2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have about 4 left that I haven't heard anything from. The last post on last years invite list was in early March. So, I'd guess within the next 2-3 weeks there will be invites and then things will wind down until people start accepting/declining interviews.

I have 6 schools I haven't heard from. All six said they are still in the process of extending invites.

I am just curious. I just have two interviews so far, although I haven't heard from a few others, which I don't have my hope up at all. Shall I be worried? How many interviews will be "safe" enough? I am not saying stats wise and assuming that I don't behave inappropriately in the interviews. I start to feel nervous. And I become more and more greedy as I think three will make things safer.

so how many do you guys got so far? and is it common to be rejected by multiple interviews? I know how weird this may sound as they are independent from each other.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a number. I had 3 interview invites last year and I didn't get in anywhere. Having an interview increases your odds but unfortunately it still doesn't make anything guaranteed.

Would you mind to share some insights you gained from your interview experience? Or it's just by chance?

after obsessively checking this forum I decided I should just join and post, good to know everyone else is going just as crazy

got a letter in the mail three weeks ago saying my CWPost (psyd) application was incomplete, I've tried to contact them via email and phone and still haven't received a response, I get that they are busy but come on...I see some people have heard from them saying their apps are complete, starting to get worried though...

also anyone heard anything on Rutgers or LaSalle?(psyd for both)

I talked to the secretary today and she said they had begun to make calls to perspective applicants. However, I e-mailed the POI who responded rather quickly and she said they were still reviewing applications and that she hoped to extend invites by the end of next week but nothing had gone out yet. Who should I believe? Could both be right?

Both can be right as some POIs start to make calls faster than others. But you should listen to your POI as I don't think she/he has a reason to lie to you.

I called my perspective school today and the secretary said that they were starting to extend invitations. I e-mailed the POI and she said she was still int the process of review applications and she would not be sending out invitations until late next week. Who should I believe? Could both be right? slowly going insane. Any insight greatly appreciated.

They are independent events; they have no affect on one another. However, getting more interviews may mean you have a more competitive profile/application (in general) than people who get less interviews.

Believing that more interviews increases your chances of getting into a program is akin to what is called the Inverse Gambler's Fallacy.

Just wondering - it looks like interview invites are winding down from the looks of this thread, but I have a feeling that might not be. Anyone know when interview invites start winding down? Anyone still waiting on a bunch of schools? I'd just like to know where everyone else in the process.

Yeah I'm still waiting on 7 schools....

can the person who heard from texas women's counseling PM how the invite was sent (via mass email, etc.) or if you know if they're done extending invites? thanks and congrats!

I'm a current student there. Invites were done personally by phone by our admissions coordinator and yes, they have all been sent out. I believe we sent out 23 interview invites altogether.

Did anyone else submit their application to be considered for the school psyd program at nova southeastern?? I'm just curious if anyone knows if they're making that decision at the same time they're making the decision for the clinical psyd applicants.

Thanks!

I thought TWU's Counseling Psych program didn't interview--is this no longer the case?

Also, I'd be curious to hear from any school psych invitees at Oregon and Texas A&M, please. Thanks! 🙂

Those last ones were definite outliers--I'd say invites should really wind down within the next week or so, with perhaps a few "stragglers" later.

Are Umsl and wyoming done sending out invites?

St. Louis u and UBC haven't started yet?

Sent out a bunch of e-mails to see what the status is for some of the schools I applied too...heres what I found out...

University of South Dakota sent out invites today mass e-mail and e-mail from POI

University of Kansas- They are currently making their short list for interviews

Idaho State University- Currently contacting students for interviews

Illinois @ Chicago- all invites extended

University of North Dakota sent out invites today by mass e-mail

Sam Houston State- All invites extended by postal mail. Rejection letters were sent today (i'll be expecting one, lol)

Bowling Green State University- all invites extended

I think thats it?!

Anyone heard anything from George Washington University?

What in the world would everyone do if they had 3 interviews on the same weekend?????????😱😕 (ahhhhh)

Just wondering....but I e-mailed a couple of schools that I KNOW have already extended invites but I have not received a rejection letter from to just inquired about my admission status...(because it still says "Under Review" when I check the app status online) They told me that they hold applications and just because you didn't get a interview invitation doesn't at all mean you are going to be denied admission?

I dunno but I know a TON of people in the field and I have NEVER heard of anyone getting into a Ph.D program without an interview? Have you all?

To the poster of ASU's counseling psychology PhD program: was the invite extended from your POI or was it a mass email? Thanks!

