2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you have heard from U of Mississippi (clinical phd), please pm me your POI and any other information that you have. I'm really interested in that program and I would like to know if they are still in the process of invites. Thanks so much! 🙂

I saw on gradcafe that Marquette (clinical) extended an invite, but no additional information has been given. Has anyone heard anything? I emailed them yesterday, but haven't received a response yet. Just wondering if its mass email, POI, etc . . .

I'm waitlisted at DePaul, other than that, I'm out, checking out Masters. Does anyone know anything about bumping your app from PhD to masters?

Hi,
I have to book my flight very soon but I'm nervous about doing so if the weather is horrible. I'm supposed to fly out Sunday night from Philly and my return flight would be scheduled for Tuesday morning. Does anyone live in the chicago area or know of a way I can find out if the school will still be holding interviews and if it would be safe to fly out? I know the school is closed until at least Thursday as it is blizzard like conditions in IL.

Does anyone know if Ferkauf's Clinical Psych (Health Emphasis) Ph.D. is finished sending invites? It appears as if they may have being that invites were received on 1/21;1/25;1/27 for interviews on 2/2; 2/3; 2/8, but with their application deadline being Jan. 15th, I'm curious if anyone knows if they'll have another round.

Panic is setting in hard. Thanks everyone, and congrats to those w/ invites!

I'm not sure if they're officially done sending out invites but I submitted my app days before the deadline and heard back a week ago. Sorry! Good luck with your other apps!

I'm in the Chicago area, and can share what I know. O'Hare has canceled all flights through tomorrow evening. Every university is closed tomorrow, and some are canceling classes even into Thursday morning. However, this is a first, as most universities here never cancel classes. So, I am certain that schools will open back up Thursday and Friday. As for how long it will take for air travel to get back to normal, I don't know. A lot of the country is being affected by this storm unfortunately, so I have a feeling things might be crazy for a few days.

Most schools starting shutting down and sending out emails well in advanced, so I do think that if interviews were going to be canceled, they would have sent an email out already. But just to be sure, why don't you send an email to your POI or the graduate coordinator? It definitely wouldn't hurt!

Best of luck! :luck:

Do you mean how does one go about applying to a masters program at the same school where you've already put in your doc application? As in, you just want to forward your application from doctoral consideration to masters? If so I can tell you about my experience, if not, then disregard 😉.

I wound up in similar situation my first time around--one interview, got placed on the wait-list, but then everyone from the first round of picks accepted their offers, so I was out of luck. The process was kind of unexpected: The program director called on April 15th and said that she was sorry to inform me that the applicant ahead of me on the short list had finally decided to accept their offer of admittance. In the next breath, she asked if I'd be interested in pursuing a masters instead. She had already forwarded all of the application stuff automatically when I had been wait-listed, and I had already been accepted prior to our conversation...so it was kind of like, "we can't give you a spot in the doc program, but you're already good to go if you want to do this instead."

Of course, the process is going to be different at every school. Many programs do not offer a terminal masters program, so you simply earn one in route to the PhD--students are not admitted with the intent of just getting their masters. Of those schools that do offer both, they'll often ask you to indicate on their app forms to check a box if you would like to be considered for a Masters program if you aren't accepted into the PhD program (This was how my school was, though I'm pretty sure that in my naiveness I had been so sure that I'd get in somewhere that I'd marked "no" for this question, and then they made me the offer anyway).

If you've kept copies of your app materials, I would check to see if these kinds of questions were asked, and, if so how you responded. In the event that they were and you said no, I'd guess it'd be a pretty quick fix to call admissions, say you would be interested in a masters after all, and then have them forward the materials to the appropriate people. If no such questions were asked, I would call the psych department secretary or the graduate school and ask what the procedure is...chances are they'll be able to take care of it for you and hopefully you won't have to pay yet another app fee, send your GRE scores again and all that fun stuff. In my experience, schools are pretty good about keeping application materials...I first applied two years ago, and three of the schools out of four that I re-applied to still had my transcripts and GREs on file so I did not have to pay to resend them...(one even waived the fee the second time around!) so I would guess with such a short period of time having passed, it'd be pretty easy to just send your file along.

Hope that helps, and hopefully you'll get some good news soon. Good luck!

I wonder during the interview for clinical phd, usually what's the ratio of candidates/acceptance for each POI, assuming that the POI will be taking student. Is it common to have 3 to 1? 4 to 1? Or 5 to 1 ratio?

