Wait, got what email? An email from Downstate asking you about your interest in the school w/o having a decision from them?

yeah, exactly! They were like hey please reconfirm your interest, and they didn't send me any decisions yet. Weird, right?!

SUNY sent out an email to all accepted applicants (and perhaps waitlist?) confirming that they are still interested in the school. I am sure this is probably for a check on spots so that if someone had gotten into a new school they prefer but hadn't notified SUNY, they could now do so. I do not think its a big deal for people who are yet to hear back.

Right. This was already discussed lots and lots earlier in the thread. I was inquiring about what other type of email the previous poster had received.

OH. Then you should definitely give them a call to see what's up, if you haven't done so already. Might be just a glitch, but it can't hurt. 🙂

Thanks for solving the mini-mystery.

So I had my MD/PhD interview today. I was pretty daunted, even having been to similar days at other schools, when I arrived at 10am to see I'd be having 5 interviews (while the MD's only had 1/jealous).

It was great though, 2 turned out to be sales pitches on why I should attend and the last was a 4th year letting me ask him a bunch of Q's and us just chatting. The first was a bit nerve-wrecking because the guy was nearly stone-cold but he warmed up, the second was friendly at the rest were simply fun.

I had doubts about Downstate but I am enamored with the place now.

If anyone has the chance to meet with Dr. Durkin, say a prayer of thanks, she is THE nicest interviewer I have ever met.

Aside: did you tour today Vulcan? My tour guide was an asian, and a white dude.

Congrats on finishing your interviews! I don't start tours til the end of the month. You guys will know if I'm your tour guide cos I'll most likely be wearing a Red Sox cap 😀

I was just going through the interview feedbacks and found out that there is only one interview (for MD only) as opposed to two interviews at most schools.......is it true??

Congrats!!!! Awesome job!!

I interviewed on Nov 24th, so I suppose I will be hearing back real soon.

I didn't get the email, so either I was rejected, or they hadn't reviewed my application yet when the email went out. It's all good though.

Congrats!!

I interviewed on Nov 24th, and just called them and they said they would be sending out my decision this week.

yikes. i do not think i was accepted..... being that you just got your acceptance and were interviewed at the same time. Unless they reviewed your packet way before...

I thought my interview went spectacularly there.... w.e. its all good.

Congrats!!! Maybe I'll be seeing you next year, 🙂
I'm most likely gonna go here! how about u?

Congrats! How big is the acceptance packet? Is it a large/small envelope?
It's a large manila envelope!

Congrats!!

When you get that acceptance letter be sure to share it with us!

lol... thx... I suppose I was worried that the acceptances from that period went out in a batch, and then the other sorts of decisions went out in a batch... but who knows maybe your application was reviewed before mine.

Just got the acceptance letter, or rather my parents did because I listed my home address instead of mine at school.

YAAAAAAY congrats!!😀

So I was put on pre-interview "hold" during the fall. They said that my credentials would be reviewed during the Spring. They said to send fall transcripts if I am currently enrolled (which I'm not.) This was not worded like all other pre-interview holds discussed here, where Downstate specifically requested addition information. Has anyone else received this status? Any do they even have interview slots open then?

Is LaGuardia the closest airport to this school? Also, how much would a cab ride from the airport to the school be?

LaGuardia and Kennedy are about equal in terms of time (traffic). I don't recall how much the cab rides cost.

It's probably going to be about $10 cheaper to cab it in from JFK. If you want to see for yourself, take a look at the fare estimator at http://www.yellowcabnyctaxi.com/, linked at the top of the site. If you don't mind your trip taking about an hour and 20 minutes, you can take the Air Train from JFK to Jamaica for $5 (you pay at the end for the ride for the Air Train), and then take the A train (subway) from Jamaica to Nostrand Ave. for $2.25 (in order to use the subways you have to buy a metro card from one of the automated machines, putting on a minimum of $4.50, you can also do one day unlimited for $8.25) then take the B44 from Fulton St. to Lenox Rd. for another $2.25. To check out directions that are more in depth go to http://www.hopstop.com/. You can get directions to and from anywhere in the city via public transportation. There's a way to get from La Guardia to Downstate using public transit, but it takes so long it's probably not worth it. But you can just plug it in to hopstop.

