Hi, I would like to know my chances:

Science GPA: 2.95 (Will be 3.2 -3.3 after summer:xf:)

Non-science GPA: 3.41 (Will stay the same)

MCAT:22 (Studying for a better grade, around 30)

Volunteer: 200+ hours in a hospital
Student group in college

Job: Work with developmentally disabled individuals (6+ years/30 hrs a week)

LOR: 2 - Sci. prof
1 - D.O.
1 - From Work (an RN)

2 Deans lists
1 scholarship award

Thanks in advance!

Get the MCAT up and apply broadly, early. Also, a lot of schools I think require a non-science professor letter so you may want to secure one of those now, so it won't be a problem later.

Thanks. I didn't see the non-science prof part, I'll look into it.

Is GPA low? Or will a 30 on the MCAT diminish it?

It is slightly lower than the average, but well within like one standard deviation. A 30 on the MCAT would be great, but a lot of people say they are going to get that and don't. Do the best you can. Practice, practice, practice.

I know NOVA had the non-science letter requirement. Maybe it isn't common. I got a committee letter with a range of letters so I wouldn't have to worry about that this application cycle.

Another "what are my chances" post:

GPA~3.4 (strong upward trend - only a 2.8 at the end of sophomore year, proceeded by a 3.75, 4.00, 4.00, and likely a 4.00 again this semester, all 18 credit hours). No real reason to explain this other than maturity issues and just plain apathy.

MCAT was 32R (11,10,11)

I don't feel like my EC's are up to par. I have about 100 hours shadowing in the ER and 70 shadowing a neurosurgeon (MD). My LORs are coming from a committee, a EM Physician (DO), and my biochem professor. I have just under 100 hours volunteering (almost all over one summer, though) at a children's hospital. I've worked as a lab "prep" for microbiology/bacteriology labs for the past 2 years, where I hold the "lead" position. I have no research at all, I can't stand doing it. I am not a part of any student organizations. Maybe it's just my school, but they all seem like a waste of time.

I'm mostly worried because although I have As in alot of upper level sciences, like neurobiology, biochemistry, endocrinology, pathophysiology, molecular biology, cell bio, etc., my grades in my prereqs aren't so great. Something like:

Gen Chem 1 B
Gen Chem 2 C
O Chem 1 C
O Chem 2 B
Bio 1 B
Bio 2 C
Physics 1 A
Physics 2 A

Don't know if it matters at all but I'm a 21 year old white male, Texas resident.

What are my chances of getting some interviews? Worth the time and money to apply this cycle or should I just try a post-bacc and wait a year? I feel like a pretty lackluster, generic applicant as I don't really have anything that makes me stand out. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello, I'm a 22 year old Texas resident who went to a public university in state. My stats are:

- 25 MCAT (9BS, 9VR, 7PS; have taken it three times)
- 3.6 overall, 3.5 science
- Majored in Biomedical Science

Here are my ECs:

- Alpha Epsilon Delta co-officer for two years
- Honors Program
- Member of university sailing team/crew
- Did a neuroscience research internship at Emory University in 2007 and presented abstract at their symposium
- Did emergency medicine clinical research and was acknowledged on a published article in 2008
- Was accepted to the Joint Admissions Medical Program (JAMP) which is a Texas program whereby you are -almost- guaranteed admission to one Texas medical school, if you meet certain requirements.
- Because of JAMP, I completed a summer internship at Baylor College of Medicine and took mock medical school classes (Gross Anatomy, Physiology) and rotated/shadowed doctors at Texas Children's Hospital. This was in 2008.
- In summer 2009 I completed another summer internship, this time at University of Texas Medical Branch. Took mock medical school classes such as Biochemistry, Embryology and Medical Ethics. Also shadowed a family practice physician and plastic surgeon at their respective clinics.
- I have also independently shadowed a family practice physician and ER doctors while doing the ER research.
- I have been a licensed EMT since 18 years old and have worked two EMT-related positions before and during college.
- Have volunteered at a medical examiner's office and hospice for a considerable amount of time.
- I currently work as a Microbiology tutor at my university.
- Also took a medical mission trip for 2 weeks to Nicaragua in summer 2007 along with the Emory internship
- Also currently shadowing a DO ER doc and planning on getting a LoR from him as well.

However, you may be wondering...if you were in a program such as JAMP, why the hell didn't you get in somewhere in Texas? Well, in August 2008 my little brother was diagnosed with a brain tumor and began undergoing chemo. So my grades fell that semester and unfortunately that was the semester JAMP had me scheduled to take the MCAT. My ability to effectively study for the MCAT was severely hindered because of emotional and family problems.