Thanks.:luck:

Stupid spam made me lose my favorite thread!! 🙂

I'd say that varies heavily by program. However, in my experience (from what I've seen and heard), a ratio of 2 or 3 to 1 is the norm. If you've made it to the interview stage, then your odds of being accepted substantially increase.

Received an invite last week for clinical psych at Ryerson (in Toronto)

I think someone asked about these guys the other day; Pepperdine PsyD is up on GradCafe. I didn't post it, so I don't know details, other than it's there.

Apparently Hofstra's invites went out around this time last year by phone... The past 2 days, I've gotten phone calls from unfamiliar numbers, and they were BOTH wrong numbers!!! It's like someone knows and wants to mess with me, lol. I don't think I can take this much longer!!

I am waiting on Hofstra too!!!! And 5 other schools..ugh. This process is tiring.

Just to echo what has been previously said: Interview date is 2/28, Faculty will probably be making invite decisions on 2/14. I'm a 1st year in the program so if anyone has questions you can PM me.

Thank you! If I receive an invite, I will PM you for information 🙂

I wouldn't consider that conclusive evidence. There are a panoply of reasons why chronological reception of applications might not reflect the applicant selection sequencing for interviews.

The best thing to do is call them and ask if that program is done extending invites yet, though I wouldn't call them more than once a week anonymously.

if any of you out there have heard from the following adult clinical phds, could you please PLEASE pm me your poi? udelaware, umaryland - college park, rutgers, uwashington, penn state.

if you've heard, CONGRATS! and thanks in advance 🙂

I called Ferkauf. They are still extending invites for both the PsyD and PhD programs and will "probably" finish by the end of next week. I hope that helps anyone who applied to those programs. It is not time to pack up camp yet... 😉

I received an email yesterday (2/1) from Marquette's Clinical PhD progam assistant inviting me to an interview. The email noted that the faculty had finished going over applications and that they usually call, but due to the weather they sent out the email. The email also indicated I would receive a follow up phone call Feb 3 or 4 to confirm the interview offer.

I need some feedback from you all out there. When applying to one of my school's, I listed a professor that I wanted to work with. I received an interview from that school and spoke to one of the student's who works in this professor's lab. After talking to him, it turned out that the professor's research interests have changed and the lab doesn't sound so great to work in. I found another professor that I'd like to work with in the program, however. Do you think it would be ok to say that I want to switch professors during the interview or should I let them know before hand or am I screwed??!

Thanks everyone and good luck with interviews! 🙂

Saw an invite from USF was reported yesterday... Does anyone have any info about that? I haven't seen anything posted on gradcafe.

greetings all...
i saw where someone had heard from SIUC's clinical phd program. would that person please pm me poi. also, i saw they sent out mass email for rejections. if anyone has received one please let me know. the wait game is killing me...

Heads up, U Mass Boston is on Gradcafe. Some SDNers may be receiving invites via phone.:luck:

Personally, I would probably let the other professor and/or the department coordinator/secretary know about the shift in interest. This is because in many schools, it's the specific POI, and not the department as a whole, who will accept you. Thus, while it's possible to switch advisors after beginning the program, it's often frowned upon.

Then again, this depends largely on the structure of the program. If you don't come in under a specific POI and aren't expected to stick with the same one for the entirety of the program, then there might not be as much of a need to inform the program ahead of time. You could always ask the student contact to see what he/she thinks as well.

Wow, this seems like a tough situation. I commend you on recognizing what you what and feeling like you should assert it. JUST my two cents, but I would probably wait until I get accepted and I might even wait until I have started the program. Then come mid semester or even in the beginning of the semester would I switch. Yet, there are a number of ways you could do this. Some might say, be honest and transparent and let them know now and if they deny you then that's there loss. If you have another acceptance than its not as big of a risk. There are many ways you can get into this program and do research you enjoy, good luck on your decision making. I am happy for you that you got an interview and that you found out that this lab isn't right for you ahead of time. Best of luck!

Clinical phd interview invite, got a phone call from a fantastic(!) woman who I think is an admin. Interviewing on March 4th, but I don't think it's a group thing.

Just discovered that 3 of the 5 schools I'm still waiting to hear from are all closed today because of the storm...sigh...🙄

Does anyone know whether LSU has extended all interview invitations to their clinical program? Thanks in advance! 🙂

I spoke with someone in the psych dept on 1/31, and they said that not all interview invites had been sent out. Best of luck to you!

