Wow, I was expecting a rejection but got an Interview invite! 3.99 35O

Those numbers seem like they are a bit better than a rejection level...unless you're thinking that they might say "Hey, this smart kid is going to end up somewhere else so let's kick him to the curb before he does the same to us." Congrats on the interview though! I'm sure you'll see plenty more.

That is called the "Tufts Syndrome" (this smart kid is going to end up at Harvard, let's not waste time with him)..so the kid gets "tufted"...😀

Can any current GT students elaborate on what you like/dislike about your school? I'd like to hear comments from anyone who has interviewed, as well.

I'm amazed by the negative perspectives on this board, but I'm not sure what to believe. What's most surprising is that it seems the majority of other school threads have students on them going to great lengths to rave about their school and have nothing but positive things to say about it. This one doesn't, and is painted in more a negative light.

I'm sort of the on the fence about applying here with the posts about subpar facilities, hyper-competitive atmosphere (this one really gets me), poor student evaluations, and lower retention rates (relatively speaking). Combined with the high app fee, lengthy essay, astronomic number of applicants, and just being sick of writing, I'm not sure what to do.

Don't forget the unbelievable number of SMP students. I really wanted to like Georgetown last year, but there were so many things working against it.

Mdeast's posts here are pretty accurate: http://more.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=724491

Of course everyone's going to have a different opinion about any school, but I just wanted to counter the anti-Georgetown posts by saying that I loooooved it! I had a great experience on my interview day, and I've talked with a few friends/acquaintances who are 1st years here, and they had so much good to say about it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that acceptance!

Just out of a sincere sense of curiosity, why did you love it?

To be honest, I can't pinpoint all of the exact reasons, but on my interview day I just had this sense of belonging. I know that sounds cheesy, but I really just clicked.

As to some of the specifics: I really liked the students I met/knew here. They seemed people I would want to be friends with anyway, not just people that I could probably get along with. I also like Georgetown's curriculum, both during the first two years and the rotations. I've done a lot of study in ethics, and Georgetown excels in medical ethics education (from what I've heard.) Plus, they match really well in the areas I'm interested in. I'm really into community service, so that aspect of the school's philosophy appealed to me.

Georgetown's not for everyone, but it seems like a great place for me. (That being said, I've only interviewed at a couple of schools so far, so I don't have tons to compare it to.)

Do you guys really think that not a single person has received an interview invitation from Georgetown in nearly a month? Seems strange.

Wanted to chime in that this SDN thread doesn't seem to do this program much justice. It seemed like a pretty solid medical school on our recent interview day. The students seemed happy, intellectually curious, collaborative, and sane. Nearly all of them seemed to acknowledge the existence of 'gunners', but were quick to note that you'll find them at any medical school. They seemed to view the grading system as a tolerable trade-off for a great medical education and impressive match placements.

for those of you who received rejections (my apologies), did you get rejected pre- or post-interview? just wondering if anyone who has interviewed already has heard anything since

I interviewed there early september. As far as I remember, I heard that we should expect to hear stuff from end of october-->mid november. So, i havent bothered to check since and am focusing on other interviews until then.

For anyone who has been to Georgetown to interview, where have you been staying? It seems like it is ridiculously hard to get a reasonable place to stay. I have family in the area but they live about 40 miles away so I am contemplating what to do about a place to stay.

I stayed at the best Western nearby (should be in their list of nearby hotels they give you). You get 35% off if you tell them your interviewing at georgetown. I payed 75 bucks for a night, 2 queen sized beds, great room.

only thing i would mention is that when you go to your interview in the morning GO EARLY or else you'll be stuck in traffic like I was. You dont want to be the guy showing up late lol its kind of embarassing trust me.

There's also a hotel 100 yards from the school attached to the hospital. It's a little bit more expensive, but the peace of mind you gain from being able to wake up and walk to the school in just a few seconds is great. You get a discount when you make a reservation if you tell them that you are interviewing at the medical school.

They also have a hosting program if I recall correctly.

Hey! I'm interviewing this week at Georgetown. What time did you show up? Were most people there for the "optional" breakfast/ attend a class with a medical student??

Also, how was the interview? Pretty low stress or lots of ethics/healthcare questions lol? 🙂

Thank you!!

For anyone who's driving to the interview, I visited the area extensively when I was visiting my brother (who lives in D.C.) and the traffic/parking in that area is HORRIBLE.