Although it was a bad decision on my part, they made me take it again. Both were sub 20 scores. So I was dismissed along with nearly 30% of the rest of the program for not obtaining their minimum MCAT score. The program is great but has some attrition issues (disregarding my individual situation). But yes, I do know I should retake the MCAT but I've already taken it 3 times...I dunno. Not sure what to do.

But yeah, here I am. Ready to give it another shot. I know my GPA is decent but my MCAT is sub par. I have some decent ECs but I do have an odd story to tell. Not sure if I have any shot whatsoever at OOS DO schools but if anyone knows of any I may have a shot at, it'd be greatly appreciated. I am very flexible with any program or its location.

Also, do a significant number of OOS DO schools have a huge number of in-state applicants they have to accept that I should be aware of? Or does each school differ? I'm just used to Texas med schools which have a 10% OOS limit.

Some do, some don't. Oklahoma has a very high in-state acceptance, but the majority of the other OOS DO schools did not have the same limits (I'm also a Texas resident, so I researched these things).

Give it your best shot. Apply to as many schools as possible out of state, and be sure to apply to TCOM. Your EC's are stellar, your GPA is very good, you have the makings for a great PS and your most recent MCAT is not so bad. Be sure to apply as early as possible next cycle (I'm assuming you're asking for next cycle, because this late in the game your chances are significantly less).

Most of the private DO schools accept many OOS students. Some of the public DO schools have a high instate percentage. Michigan State is almost all in state from what i remember.

I know that I have read in MSU related threads that people who have talked to the admissions counselor, say that they recommend 500 volunteer hours, but you can include high school stuff. Other than that it looks good just remember to apply early!

Hey everyone
Do I have a shot at LECOM Erie
International Applicant with a 3.95 GPA, 27 MCAT (7 in verbal), secondary submitted end of December. Lots of ECs, research, international and local volunteering and university athletics? Have yet to hear back

Thanks

I want to see what you fellow applicants/already accepted students think about my chances to get into public medical school in Texas. My heart is set on TCOM (D.O.) right now, but if I get accepted I'm going!

Here's my path:

I graduated with a degree in accounting last August and began working as an auditor, but during undergrad I decided I wanted to go to medical school so I did my medical prerequisites simultaneously with my accounting classes. The whole reason I finished my accounting degree instead of switching was because I knew I would have a year of "off time" after graduating to get my resume in order and I wanted to have a well-paying job that would help me save for medical school. By the time I interview (hopefully) this fall I will have a year of auditing experience.

I volunteered in an emergency room for 6 months during my junior year of college.

Before my new job (and even partly during) I worked in a pediatric ER where my job specifically was to shadow doctors and take their notes. I spent over 1000 hours doing this.

Last August I went on a surgical mission trip to Central America where I helped the nurses in the recovery room and spent about 25 hours circulating in the operating rooms watching three types of surgeons and some anaesthesiologists work.

I have volunteered in three week-long camps for children, two for abused children and one for children with renal problems.

I have been volunteering for a hospice twice a month for 6 months.

I am signed up for genetic research credits over this next summer and will be continuing it throughout the fall.

My undergrad GPA was a 3.7. I graduated from my school's Honors Program. My science GPA was about a 3.65. I was an officer in one honor society and involved in two others.

I am taking my MCAT in April and should make at least a 28, but hopefully above a 30. (I really have no clue I began a two month cramming session Sunday and I am feeling more confident.)

BUT...I do have several weaknesses on my resume. My bio grades were not stellar. A couple A's, a couple B's, one C in Animal Phys, and one D in Genetics. I think the D in Genetics might help me, though, because I made it up and got an A (and am also going to do research for this professor, and he's writing me a letter). I think I can tie my low-grades into working full-time during my final two years of college.

And my GPA has a slightly downward-sloping trend in my 4th year but I did get it back up my final two semesters.

I would appreciate input!

