Thanks! I am on for 10/30.

Does anyone know when it starts? They said they will email me a week prior about the schedule of the day but that it should be done by 2:30ish. I would like to know more than a week in advanced so I can plan transportation. I am contemplating whether to fly in the night before, sleep there, then fly back the next day or to just fly there early in the morning, and fly out later in the day.

JFK is about an hour flight from my home airport. (or should I fly into the local airport near campus?)

So many decisions.

Yeah, I'm still not sure when the day starts. I'm in NYC, but I was going to go up the evening before just to get more of a feel for the school. Definitely fly into JFK, LGA, or EWR (Newark) and then connect to the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) to go out to Stony Brook. Don't know exactly how close the LIRR stop is to the school, but it seems easier than doing a regional airport thing. You can buy those tickets online and get them mailed to you, takes a bit, but you get a tiny discount, and it's only like 20 bucks or something round trip.

Hmm okay. Sounds good.

I guess if I went the JFK --> Air Tran --> Jamaica Station route then I would most definitely have to spend the night.

Thanks for the advice 👍

No problem. Isn't there a Stony Brook station? I forget now to where I got my tickets, but I can check it out. Newark to Amtrak to LIRR or LGA to M60 to LIRR would also do go you good, so don't feel so limited to JFK.

there is a stony brook stop on the lirr. it's the second to last stop on the port jefferson line. you normally need to transfer in hicksville, jamaica, or huntington. the stony brook station is basically right on campus--there are campus buses that run from the lirr and pass by the health sciences center. just ask the bus driver to tell you when you're passing the hsc, as it probably won't be readily apparent to you.

trains don't run too frequently to sb, however. you can also take the lirr into ronkonkoma (more frequent trains) and a cab to the hsc from there--the cab will be about $20, however...

when were u complete??

when were u complete??

I was complete twice.

Once 8/24 and then again on 9/4. I assume the second one was regarding my second MCAT score being successfully received and added to my file as it was released 9/1.

I've decided to go the night before. Land in JFK. Take the Air Tran to Jamaica Station. Jamaica to Stony Brook.

Anyone know the closest hotel?

Could try a student host: the free and informative alternative. 🙂 No idea about hotels.

hi guys, i'm a current first year at stonybrook. student host is definitely the best option for those interviewing. if you can't find a host in time, there's a holiday inn express (~5min taxi ride to school) that will give you discounted price of $75/night if you tell them you're interviewing here. good luck!👍 (i'd better get something from them for saying this...)

by the way you'll have 2 interviews. 1st one will be with an faculty, then you may have another faculty interviewer or a student interviewer, depending on availability.

does anyone here know the best\cheapest way to get from Long Island Airport to campus? also how long does it take?

Invite!

How does one find a student host for the night before? Are you supposed to contact admissions or something?

Congrats! I contacted Ms. Acevedo and she said she would check if any students are willing to host me the night on the 29th and get back to me. If no one will, I'll find a hotel.

I suggest to just send her an email and have her check for you.

Invite! 😀👍👍

I asked Ms. Acevedo if Oct. 27 or 29 is OK but I haven't heard back from her yet. I see you're on the 29th?

what airport are you guys planning on flying into. the macarthur airport is only 15 miles away from campus, but i cant seem to find any buses\trains that go there.

I was originally going to fly into MacArthur but it ended up being a huge pain. I would have to fly down to Philly or something and go from there and switch planes with large layover times.

Screw it.

JFK --> Airtran --> Jamaica Station --> Long Island Railroad to Stony Brook Station.

Interview is scheduled for Nov. 12. I guess I'll see some of you there!

For those that have interviewed do you know when we should be hearing back? I interviewed 9/25 ::fingers crossed::

damn hotels are expensive. $140 at the stony brook rate 🙁

No one has gotten back to me about a student host yet. I will probably have to book a hotel soon?

Did you get any information about what time the day begins? Because if we don't need to get there till noon or after, then I can just drive in. But if the day begins early in the morning I'm probably going to have to book a hotel too.

Have you found any hotels that you might consider?

Thanks. I'm hoping to schedule mine tomorrow and I just wanted to get a feel for how booked they were. You think I can manage to schedule Nov. 12th too? That day is so perfect for me. I hope it's still open.

How easy was it for you to get the date that you wanted?

I tried to get an earlier date but they were all booked.

You have a good shot because 10/9 was only yesterday in business-day terms.

They email you a week prior to your interview with your day's schedule. I didn't want to take any chances so I booked a flight on the day before (10/29).

How do they notify you of an invite as I have yet to find a status page

Are there cabs hanging around the Stony Brook LIRR Station?

it's highly variable...you can also take the SB bus to the health sciences center. it takes about 10 minutes. just ask the driver if s/he stops at the hsc. those buses run pretty regularly...that's what i did when i interviewed.

alternatively, i always use lindy's taxi: 631.732.0044

Yeah I've heard of the bus but I am going the night before so I will need to go to the hotel from the station... not the school. Thanks for the number though... saving it in my Blackberry now.

I was complete at Stony on 8/26 and haven't received an interview yet. What do you guys think, could I still be in the running? Also, does Stony Brook encourage letters of intent because this is one of my top choices and if they're going to reject me anyway I feel like I should let them know that...
