so guys its me again complaining about calculus i knew the grade i was going to get from the begining. I'm going to end up with a C. So I got C's in statistics, pre-calc, sociology and now calc. So now I know this will come up on the interview and I can't admit I suck at math. So I'm guessing a high GPA and MCAT will help me with this situation. Since I am at a community college I'm, a biology major and when I transfer I will be a neuroscience major. I guess all the science classes will help me because in every science class I still haven't got lower then a B.

What do you guys think about these classes.

I just hate anything passed algebra arghhhhhhhhhhhh

I hope they dont get mad that I didn't take electives and math not seriously

tell me about it dude; all my c's are in math courses (calc 1&2, trig, and college algebra). If this issue come up in an interview, I will honestly admit that I am not a math person. However, with a solid MCAT and A's in other science classes, I think those C's won't be an issue.

-Your gpa is good. What is the breakdown?

-ECs are decent-Nothing super impressive. (That's ok I didn't campaign for saving Darfur or anything either). I think playing in the band is kind of cool. Lol.. maybe you can help me, I'm looking to get a drum set.

I would try to boost up that sgpa a little. Your MCAT does make the averages of some schools but you might want to retake it again just to be a more competitive applicant. Your clinical experience is good.
About picking the schools, there were many threads with a list of averages of all schools. You just gotta search for it.

I agree with the above post. Try boosting sGPA. I wouldnt go with thermal and statistical physics or quantum theory.. lol.. Maybe some easier science classes that will still be applicable to your goals.

Well, There aren't that many of them (5.5 in this area). I would apply to all of them, if you really want to stick around.

You won't be terribly late. Check out similar threads, some people have nicely discussed the rolling admissions processes at schools. You can submit your primary application now without your MCAT score. AACOMAS takes FOREVER to verify!

Definitely search for the thread on list of GPA/MCAT averages of schools, that would help you pick schools.

According to what are being said on this thread, I would say that you need a 28+ in the mcat; however, I think a 30+ would definitely do it assuming you don't screw yourself up in the interview--like saying " I AM GOD"

I did an informal post-bacc this year and my GPA was 4.0. However, when I combined my total GPA it came out to be science= 3.0, non-science=3.4. My overall GPA=3.24.

I am currently studying for the MCAT and scoring anywhere from 20-24... Should I even take the MCAT on August 25th and apply this cycle, since I wouldn't get my scores in until september???

I've volunteered at hospitals during college for 3 years. That's pretty much it... Any advice/pm would be great! Thanks in advance.

One thing I just keep thinking is that I'm almost 26. If I don't apply this year, I'll be 28 when I enter medical school.

I think your GPA wont be a huge deal, but it may for some schools. My GPA isn't stellar and it was good enough for me to get a bunch of invites. You will have to get that MCAT score up to around a 27-28 to be really solid since your GPA is a little on the lower side. But it is up to you.

If you are not feeling confident about the MCAT, personally, I wouldnt take it. I think doing well on the MCAT depends more on confidence then anything, if you are confident you will do well even if you arent the greatest on subject A or B or whatever. I took a Princeton Review class, and even though it cost $$$$$, it did wonders for me and I was very satisfied.

Of course, to increase your chance of getting in... applying early would definitely help. I would not take the MCAT until you bring up your score. Typically, your average mcat practice score will be about +/- two points from the actual. Seen this happen to many people in real life and on the mcat forum. My own score was very close to my average.

I'll be honest, your gpa could also be a little higher. With all this in mind... Having a 3.0 Science gpa with your current mcat average while not being verified through AACOMAS is not the ideal situation.

Take my advice with a grain of salt, but I would personally wait till the next cycle. Primary, secondary, interviews, and etc. are too expensive to take a risk of not getting in. Especially when you're going to be applying broadly. I'm already a few thousand dollars in and I have about 7 interview invites so far. Not even sure how I'll fund traveling/hotels yet.