Sometimes I think I'm ahead of the game, sometimes I think I'm not doing enough but I don't know how I could do more, and sometimes I think I'm in the middle. So obviously I don't know where I am 😎

Alright, so here's the past 4 years of my life, laid bare what do you guys think of my odds?:

-Graduating undergraduate in California
-2.9 science gpa (probably 3.0 flat by spring)
- ~3.2-3.3 cumulative gpa

-30Q MCAT
-9PR
-10VR
-11BS

-have shadowed an MD
-working on shadowing a DO

ECs

-1 year volunteering with the homeless and medically underserved
-3 years volunteering with NGO that provides medical care and basic needs to rural communities abroad
-3 years research experience, in biomedical research lab
-1 publication in a major scientific journal, another publication in the works
-1 year employed as a clerk at child psychiatry study

That's about the jist of it...I'd love to hear your thoughts!🙂

It wouldn't surprise me if you landed various interviews. With your numerous experiences, good GPA, and 25 MCAT (plenty of 25s get in), you should land a few interviews. At that point you can explain your story. Maybe even tie your story about your brother into the personal statement for AACOMAS. Go for it buddy 👍

Working on Studying for MCAT for retake in a couple months; Looking to Apply in May/June '10. Present plan is to apply far and wide to DO schools. Only caveat is that I am only 21yrs old presently.

So, factoring all of this in, what are my chances for getting in?

I know that my Undergrad GPA is slightly low (major family issues 2nd year of school) and my MCAT needs to be bumped by at least 4-5 points.

IMO your science GPA needs to bumped up a little bit. That will also raise your overall gpa. And most importantly try to improve your mcat score, 22S is very edge point. And I am sure you will do better with good preparation. So if you bring up your mcat up to 26 or above and bring up your gpa you should be fine if you apply early. You're young, you have a potential to get in med school, but make sure you study hard and prepare well for the application cycle. Do not assume that DO schools take lower mcat score, that trend is clearly changing. There are people who get in DO school with lower mcat score, but they all have something else that is unique and make them strong candidate. So try to score good on mcat. You have great EC's and LOR's which will help you tremendously. Make sure you apply early! That makes a big difference. Good luck! 👍

Im looking at applying to TCOM but still need to finish Ochem and physics. my overall GPA is 3.63 and science 4.0 . I know you can apply with only 90 credit hours but what are the chances of acceptance. Have not taken the MCAT yet. Also work full time and have a family. Not much volunteer time. TCOM would be perfect for me cause that is where most of my family is and they could help with the kids. Currently i live out of the state. what do you think my chances are? whats the best way to study for the MCAT?

Hey all,

Like many before, I have been quiet on these boards for awhile. And I was curious of some input into a few schools. I started looking into DO schools back in 2006 and am finally ready to apply.

I got my Bachelors in Nursing in 2007, have a 3.3cGPA with a 3.55 in the sciences. I currently have a 4.0 with 26 credits taken in my post-bacc work. I have worked in infectious disease for the past year, and have 8 years as a firefighter/EMT. I'm due to take the MCATs at the end of May.(hoping for a good score, 28+) and was wondering who else had similar stats that got accepted to these schools?? Also, I've read of the importance of applying early and broadly, so I wanted to submit in mid-June after the first scores came back. Additionally, will 3 years of work as an RN help my chances? I intend on applying only to DO schools.

UMDNJ-SOM
NYCOM
Touro-NY
PCOM
PCOM-GA
NSU-COM
LECOM-B

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I was in your situation as well. In my case, being an RN didn't hinder me. No one ever questioned my qualifications during my med school interviews. As long as you have a decent MCAT score and did well in your pre-med classes--and judging from your post-bac gpa, you're doing great👍--your extensive clinical experiences will help. Oh and submit your applications as early as possible. Best of :luck: to you.

I agree - score well on the MCAT and you will be fine. Don't shoot for 28, shoot for 30.

The Patient care experience is more important than the nursing or EMT licenses IMO. Either way it will not hinder you in anyway... Good luck!

Advice needed! So I was accepted to Medical University of the Americas - Nevis (MUA) premed program. I was so excited until I found out I have no way to pay for it. They use a private lender and they require a credit score of 700. I don't have any credit or a credit card, and a cosigner is out of the question. My dad is pushing me to try for US DO schools but my gpa sucks. I'm currently in my fourth year (with another one left) and my overall gpa (2 colleges) is only a 2.8ish. My sci gpa is a 3.06. I have not taken the MCAT. My transcripts look horrible (many w's and retakes). Currently the only premed classes I have are as follows:

Biology 1 - B
Chemistry 1 - B
Chemistry 1 Lab - A
Statistics - F (plan on retaking, I have no idea why this class was so hard for me.)
Anatomy - B

I know I've screwed up many times, but finally a small upward trend is developing... How screwed am I when it comes to any DO school? I'm completely stressed and beginning to think my future is going down the drain.

Luckily DO programs will allow you to do retakes and take the better grade for you GPA averages (MD is essentially completely out of the picture). Sounds like you need to buckle down, retake several classes to get your cGPA above 3.0, and your sciGPA above a 3.2. The upward trend is very important. A strong performance on the MCAT will help you significantly. You will need to develop a well thought out and realistic plan to improve your academics, but you can do it! I wish you the best of luck!