Congrats on your interview! I, however, am now having a heart attack. Checking my phone every minute. :barf:

could people who received invites from SDSU/UCSD experimental track please PM me your POI?

same for UMCP and UW child clinical track.

thanks so much!!!

Hey Guys,

I feel as if I can shed some light on the Georgia State situation since I've interviewed there before and since this will now be the second time I've applied. If you haven't gotten an invite by now, it's likely you are not going to get one. The reason for this is because the graduate school organizes the applications by statistic and then sends them to the dept. Meaning, they are looking at the more favorable applications first. It's sort of a weird setup, I'm not sure if that's how it goes elsewhere, but i've been told by many folks this is how it goes at GSU. It's kind of late but thats because there was a LOT of weather in Atlanta and they weren't able to meet as often (the psych dept that is). So, Sorry if im bursting bubbles for some, but when i called earlier today it sounded as if they'd extended all the interviews they were planning on extending unless a POI makes a huge stink about a specific candidate.

Thank you for clarifying.

I have 130 Rorschach responses left to code out of 230 for an assignment; I don't think I will get many done today. 😱

I have an interview on Friday, and I WAS trying to prepare for that. Now I think I will go and take a long shower and watch Desperate Housewives. I need something to calm me down! :scared:

I'm watching back episodes of "The Good Wife" as we type! 😀

The interview I have so far is a little over a week away. I already read their entire student manual twice, read some of the main faculty publications, and wrote up questions to ask about the program that weren't covered on their website or in the manual. 😉

Yet, I'll still prepare some more in the days before the interview!

I was wondering if anyone had heard anything in the way of interviews from Loyola? I called them last week and they said they'd be emailing about invites Friday (1/28) and Monday (1/31) but I haven't seen anything on GradCafe or here. Any thoughts?

They told me yesterday that they had already sent out some invites but that if your application hadn't been rejected, then you were still being considered.

By far the best tv show for distracting yourself is Pretty Little Liars. Forget the fact it's on ABC Family (home of the dreaded Secret Life of an American Teenager), it is FANTASTIC. Think Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives, and Criminal minds teenage crossover.....it's like CRACK. Not to mention the fashion choices on the show are either extremely  worthy or 😍 worthy. 😀

For what it's worth, I called Ferkauf today, and they said they will still be sending out invites for interviews this week & next week for the Clin Psych PhD (Health Emphasis) program. We shall see...

I'm not sure but I've given up hope at this point. The person I talked to one the phone (grad admissions) said that if you haven't heard anything by the second week of February then you probably aren't being invited.

If anyone is wondering..I emailed my POI at WSU today and was told that they are done extending interview invites

Was this a mass email?

I received an email yesterday (2/1) from Marquette's Clinical PhD progam assistant inviting me to an interview. The email noted that the faculty had finished going over applications and that they usually call, but due to the weather they sent out the email. The email also indicated I would receive a follow up phone call Feb 3 or 4 to confirm the interview offer.

Anyone else waiting on UMBC?? This is the day they invited people last year... my phone is extra silent...

I'm glad we can all go through this mess together 😳

Hi! Finally, I am posting after reading for so long...

for clinical psychology phd:
Anyone here heard from UMass Boston? or Rosalind Franklin?

Correct me if I'm wrong but these all have sent out interviews already and have finished sending them out:
UCLA
BU
UW Child Clinical Psych
Temple
OSU

Also, is there a number of interviews that you get that makes it seem like you will be in grad school next year? Like if you get 4 interviews that is a higher chance of getting in than if you get only 1. What is the minimum number until you are pretty confident about getting in?

THANKSS

BU and Temple are definitely done interview invites. If you did not get an interview, don't count on getting in...🙁

I'm waiting for UMass Boston as well--they said that they would be contacting us this week.

can the person who heard from texas women's counseling PM how the invite was sent (via mass email, etc.) or if you know if they're done extending invites? thanks and congrats!

Congrats on your interview! I, however, am now having a heart attack. Checking my phone every minute. :barf:

I called to see how long the invitation for interview process takes at Hofstra. Do not sit and stare at your phone! The process takes a few weeks. They don't sit and call people over the course of a single day or a single week. So, don't lose hope if you aren't called today, tomorrow, or even this week. 👍

Oh, and good luck! :luck:
