. However, Georgetown was very good about giving away grants and scholarships. I know that i some free aide as well as many other people.

- If you get an interview... you control you own destiny, if you want to be accepted you will.

- for the secondary mine was only 2,200 characters. it is deff quality of quantity. Be passionate about why you want to go there. I know is hard to say that now because you really have never seen the school but try to find a real reason. Also, they love aulterism.

Hey GolgMustang07,

I've been following you're posts on the georgetown threads. Sorry about the U. Maryland waitlst, I was rooting for you. I hope Gtown was a little generous with their aid for you. Glad that you are exciting about being a Hoya. If you have any questions about first year, drop a PM.
 
Is the word "holistic" to radical to describe Georgetown in my secondary? I basically said that I hope to take a more "hoslistic" view of medicine as a physician.

I'm not saying I want holistic, but based off what I read about them:
Georgetown medical experience is centered in cura personalis -- care for the whole person, the psychological, spiritual and social as well as physical well being of the person and a dedication to the care of others and the health needs of our society.

It seems like a more holistic appraoch. Holistic not the best way to describe this. I guess i'm having vocab difficulties right now. lol

Im not sure the exact definition of holisitc, but the big thing is treating the whole person, this includes spiritual, socioeconomic factors, psychological etc. I would maybe say more something along those lines then "holistic." hopefully one of the 2 gtown students can chime in here 🙂
 
The literal definition of holistic is EXACTLY what Georgetown describes. A holistic practice of medicine is one that treats a person physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, which is what it says right on their website.

However, because Eastern medicine and people like chiropractors have used "holistic" to describe their style of practice, the word has become stigmatized to refer to medicine practiced by people without an MD. You should either refine your definition of holistic in your essay, or just paraphrase it.

What's holistic have to do with DO, chump? You ever been to one? You even do your homework? Best doctor I've ever been to was a DO that performed a septoplasty and turbinate reduction.
 
Any agnostic/atheists applying to this school? I like the idea of cura personalis, but I am definately concerned about including praying in the medical treatment... I read earlier that this is not a truly religious school; however, they are listed as a Jesuit Catholic School

where did you hear they include prayer as a medical treatment?

I did not hear that anywhere, I was being somewhat facetious... I am curious because when I began researching cura personalis, it seemed to indicate, as many others have discussed, a holisitic approach to treatment. My major concern being, spiritual treatment.

you seem excessively against anything even resembling relegion. I would say its best to stay away from this school. Prayer is not included in their teachings (As far as i know) but i think someone who feels the way you do would just feel uncomfortable there. Probably best to stay away. Theres onlt 4 jesuit schools and 1 heavily religious SDA school, so you dont have to worry too much.

I am not "excessively" against anything resembling religion. However, I am opposed to many of the doctrines that were taught in my particular church growing up. That is, evolution is false, global warming is false, etc. I just am concerned about mixing faith with science. If any students of georgetown can chime in, I would appreciate it.

By the way, I happen to be Christian, I just honestly believe science and religion should be kept separate. I asked for atheist/agnostic response because I am interested to see if this is a discriminating school. We can get into my religious beliefs if you are interested.
 
The extent to which Georgetown demands faith from its physicians is that they believe that there is a spiritual aspect to people which must be healed along with their physical self. If that bothers you, don't apply to the school. They will not shove God down your throat and they will not require you to pray for your patients.

I am an agnostic, although I appreciate the Bible as a book of teachings that, when read appropriately, can provide people with guidance to live fulfilling, altruistic lives. Provided that Georgetown pays more attention to the spirit of its words than the literal interpretations that somehow make it acceptable to hate people because of their sexual orientations and whatnot...I have no problems attending a religious university.
 