I got accepted to DO schools with a cGPA of a 2.8 and a sGPA of a 2.9. Work on your EC's, do well on the MCAT and have a significant upward trend in your future classes. That is probably the best bet. GL

Be diligent studying for the MCAT, as others have mentioned. Get as many review books and practice tests as you can find, and really beat that sucker (I say this because I did not 😛 ). If money is an issue, some used bookstores will carry exam crackers and other review collections.

If you can show a strong trend you have a shot. When the time comes, focus on your personal statement (it can make a big difference) and apply to as many schools as you can. Be mindful that most DO schools like to see a letter of rec from a DO that you have shadowed.

In need of a little advice...

I have to take 2 classes over Ochem-2c, Gchem-2b. My school was on the quarter system and now I'm looking at taking these classes at a cal state which goes by semesters, if I took the last semester of ochem and gchem offered at the cal state would that count as a retake? It's annoying with the quarter-to-semester conversion.

Appreciate and thoughts/advice! Thanks

I think the conversion is a little odd. but it would probably be good for Ochem. The Gchem class would essentially replace your Gchem 2c? Im unfamiliar with this way of numbering classes so im assuming you are wanting to retake the 2nd class in a full year series.

I personally would do the Ochem, and not worry about the Gchem so long as you did significantly better in the third Gchem class. Work on your EC's and get as much experience as you can as well as good LOR and do well on your MCATs(from your MDApps you have no score).

Thanks for your response!

I was thinking the same. I will go for the Ochem most likely since it will directly replace the class.

I was just thinking, what if I took a class like Analytical chem instead of retaking Gchem? I know some schools don't accept C- so I'm unsure what to do if it's just left there on my application, would they just reject me since it's a prereq?

I thought maybe showing I could handle a tougher Gchem class would look better? and yes I will be taking my MCAT in April!

I think you have a good chance. I got alternated at LECOM-B and my Gpa is a 2.7 and science was a 2.98. and a similar MCAT. just keep your EC's going. And realize that LECOM-B is pretty selective, and I have heard of people with amazing stats not even getting an interview. Apply broadly to increase your chances, im pretty confident youd get in somewhere

Thanks for the advice. Did you get in anywhere, btw? I hope you did! Definitely will apply broadly to about 10 schools. Hopefully it will go well.

I did, I got accepted to PNWU which i will be attending, and Waitlisted at Touro-NV and LECOM-B. I Interviewd at ATSU-Soma, I declined an interview at ATSU-Kcom because of the situation. But i also didnt finish secondary apps till december so, if you apply early, im sure your chances will be good if you apply early. GL

I hadnt noticed that we have a DO "what are my chances?" so I posted this in the MD thread, but I really want more DO focused answers.

(please ignore if you have already read/responded)

Applying this upcoming 2010-2011 cycle. Plan to apply early.

Hispanic, Fully Bilingual, English Major, Latin American Studies Minor, Born in Venezuela, top 30 undergrad inst.

3.2 cgpa
2.9 sgpa
MCAT: scheduled to take it in April, my practices so far 27, but Im mid way through my study plan (sdn 4month plan)

(*not my complete list of EC's)

-Assistant Editor for Pediatric Research Newsletter
-2 years Research with patient interaction.
-Tibet-Abroad volunteer mission trip.
-100 hrs Shadowing team of cardiologists (excellent LOR from one)
-200 hrs volunteering with migrant workers children, english/reading.
-4 years working in ambulatory clinic.

I can re-take some sciences this summer to up the sgpa, but is it worth applying later?

Thanks again in advance!

^ Lolwut your EC's sound more like a full-time job. I'm sure you'll get in everywhere.

Anyway, I have a slightly different problem. Where should I apply? I graduated from UC San Diego and am a resident of San Diego. Here are my stats/ECs:

3.63 cGPA Biochemistry, 3.5 sGPA, 36T MCAT

-500 hours of shadowing w/ two MD's and a DO in several hospitals and ambulatory care (I have a letter from each of them)

-100-200 hours of ER volunteering between December '09 and June '10 depending on how lazy I feel (no possible letter from this unless I really want an RN's letter of rec)

-Third author on JCI paper, to be published March '10 hardcopy (one year of 50 hrs/week work, a nice letter from MD/PhD mentor plus PI's letter)

-4-year commitment to medical missions to Mexico every few months, usually by car/bus. About to expand this to by private airplane farther into Mexico than just Tijuana, lol. I don't plan anything (but I can get a good letter from the director who is also on the adcom).