I have the same status... I am also not enrolled this semester. I sent a letter indicating that and it was accepted. I don't know if they have interview spots remaining; but, I'd assume so if we both have these letters. Good luck!

Hey guys,

Did anyone that has been accepted schedule a date to shadow a student?

not yet. kinda waiting to see when others are going. id like to meet some kids who are thinking of downstate to get a feel for potential classmates

Just to let you guys know, I dropped out of an interview on Feb 9th, maybe someone can move there's up

Thats a great idea!!! but does Downstate have a second look?

i thought both upstate and downstate had second looks...but apparently im mistaken. ill have to check my acceptance packets when i get back to school. but i think it would be cool to coordinate a weekend when we can go down, check out the city without the stress of an interview and meet some of each other. cause as superficial as it sounds, i dont really wanna show up next august and find out i dislike the great majority of my classmates.

In the acceptance packet, I think they said they'd contact us in the new year about shadow-a-student...not necessarily a second look per se, but hey we could all "shadow-a-student" on the same day, no?

I completely agree. I live in the city, so anytime is pretty convenient for me but if everyone decides to go to the shadow-a-student program, then let me know and lets coordinate 🙂

nice. well coordinate something then. once people get back to school and get their schedules in order, we could toss out possible dates

Hey guys I have started a new thread where people could post the dates they would like to shadow a student. I thought a separate thread would be more thoughtful since there are a mixture of accepted and non accepted on this thread. The title of the thread is " SUNY Downstate shadow a student program". Please visit and submit your dates!!!

I will try to get vulcan's attention to see if he could coordinate several volunteers to host several students on a given day.

Vulcan is it possible to co-ordinate several of your fellow medical students to host several students on a given date for the shadow a student program. THe goal is to try to use this program as a type of second look with by shadowing alongside fellow prospective classmates.

Let me know what you think/ I started a new thread where students can post dates they would like to shadow. But maybe if you could send us some dates, several students can choose a date thats more convenient for them.

Hey guys!

Here's the scoop on the shadowing program.

The orientation for tour guides/shadow people is on 1/20. Shortly after that, you should be notified that the program is open.

If I remember correctly, they only allow a few people at a time on each day. There aren't too many of us so we can't handle 5 people each...I think it's something like 2-3 acceptees per shadow person.

I saw that you were all planning to come in the same day...I am not sure that will work due to those reasons. I could be wrong though.

That being said, I do not mind having someone follow me normally through my day. If you live nearby and would like to see a day in the life of a smart, good looking, modest med student, feel free to PM me and perhaps we could work something out. I would have to ask about having ppl follow me into labs or small groups, but I may be able to work something out.

Again, no promises...but I'll try.

If that doesn't work out, then I'll hopefully be the person some of you get matched up to in the program! When you know your day, let me know (if you want to follow me specifically 😛) so I can try to get you.

Just got the letter in the mail saying I'm on the 'hold for spring consideration' list

Vulcan, think there's any chance of being able to do the shadow a student for a day? I realize there's probably very limited spots for only people actually accepted, but does the program go on until spring or nah? I was really looking forward to it, now looks like I'll just be pitying myself until I get an actual acceptance.+pity+

I'm playing the same violin. +pity+

Ok I had applied a little late (early October), they put me on hold pending fall grades. I sent those two weeks ago. In that time period, I also submitted a few articles for publication and abstracts for meetings, where I'm the 2nd author.

What are my chances at this stage? How soon should I expect to hear back?

I don't know, but I'm in the same situation as you and I haven't either heard anything.

The program goes until halfway through June...I remember when I did it, I followed on the 2nd to last day, so you still have a chance if they say yes in spring.

Personally I would probably drop an extra $6 and take the LIRR instead of the A because it's a slow, local train. I wrote a pretty involved post a month or two back you can take a look at. Or just PM me if you want.

I'm glad everyone's super excited to come visit the school. But on the whole, shadows and hosts are paired up 1 to 1.As a current shadow-a-student host, I'd be happy to do whatever I can to organize a "group meet," so to speak (i.e. take on a shadow and then if you want, you can hang out with vulcan - don't worry my feelings won't be hurt).

Alternately, you don't have to go through official channels to come by and visit. You guys could just organize something and drop by. Ok, there's security but it's still a semi-public building, not the pentagon. So yeah, let me know if I can help with that.