Congrats on the interview!
Everyone was there for the optional breakfast and everyone went to a class with a med student. I was with a group of about 12-15 other interviewees who were all pretty nice.
I think the optional breakfast was at 8:30 and i showed up around 8:50, so technically I wasn't OFFICIALLY late since that part was optional...but because everyone was already there i certainly felt like i f*cked up lol.

the interview blew me away as to how relaxed it was. Very conversational, wanted to get a feel for my background sort of thing. no ethical or health care questions at all.

Good luck!

indeed, leave early.
Ask your hotel reception desk person when you should leave to arrive at time X. I wish i took his warnings more seriously.

Thanks for the advice, just made a reservation at the same hotel for my night.

Um can someone help me out here?

I was complete at Georgetown just a little over a week back and I wasn't expecting to hear anything just yet. Anyway I checked my status and on top of the page it says Interview. I'm not sure if that's my status though. I mean when you click on the 'GU SoM Post-Submission Updates' link in the applicant center is anything written up top in big bold letters the status?

I may sound paranoid but I'm having a hard time believing I got an interview with my stats already. Also I haven't received an email yet so that adds to the confusion. How long after the status change do they send an email?

I'm biting my nails like crazy! What do you guys think?

I remember something similar to that when I was complete. If you do get an interview, they mention in the email to upload your photo on that page. Georgetown sends its interview invitations via email, and I think Thursday seems to be the general day for receiving them. I hope that doesn't put a damper on your hopes! Good luck!

So you mean everyone has that 'Interview page' and if you get invited via email you use it to upload a photo and stuff?

lol ah that doesn't mean you have an interview. they just give you the option of submitting a picture. Check the Message Center to see if they've sent anything. I assume the home page would also say something about an interview invite.

That makes sense! I didn't think I had an interview...it seemed so unlikely to get one this soon after submission. That page is confusing though!

Interview Invite here too!!! Gracias for the love alma mater!!

Complete 8/25/2010, Interview 11/1/2010

GTown is one of my top choices! For those of you with interview invites or who have interviewed, how long after being complete did you receive the invite?

Thanks!🙂

Agreed...mine was an hour of pure conversation. Interviewer took some time up front to read my app (they are blinded to much of it and some don't see anything beforehand) so it took a minute to get started. From there they just evaluate the "soft skills" and do the sociopath check. It was a wonderful interview...very much a two way discussion (fit check) like ms. Sullivan explains it. I prob asked the interviewer tougher questions (how does attachment to a Jesuit institution affect staff views on abortion, stem cell research, etc) than she did me (where are you from?)

Can we contact the admission office by phone? Or is it just by e-mail?

It's been a month since I submitted my secondary and still no indications that it's complete on the status page. Should I email or wait a few more days?

Having interviewed here, I must say that the school is about average. One problem I had is that I asked students why they chose Georgetown, and often times the response was "the Jesuit tradition because I went to a Jesuit college/high school." Really guys?! The facilities were not that impressive...very outdated and nothing special (tiny library, average lecture halls).

The curriculum however was excellent from what I hear. The doctoring modules seem to give students a well rounded education. Also, the teaching in 3rd and 4th year seems superb and gives students a lot of patient responsibility. They really emphasize producing "great doctors" as opposed to researchers..which is a good thing for me.

I found it bizarre that Sullivan told us "If you get into your state school, you'd be a fool not to go. If you get rejected, then consider us." What does this say about the school? Also, my interviewer was a PhD which made it very difficult to relate to him. He was clearly not prepared and was definitely not trained on how to conduct an interview. After shuffling through papers for 5 minutes, I began asking questions like "Would you like to know about my research?" He had no substantial questions prepared...

All in all, definitely a mixed experience. The school seems to attract a certain type of person (does JESUIT ring a bell?). Otherwise, you're probably better off at your state school.

So I'm trying to work through the "why Georgetown" essay, but I'm really having a hard time finding anywhere near 5000 characters worth of pros for Georgetown. What makes them stand out from other schools? Their website didn't say that much from what I found.

Anyone interviewing here tomorrow? I'm getting quite nervous for my 1st =/

Hey don't sweat it, you will do great! And you have multiple other interviews so no matter how this one goes, you will get into med school 🙂

When you get a chance, can you let us know how it went Dragon529?

anyone complete for 6-8 weeks not hear regarding interview or rejection?

yea been a super long time for me as well. i'm hoping that's a good sign!

Yeah- I'm right in that 6-8 week region. I'm an alum too, and I'm dyyyyyyyyin. I'd go to Georgetown in a heartbeat. Do you guys think it could be a good sign or a bad sign? Sorry- I normally hate speculating, but this is driving me nuts.

I waited exactly 10 weeks for my interview invite, so don't worry.

Pretty excited to be interviewing here next week!