Aggro, thank you for the input! I don't mind necessarily catering to spiritual needs... to an extent. Also, my concern is bigotry (i.e., anti muslim, jewish, etc.) at the school. Its not that the school would condone such actions, but many catholics/christians are bigots (but then again, the ones I have met are not in medical school). I have just had bad experiences with ignorant christians. If Georgetown would accept muslim (the whole get up included) then I would feel comfortable applying... Anyone know any muslims at Georgetown?

I can assure you that religion has no presence whatsoever in student life. In terms of our curriculum, religion is only brought up a few times in our ethics class. Never again.

I know of several jewish and muslim students. I have noticed bigotry, but I have to admit that I wouldn't be hanging out with that kind of crown in the first place. Georgetown is the most accepting of any religious school out there, bar none.

Thanks for the info, I think I will go ahead and do the secondary. Hopefully there will not be any bigots if I go there.

There will always be people you don't agree with anywhere... I'm sure there will be some type or another no matter where you head.

HAH, wow I totally messed that one up. I'm really being honest when I haven't SEEN bigotry. It is certainly another thing for it to exist somewhere in closes quarters. Sorry for the confusion.

So, who else dislikes writing a paper about why you want to go to a school? I mean, don't get me wrong, I am actually excited about some of their programs and such, but its almost as long as the personal statement...
 
This school's secondary is killing me. I received this 2+ weeks ago and still procrastinating. why me?
 
Fianlly submitted this thing this morning. yes I wake up early just to do my secondary. lame...I know.🙂

I like writing these essays. It forces me to actually get to know the schools I am applying to. Initially, I picked a variety of schools based on statistics. Consequently, I applied to Georgetown without even knowing it was founded on Ignatius of Loyola's Jesuit beliefs (BTW, anyone read Meditations by Descartes?). So, when I started to research this school, with the help of some of the members on this board, I discovered I really like their approach to medicine.

Now now Camaras, meditations is nothing to scoff at. This text is incredibly accesible and profoundly interesting. Given the philosophical nature of GUSOM, I think everyone should read it...

nice! i woke up at 6:30 then went back to sleep at 8:45 but i still didnt finish anything all the way this weekend! and i thought mcat was bad, these secondaries are killing me! i officially have no summer 🙁
 
how long did you guys make this one? i have less than 3000 and really cant think anymore..

Ive said this before but, length doesnt matter for any essay period, concise = good and bs = rejected. Just say whats true and what you have to and leave it at that. Accepted students have written one paragraph, to 5000 characters. Mine was a little over a page when i wrote mine i think it was close ot the max, but only because there are several reasons i want to go to gtown and its one of my top OOS choices, hopefully i let that be know.

👍 I made mine 2 paragraphs. I think it was ~1000-1200 characters at MOST.
 
do they like it if you talk about God a lot in your essay? even if your not catholic?!

Don't arbitrarily make stuff up and try to say you like it, lol. Adcoms can often read through that. And also, 3,000 is a perfectly reasonable essay length.

Well, if it is written well and earnest, I don't think it would hurt. But certainly don't spend 1500 characters on that part haha

id stay away from it this isnt loma linda. Even if you believe in it strongly. Like they always say what are the 2 things you should never talk about, politics and religion 🙂

yea i totally believe that too! i was almost done now its gonna be a whole lot of editing for me 🙁
i didnt use religion anywhere, just belief in a higher being and yea i know its pretty much loma linda, im not SDA either!!

This is sorta true I guess. But I heard (I forget which one) some secondary(ies) have asked something like "What do you foresee as the biggest change in medicine in the future," which sort of begs to be answered based on the health care reform. Donno, slippery slope 🙂

For me..i used one sentence of my ~4500 char essay to mention that as a Christian, I can better empathize with those of other faiths etc..

it's ok to talk about it, but im a strong proponent of "less is better" here...no matter the strength of belief, it is not the focus of the essay, its really after the icing on the cake, but more like that one piece of decadent chocolate that you put on the tip top..you know..that piece that gets eaten by the person quickest to take it while no one else is looking lol

as for politics...i dont know and dont care..unless a prompt makes me care ahah