-EMT-B certification and intern/externship (no possible letter that means anything)

-TA'd for 4 classes, MCAT tutor for ExamKrackers, Academic Advantage high school tutor (letter from the PhD I TA'd for for several classes)

-Guild leading for 40 hours / week for two years in World of Warcraft (yes I'm including it, I kinda don't have any other clubs/leadership)

I am basically tired of doing the USMD dance, and the DO I shadowed turned me on to DO + Military medicine. So, which schools should I apply to? I am a CA resident but would consider practicing/studying anywhere in the US.

I am assuming:

-Both CA schools
-All the Touro's
-What else?

Your stats are amazing. Especially for DO. Apply to whatever schools you like, and you will probably be the one choosing in the end 🙂

I have a 3.23 gpa and the science is about 2.72.. I'm on a really good pace this semester for between 3.5-3.8 gpa.. currently studying for the MCAT.. my EC's are pretty competitive compared to what I have been reading on here.. I'm positive even with good MCAT (30+) I wouldn't get in anywhere this cycle.. I may pick up another major so I can have more time to retake classes and I would graduate december of 2011, as opposed to spring of 2011..

My question is: If I continue to raise the sGPA to 3.1-3.3 and get a competitive MCAT score should I wait and apply to schools as early as possible for the 2012 cycle or cut my losses not retake the classes and hope to gain admissions into a masters/post-bacc program?

Thanks in advanced!

Hey guys/gals, what are my chances if I submit my application mid-June?

MCAT: 27M(9VR, 8PS, 10BS)
sGPA: ~3.1
cGPA: ~3.0
Letters:
-Research PI
-2 Science Faculty
-Non-Science Faculty
-MD
-DO
Extracurriculars:
-2 & 1/2 years of evolution research(>1000 hours)
-1 & 1/3 years of interning on various floors at a hospital(~240 hours)
-8 months of interning at an urgent care facility(~130 hours)
-3 months of working at a pharmacy(I am a certified pharm tech)
-3 months of teaching science/english at a local highschool to mostly minorities who had trouble passing the California High School Exit Exam
-Participated in a minority outreach video funded by the NSF.
-Currently shadowing a DO at an osteopathic med school

I'm willing to go anywhere haha

Thanks! 👍

If you want to raise your GPA by taking more classes, look into post-bacc programs and special master's programs (in the post-bacc forum). Usually these have linkages which grant you a guaranteed interview/admission conditional of doing well in the course. These classes make you compete directly with med school students in the class, so they're an "audition" for med school. Much better than taking another year of undergrad classes, imho.

For example, Tulane's ACP program is 1 year and has an 88% acceptance rate to Tulane medical.

I was looking at that and the main thing that is deterring me is you must be wait listed at a U.S. medical school, I'm not sure that will be possible this cycle... do you know of anymore linkage programs that I would be competitive for admissions given my anticipated stats that DON'T require being wait listed?

There's several. Go look in the post-bacc forum.

I was wondering what my chances are. I applied this year and havent heard back, so I am preparing for the next cycle with a new mcat score.

You'd have a much better shot if you bumped up the GPA. Your MCAT is around average for accepted DO students and your EC's are ok. However, your GPA is below average. DO schools are getting more competitive every year (I think the average GPA ~ 3.5). So definitely take more science classes to raise your GPA, continue doing your EC's and you'll have a decent shot.

Numbers look good - congrats on the higher MCAT! Your EC's seem pretty well-rounded too...though you haven't mentioned how long you've been doing each activity. Adcoms like seeing commitment. If you haven't been doing your EC's for very long, that may also be why you haven't heard back this cycle. You might also want to get a non-science LOR. However, that's school-dependent. Other than that, you should have a good chance getting in somewhere.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to bring my GPA up before I submit my application. Do I have no chance? Would it be worth it to take classes, even after I submit my app?

Sinfest,

I had similar numbers, but slightly lower. And i was able to get 5 interviews, and 1 acceptance so far. So you do have a chance. I think you have good EC's and if you have a good trend in your GPA then you should be fine. I would apply, and if you able to bring your GPA up after you submit your application, then do that. But you do have a chance at getting in. Dont be discouraged.

Thanks Mesican, you gave me some hope 🙂

Mind telling me a little more about your application, like when/where you applied, gpa, mcat, etc.

I'm submitting my application to aamcas late July. Will this hurt my chances for getting into a school like UofM? I have a 4.0 gpa, waiting for mcat score but expecting pretty decent score.
