2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard anything in regards to interviews about this particular program (Widener's Post-Master's Program, 4 year Clinical PsyD)? I'm wondering if maybe these candidates get sent invites later than the regular 5-year cohort for Widener's PsyD (as they do at some other PsyD institutions)?

Keep me posted! 🙂

I applied to the regular program, which was stupid because I do have a masters. I wonder if it'd be too late to transfer credits. I did get an interview, but I sent my app is quite early. I think that Widener does notify people at different times.

If anyone who heard from Drexel or Penn State can PM me their POI and method of contact I would appreciate it.

Thank you for that info, Student4Life.

I just called Widener PsyD Admissions and got a voicemail, which stated that if you are calling for admission info "please note that candidates will be notified up until January 17," as they continue to compile and review applications. Just an FYI, in case you haven't heard from them yet.

I applied under the Post-Masters program and received an invite for the 26th. However, their website lists other dates: http://www.widener.edu/academics/co...ogy/graduatestudentinformation/admissions.asp

So, there should still be more invites coming.

One of my friends applied to Rutgers Social Psych PhD program and has received an interview invite. Just thought I would mention it in case any of you guys also applied to that program.

Oh my goodness, when I saw Rutgers, my heart almost stopped!! I am waiting on their PsyD program invites but I know that it will be a while since their deadline just passed.

This is actually fairly common and it happened to me last year.

There are a couple ways of going about it. Ideally, you can work with both schools to see if one has an alternate interview day that you can attend. You can also see if one of the schools will arrange an in-person interview on a different day jus for you (this is what I ended up doing.) Most commonly I'd say you will be forced to prioritize and attend the interview at the higher-priority school and schedule a phone interview with the other.

Does anyone else have experiences with this?

Had this happen with multiple interviews last year - everyone wanted 2/19 last year! I did exactly what you did - asked about alternate interview days or phone interviews. All but one school was willing to work with me.

If the OSU people would PM me their POI that would be great! Thanks!

For OSU- How was the invite received and from whom? Thanks! Totally disappointed I didn't get an invite 🙁

Anyone currently have a Master's Degree or is currently working on theirs but applying to PhD programs?

I'm curious as to your luck with invites and any general trends that you've heard of (such as if school's are less receptive if you have a master's, for example)?

I am. I haven't heard much, and hope that it will count favorably for me. I have spent the last year and a half pulling straight As, gaining clinical experience, and volunteering in different labs. This better not count against me!

Hey there,

I have a Masters, and so far have received two invites to clinical Ph.D. programs. No official rejections yet. It seems to be going okay, a couiple of my schools have invited people, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for those ones:xf:

I didn't get my UG degree in Psych, so for me it was really important to have a Master's that showed my abilities within the subject. I couldn't see a Master's degree doing anything but helping your application, provided that you did well in the program....

I've been less anxious the last few days, as far as handling the waiting. However, my state is covered in a couple feet of snow today and so I am trapped at home. Bored...ruminating a bit? 🙂. I am horrified at the fact that I need to wait over a month (judging by last years post) to hear from IUP psyd!!!

So if you get a phone call from your POI inviting you for an in person interview and he says to call him if you'd like any information about the lab or program prior to the interview, is that something I should do? I'd rather save my questions for the actual interview, but if everyone else is going to be calling him, I don't want to look uninterested. I guess I'm just not sure if the offer was more of a politeness thing, or actually encouragement to initiate contact prior to the interview.

I'm finishing my masters degree. Previous colleagues (who have gone on interviews) stated more people are obtaining masters degrees first (at interviews many students had or were getting a masters).

Still waiting it out...

:luck:

I know! IUP's deadline was a while ago too.

Has anyone applied to LaSalle? Their deadline isn't until Feb. 1st! I applied early, but I wonder if they're going to be looking at applications before the deadline or if we'll be waiting until March to even hear from them.

Yes, I did. I think we will be waiting for a while. Did you also apply to Widener? I did not realize until yesterday that both programs charge full tuition during dissertation and internship year. Most programs do not. That makes me wary...

I am working on my Master's in Experimental Psych, which I figured would make me stronger in my research skills and further develop my ability to carry out statistical analysis. I'm applying to Clinical PhD programs.

I've heard that the only time when a school is wary to take a student who already has a Master's is when one wants to accelerate obtaining one's doctorate. In other words, most schools want the people in their programs to take their classes, rather than getting credit for graduate courses from another school. I am assuming that this is part of the reason why there are schools that ask for a person to declare the courses he or she would like to be considered as a sort of transfer credit on their very application to the program. Don't forget, too, that many programs fully support their candidates monetarily. Thinking about this further, faculty could assume that if a person is accepted into the program, he or she is in it for the long haul.

