are student hosts available?

*Update*

finally got through to them and set for 9-4.

asked about student hosts...they have a student-run thing, but the med school students are still on break, so once they are back next week, things should get rolling.

- Only wrote about how "cura personalis" caught my attention
- Got interview invite
- Phone system was great; I got my interview scheduled just now after after trying 3 times (although i do prefer online systems 🙂 )

Yeah, the phone system was busy. Must be all those kids trying to schedule.

Did they give any contact info for student hosts?

I am very tempted to fly in from Chicago in the morning to save some expenses on hotels. They're quite expensive. (that reminds me of a gift from my friend when she went to DC: it's a half-cup with the words "I can only afford half a cup as the things are so expen$ive in DC")

That is unless I know for sure I have a student host.

Yup, the guy sounded really nice. Too bad there isn't an email confirmation or anything.

Agreed. The guy was so nice, he was even cracking jokes on the phone. 😛

So I called and he said students are on a break and they should be back in a week and a half. He said to call back then to set something up. Hope this helps.

Interview @ 9/11. The guy also said that there will be an area where we can store our luggages in case anyone will have to check out the hotel early.

So I'm thinking Holiday Inn or student host. What are you guys' plan?

So anyone getting any more invites? Thought I would bump this thread.😀

I was complete on the 31st but no interview invite. Haha, even noticed a spelling mistake on my secondary (do not submit at 1 AM!), but I don't think it was detrimental as the essay was well thought out. Congrats to everyone that has gotten one.

No rejections yet, but 0 interview invites. Kind of discouraging.

Me too. Although logically I know that not receiving an interview invite means next to nothing at this point, its still a bummer. Keep ya head up though - its still early!

yah thats the biggest problem, i mean not getting the 1st set of interviews means nothing, but its kinda sad nonetheless...Its like it validates you that maybe your app isnt bad and you have a good chance...instead of doing like 5 interviews in dec-march and praying the waitlist moves lol.

I had to reschedule my interview. The guy on the phone is so nice.

I got interview scheduled for Sept 8th, anyone want to split a hotel room?

So do you guys know what the deal is with SMP students? Do they actually take classes with the medical students? I heard somewhere med students actually have to compete against them or something?

As a former SMPer, I can assure you that there is no competition among the SMPers and med students. Neither academic competition, or a sense of social competition. SMP students' grade curve depends on the performance of the medical students, never the other way around. Most of the SMP students hang out with only SMP students, but obviously this is a case of self-segregation.

The SMP students take about 6 classes with the medical students. Last year they took Cardiovascular Physio/Gross, Renal Physio, Pulmonary/Gross Physio/Gross, Biochemistry and Cellular Physiology, and two others I can't remember. Many of the SMPers don't come to class and instead listen to the audio recordings. There are always enough seats in class. They also do not take any non-science classes (the doctoring class which includes the old curriculum's ethics, evidence based medicine, patient and physician behavior, and intro to health care). SMP students are never in the gross lab with you, so they can keep the student to body count at 4 or 5 per cadaver. The SMP students look at prosected bodies at a different time during the week.

Is SMP even beneficial to an applicant? I know it's expensive but how will it affect an applicant chances to med school?

It says on their website, that 15% of SMP people get accepted to the School.

im sure blackbird can chime in better but SMP should ideally be the most beneficial to those with low GPAs, but decent mcats (29+), and overall decent applications. You are taking literally the same classes you can take in med school. So if you do well in those classes what does it say about you? Obviously if you are averaging say a 3.5 in gtowns SMP, you can probably handle med school and it can help erase doubts about a low GPA. The director of the program came to my school she was saying that basically its for students who are good applicants to med school outside of their GPA. so if GPA is all thats holding you back, I would say SMPs are probably the best way to go over any other type of post bac or w/e

Hit the nail on the head. In my class of 2008, our avg. undergrad GPA was around a 3.3, while our average MCAT was around a 32.8 I think (actually higher than the first year's average).

So anyone hear anything about student hosts yet?

Anyone else Schedule for Sept 8th?

everyone seems to be talking about gtown's holistic approach as their reason for wanting to go...

i talked about their international program because i want to do doctors without borders and their strong pediatric program... should i tack in something about their holistic approach as well since it seems to be a major theme? i mean i do believe in it and all.

I would touch on it. They're obviously big on the whole cura personalis concept.

can we interchange cura personalis with holistic? i'm thinking that might be kinda dangerous...

i would not, they are not really the same. if you dont want to talk about cura personalis its not a requirement.

you might want to look back through the posts for someone's opinion on the matter after talking to someone in admissions...

(the short answer is NO)

Dear Georgetown,

Where is the love?

Love, Casillas.

So I think they're trying to set up the student hosting program.

Hey guys, I have my interview on the 8th and just book my room at Georgetown University Conf Htl . If you call and tell them they have a special "Best Value" rate offer right now for $99/Night. Im flying in the morning of 7th, spending the night, going to my interview, and then leaving the at 6:35 that night.

Does anyone think that I'll be there later than 4pm at the interview? Hopefully it'll be down by 4 yea?