What in the world would everyone do if they had 3 interviews on the same weekend?????????😱😕 (ahhhhh)

I'm kinda in that boat right now. I'm dirt poor from quitting my regular job to do lower paid flexible schedule work, plus 2 unpaid research assistant jobs and clinically related public service volunteering, so 8 schools was the max I could apply to. I was super careful to pick only the absolute best research match programs (ended up with 7 counseling psych and 1 clinical). Of the 4 schools who've notified so far, I've gotten 4 interviews. 1 is on Friday feb 18th, and the other 3 are all on feb 21st with events the night before. 😱

All of these are great match, fully-funded programs but have low acceptance rates, and I want to see them all in person. Also, I don't want to risk reducing my chances by doing phone interviews in lieu of site visits, since I CANNOT afford to spend another year going into more debt like I have been with my unfunded master's program, and the economy in the city I live in is dreadful (shoveling 17 inches of blizzard snow from my driveway the other day also strengthened my resolve).

Anyway, luckily 2 of the schools were willing to let me interview right before or after their official dates, so now I'm going to be traveling all over the country to 4 interviews in less than one week, sleeping in airports/train stations a couple times since I can't afford hotels everywhere, and trying to juggle with midterms for my master's classes. Mostly I'm just SO HAPPY to get this many interviews already. It feels like all my hard work is finally paying off, and I'm SO LUCKY to have these opportunities. I just hope I can find some decent vegetarian foods at the schools/airports/etc, or it might be a slightly less happy week of interviewing for me.

I haven't had time to check this site as much as I'd like, but I have to say that everything I have read, both current and from years past, has given me some much-needed perspective, humor, mirrored hopes and fears, and desire for all of us to succeed (I even caught myself shouting "YEAH!!!" at reading about cara susanna and hamsterpants getting in off waitlists after all their struggles. Nothing but the best wishes for all of you SDN-ers! Sorry for the book, and hope you all get into great programs! :luck: 😍

StrangeVision - you rock. I respect and appreciate your determination and hard work! Congrats on your interviews and I wish you the best of luck! I hope you get in at your top choice. 🙂

Also, I have a recommendation for you. There is a site that was mentioned somewhere on this forum called couch surfing: http://www.couchsurfing.org/.
I've never used it but apparently you can crash on people's couches if you're not able to stay anywhere else! May be a good option for you instead of sleeping in airports and train stations - you want to be well-rested for your interviews!

Best of luck again, I'm sure you'll do great 🙂

Good luck to everyone who has yet to hear from some of their schools! It sucks that you all have to wait longer but it may be worth it in the end. 🙂

Thanks UhOh! All the best wishes in the world to you too! 😀 I'll have to check that site out.

Also, I'm cracking up because I just checked on the other 4 schools that haven't sent invites out yet, and 2 of them had interviews on the same day last year, so if I'm lucky enough to get more interviews when those go out, I might have another crazy week in early March too!:roflcopter:

i've heard nothing from UWash-Seattle for (Adult) Clinical.... 🙁 i'm guessing that means i'm not considered? 🙁

Adelphi: No 'official' interview invite yet (so don't freak out) but emailed the clinical psych administrator at Adelphi and these are the interview dates:

"More-or less full day (10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) on a Wednesday, either February 23rd or March 2nd"

Sent out a bunch of e-mails to see what the status is for some of the schools I applied too...heres what I found out...

Illinois @ Chicago- all invites extended

Ouch, I felt a pain in a stomach when I read that.... UIC was my top choice. At least nature softened the blow by pounding Chicago with several blizzards (ha,ha). Hopefully, this will reduce my OCD behaviors and I can get back to work. Good luck everyone!

FYI - GW is sending "2 or 3" more invites today and sending out rejection letters today or tomorrow.

University of Memphis is on GradCafe...someone received an interview via email on 2/2/11. Does anyone know if the email was from the POI or if it was a mass email? What's the interview date?

(I'm assuming the person who posted on GC is also on SDN.) 🙂

I would suggest not counting out UIC just yet. I literally just hung up the phone with them (the grad. admissions coordinator). She said that she is unsure if all invites have been extended, as she has not received the final list from professors yet. It sounded to me as if individual POIs are to call about interviews, however; she stated that she wasn't sure if this had been done entirely. Maybe it has..maybe it hasn't...who knows. But I'm not counting them out yet!