Finally, statistically speaking, people who are in Master's programs have lower GPAs and lower scores on GREs. While that is not necessarily so - for example, I have 3.93 undergrad, 3.97 undergrad psy, 4.0 grad; 680V, 720Q, 5.5A, 740 psy - the thing is that it just makes sense and for this reason: if a person can't get into a doctoral program because of their scores and grades but wants a grad degree, that person can get a Masters.

Thus, I would think that if you have or are working towards a Masters, don't make yourself out to be that person who is just trying to speed things up. Getting a Master's has it's positives and negatives. The way that the chips will fall will depend on how and why you have that Master's degree.

I am finishing up my Master's thesis and practicum. I haven't heard from any of my schools as of yet and none of them have been mention on this thread or gradcafe. I have also heard that more people are getting their Master's degrees before applying.

However, I have also heard that some programs would rather you not have a Master's degree before entering their program because they want a "clean slate". I don't know how realistic that is though.

This is my second year applying (after no interviews last year) and I just got my first invite, from my top-choice school, University of Oregon!!! I am so excited/nervous/happy!!!

Maybe this isn't appropriate to post here, since it's for a Counseling Psych program and not Clinical (I applied to both), but I am posting anyway in case there are other Counseling Psyc applicants here.

Congrats on the interview!! 🙂 This is also my second year applying after no interviews last year. So far, I'm 1 for 1 this year for interview invites, but no word from any other schools yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and religiously refreshing my email. Good luck to you this year!

Thank you! It was by email, which was just sent this morning, so keep you're fingers crossed - you may still get one from them!

Anyone else freaking out waiting for CUNY Grad. Center's Clinical Psych PhD invites?? Last year they sent out invites today... I know it's still a little early to be anxious, but of course today I'm snowed in sitting here by my laptop all day doing nothing but checking my email. Has anyone heard anything from them?

Hey all,
This will be my first post to SDN, and luckily its a positive one. Just received an invite for a phone interview at U of Utah today via email. Still setting up the date though.

just got an interview invite from American University! Interview date 1/28

Also, I don't know if this is uncouth, but it looked like other people were asking as well so I figured it couldn't hurt.

Would any of the people who have heard about interviews from Penn State, SUNY Stony Brook, or UVM (Vermont) be willing to PM me and let me know how they were contacted and who their POI was?

Like a lot of other people I am anxiously awaiting any feedback from all these schools and I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Question... and I know that it is a strange one, but after speaking with a professor of mine I can't help to ask:

Have you ever heard of a person being accepted without interview?

Me too!! I haven't heard anything from them either. This snow day has not been good for my mental health!

For what it is worth, I have two aquaintances who interviewed there last year, and received their invites two weeks apart. :xf:

Congrats!!

Has anybody applied to Fielding or has any thought about it? It's Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology is APA approved BUT put on probation which worries me. Did not apply but still consider it.

Does it seem like a good idea to apply to a program that is on probation? Considering how low APA standards are...

15% of students obtained APA internship last year.

15% is low or is it not??

Yes, extremely low. Laughable, even. You should be wary of any school who's rates are below 80%. In addition. Fielding accepts about 1/3 of applications. All bad signs

I was wondering this too! Anybody ever heard of this happening?

Yes, it has happened. Obviously, it is rare, but at least one SDN poster was accepted this way.

Has anyone who applied to the Psychopathology and Treatment Track at Northwestern Feinberg received an interview invite?

Well, I think Argosy's Psy.D. program has a high acceptance rate too

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for the schools I haven't heard from. One of the schools I heard from today (which I posted on gradcafe) has actually been named by several others who got interviews there - one of them got invited 6 days ago! This gives me hope for the places I haven't heard from who have already invited people by way of POI. Also, one of the invites I got today is for an interview that's only 2 weeks away. This gives me hope for the places I haven't heard from who will be interviewing in 2 weeks as well, since perhaps there are some POIs at those schools who will be contacting their interviewees this week too.

Now, I am just an RA who knows very little about this process, but I am guessing that just because some POIs from a university have already invited students doesn't mean that all invitations for that program have gone out. (In fact, if several people have said they were invited for interviews at a certain school that could even be representing just 1 or 2 POIs from the entire department who have sent out their invites, although pretty unlikely). I would guess that there is some variability in different POI's timetables for inviting people. For example, I know that my boss, who is chair of his department and extremely busy, does everything last-minute and would not send out his invitations until he absolutely had to. And others might still be figuring out whether they can afford more grad students.

Anyway, I just wanted to express that a lot of the process is a mystery and in my humble opinion I don't think it's time to start worrying too much until February 1. Several of the PI's with whom I am in contact said that they will make their decisions about interviews at the end of the month, so personally, I won't start worrying intensely until February comes.

Good luck everyone!