Yes you'll be 28 when you matriculate, but what's the difference between being 27 and 28?

On the other hand, if you have a lot of money to spend, taking a chance this cycle is always an option. Hope that help?

I would strongly consider prepping hard for the MCAT and getting into the 28 range. Although, DO schools tend to look favorably on MCAT retakes, so if you have money to blow, it is worth a shot.

You'll be a bit late there is no doubt about it. But if you score well on the MCAT you should still be plenty competitive at those schools. I would think that you would be able to pull at least one acceptance out of this cycle. Though applying early is nice it wont be the end of the world if you dont. The more important factor is a good score on your upcoming MCAT. Good luck w/ the beast and this upcoming cycle.

Well, even though it is far too late, I'm going to have advocate that in the future, for all applicants, they should make preparations for a retake. Aug 25th for a first time, same cycle MCAT is cutting it thin, especially with those projected scores. Seeing as how the OP has 1 week left, I would suggest trying next cycle.

If that's not possible, sign up for a possible retake (I don't know the new dates) but I do not think it is safe to assume that 1 time will do it. It sure is nice and it does happen, but please have a backup plan. Even if this pushes the OP months back for this cycle, it's still something to seriously consider if 2014 has to be it.

No real source, just my experience on the website is that if you perform poorly on your first attempt, and do well on your second attempt then many schools will focus on the improvement and effort rather than your first attempt. Your mileage may vary though.

I'm planning on retaking my MCAT in September, but I really don't know how much better I'll do since I only have a month from when my semester ended to really review. 🙁 so I'm scared. What if I do worse? And I'm taking it on the 12th, which is the last day to take the MCAT for the 2010 application year. I know it's the MCAT that is bringing me down and it worries me...

What do you think went wrong with your MCAT? Timing, or just did not know your stuff? the rest of your application looks solid. You can try to apply with your 22, but your chances will be reduced. I would not retake until you know you will do better. Take practice tests to be sure.

I doubt that it hurts your application any, I had this same question last year, but decided to just get a DO letter anyhow since I could only see it helping my application. If you just sent out your primary app. then you have around 6 weeks until its verified and start receiving secondaries...which is plenty of time to get a letter from a DO. Cant hurt.

It won't hurt you chances but some schools do require you to shadow a D.O or a letter from D.O. So make sure the schools you apply to, do not require that and also it can be helpful come interview time.

What do you think went wrong with your MCAT? Timing, or just did not know your stuff? the rest of your application looks solid. You can try to apply with your 22, but your chances will be reduced. I would not retake until you know you will do better. Take practice tests to be sure.

I think it might have been nerves or something, since my practices were between 27-29. ... so now I havev nothing but pure mcat studying for the next month!

Research, Publication.
Worked two years as a Nurse at the local hospital
One year as a volunteer.
Professional Athlete all of the good stuff.
Shadowed an MD physician for a long time got a good LOR.

My MCAT score is mildly devistating to me but I understand it's average. My practice MCAT's were in the 37's.

Anyhow, I'm thinking I still have a good shot at some schools? I just wanted some input.

From what I have been told by many accepted pre-meds, having publications is a major plus! One I knew told me she had "a low MCAT" but had some publications and got accepted to WSU school of Medicine. I wish she would've told me what she got- but everyone I talk to keeps their score a secret.

I've been considering osteopathic schools since my MCAT turned out to be a 25 O (9Bio, 9Phy, 7VR). My GPA is at 3.86 (biochem major); I have a decent amount of extracurriculars and volunteering, and lots and lots of research experience. I am from Arkansas. Of course, I'm applying to my in state allopathic institution where I seem to have a decent chance. As for osteopathic, I am considering Oklahoma Osteopathic Med School and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine since they are nearby. I'd like to add maybe 2 or 3 more osteopathic institutions to that list so I would appreciate sugestions of nearby colleges where my stats are also fairly competative.