Spoke to the graduate admissions sercretary for the Clinical Psych program (not child) and she said the invites would be going out next week. :xf:

so, i have 4 interviews, 1 quasi rejection, and i'm waiting to hear back from 9, though i think some of them are a definite NO based on other postings here and grad cafe.

waiting for news from:

vanderbilt (invites out already?)
chicago school
wayne state
u florida (gainsville) (invites out already?)
loyola u (invites out already?)
ucla (invites out already?)
nyu (pretty sure invites went out, not sure)
fordham (invites already went out tho)
wash u st. louis (invites out already?)

anyone know anything about the above? clin phd for all. don't feel like calling any of them, and would rather someone on here tell me since it's better coming from a fellow student, in some weird way 😳

btw, anyone interviewing at Long Island University tomorrow? it's my first one. i live close by, so if anyone wants to like, grab a drink or something afterward, or pick my brain about brooklyn, i'm down.

UCLA - Invites out; are this weekend
Fordham - same as UCLA
NYU - doesn't have a Clinical psych program. Are you talking about Applied Psych (Counseling, School, Developmental) - If so, Interviews are 2/18 and invites aren't done yet.

I haven't spoken to anyone else.

Hope this helps.

M

If anyone here is interviewing at (or has any questions in general about) University of North Dakota's Clinical program, feel free to PM me.

Who was your quasi rejection from? Just wondering if I got the same one.

Columbia TC counseling sent out invites and acceptances (through email) last night/today and said that for the most part people will be reccomended for the Ed.M or waitlisted (not sure if some will be rejected right away).
I didn't hear back in any of these forms, I simply talked to admin.😡
Good luck to TC counseling people!

I called WUSTL and UMBC this morning...

Wash U St. Louis - All interview invites have been extended for Clinical Psych Ph.D. program

UMBC - Applications for Clinical Psych Ph.D. are still under review. Invites should be extended by late next week.

Called NYU Couns and they said they haven't sent out interviews, so I am a bit confused with the post of an invite from NYU.
Anyone know what's up with this?

Last night I had a pre-invite Skype interview with a POI, and from things I learned in this conversation, this school which had been toward the middle of my list very quickly rose to the top. I have a VERY strong feeling I will be invited to interview. Thing is, I found out their interview weekend is at the same time as a school I already accepted an invite to. I kind of want to cancel my invite to this other school which is really at the bottom of my list, so I can get the full interview weekend experience at my new top choice school. What is the etiquette regarding cancelling interviews at other schools? How do I go about that? 🙁

I applied to Wayne State as well and have yet to hear anything. Based on last year's thread, they don't have their interview weekend until end of Feb/beginning of March, so I'm thinking that invites have NOT gone out yet.

I would wait until you officially have that interview from the first choice school. That being said, if you really would rather go to the first choice interview and aren't that interested in the other school, it benefits not only you but someone else who will most likely then get to interview at the other school. Chances are you won't be accepted at the other school, but if it's at the bottom of you list anyway, would you care?

You could always email the person who extended the offer if you don't want to call and cancel. I believe it isn't that rare to cancel interviews, especially later ones as people get acceptances earlier.

Schools are definitely starting to wrap things up. Two rejections today (nothing shocking or uspetting though).

Good luck to TC counseling people!

I really hope this was just the first round, I've been waiting to hear form Columbia, just talked to them yesterday in fact and they told me they couldn't provide a timeline but should expect decisions to go out "in the spring". Can anyone provide any more information/confirmation on the emails from Columbia?? 😕

Also, I'm appealing a rejection from SFSU on the grounds that they miscalculated my GPA (the only reason they gave for the rejection was failure to meet minimum GPA requirements and I know my GPA is higher than the 2.95 that they calculated). Any advice/words of wisdom from anyone else who has ever attempted to appeal an admissions decision??:scared:

Good luck to every body, here's hoping we all get some good news and can relax a little--lord knows this process is akin to torture!

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone has heard anything from UWisconsin-Madison. I know they don't do an admissions committee and that they are all based on the individual faculty member as per their website, but I am just curious to see. Thanks.

Just wondering - it looks like interview invites are winding down from the looks of this thread, but I have a feeling that might not be. Anyone know when interview invites start winding down? Anyone still waiting on a bunch of schools? I'd just like to know where everyone else in the process.

I was under the impression that some schools had multiple interview dates -- a first round, second round type of thing.

Does anyone know if this is true.... or simply my desperate wishful thinking?

...an official rejection from fordham👎

congrats to everyone who got invited there (and other places)!!🙂

I thought TWU's Counseling Psych program didn't interview--is this no longer the case?

Also, I'd be curious to hear from any school psych invitees at Oregon and Texas A&M, please. Thanks! 🙂

They experimented for a few years without interviewing and are now going back to interviews (which will be re-evaluated again in two years, I think).
