This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@ megathunder: true. theres so much information around just didnt wanna get my hopes up. and i guess ill do the same wit the secondary

@ maica: i applied to NYCOM as well. did u get it by email or snail mail?

one more question: for Touro-CA, do you really only have that limited amount of lines to type up an answer for the short answer questions? you can basically only get in 3-4 sentences. and I was wondering if people talked more experiences vs why osteopathic medicine in the touro personal statement question because the way the question is phrased, it doesnt really ask "why D.O." but more "what do you know about D.O.?

I haven't gotten NYCOM's e-mail yet either (I know they e-mailed me last year)

The question for Touro is asked sorta "what do you know and how does it incorporate into your future plans". Thats how I took it at least. I wrote about how I learned about DO, what I know and how it fits with my personal beliefs for becoming a physician. I'll be mailing it off tomorrow. Also finished UMDNJ tonight (finally). The worst part is writing checks, I don't have much cash so its hard not being able to put Touro's on my CC.

Newest Updates:
Rec'd and Completed: LECOM-E, LECOM-B, KCOM, AZCOM, CCOM, UMDNJ, Touro-Ca

Still Waiting: Nova, PCOM, PCOM-Ga, Touro-NV, Western, NYCOM

Also received my first rejection today from EVMS :-( sad times and what will be the first of many I'd assume. Guess I didn't meet their pre-screening requirements. Sad too because they have one of the lowest average GPAs in the country for matriculation.

For those of you waiting on a Western Secondary (not sure if this has been posted) the link from last year goes to their new secondary application and instructions. You can get a head start so you can mail it out the day that you get the invite.

http://prospective.westernu.edu/osteopathic/secondary_application

EDIT: It links to the new instructions but apparently not the new secondary. Jumped the gun, sorry. You can monitor when it goes up via that link though so I'll leave it lol

I don't understand how it works... Do you do it online in that PDF, then print it and send it in my snail mail?

Save the PDF to your computer, fill out, print and send via snail mail. Thats last year's app though so wait until the new one comes up.

Thanks Dan! Looks like the instructions are up for class of 2015 though, and secondary is only going to be $65!!

That's a plus.

Western was 65 last year as well. Not sure where people got 100 or whatever was being thrown around earlier.

Just emailed Lynn Huckle at Touro-CA about the limited space on their questions. She said you can add an additional sheet to the back of the secondary with answers.

Just received a LECOM-B Interview, again! lol Noshie see you on August 27th 😉

Is lecom-e sending out interviews too or is it just lecom-b so far?

Is lecom-e sending out interviews too or is it just lecom-b so far?

Someone said something about receiving a LECOM-E Invite earlier in the thread so it seems that both are handing them out.

If you get the score in time and they have reviewed your app then yes. If they dont like your first mcat score then it will be difficult. Best suggestion is to stay optimistic and study for mcat

anyone know?

Yes, for the Touro-CA secondary, write something completely different. If they wanted you to write the same thing, they wouldn't be asking the question. They've already seen your PS. Your personal statement probably isn't completely about your desire to become a physician, either. So expound upon the question and take the opportunity to include things you couldn't fit in your PS.

Yeah I thought about that, and it really probably would be faster, but there still is a chance my committee could send the letter sometime in July...just depends on where you are in the pecking order. October is more likely though.

I've got my fingers crossed :xf:

Got NSU's secondary today! Zing! Still waiting on PCOM.

Awesome!!! I figured you would get it! Again! Haha. We really all need to get together and have dinner the night before or something 🙂 How are we going to know who’s who?

I got the NSU one too! Just submitted it... Woot! This week has been SUPER slow on secondaries. I think this is only the second one I have received this week... 14 more to go (DO and MD)! Pretty good actually, I’ve turned in 32 so far. And I’m broke….

I'd be down for dinner the night before. I'm planning on flying out early Thursday morning from Ca and then leaving either Saturday morning or friday night. Last year I stayed Thursday->Monday because my grandpa lives in Orlando, don't think I can afford that this go-round.

I just got NSU's also. Submitted it. My last LOR is now in Interfolio as well so all of my letters are being sent out this moment. Busy (expensive) day. Also re-writing some of my Touro answers after finding out that we can attach more to the secondary for the two limited space questions. Plus submitting Creighton's app, writing USU, Tulane, etc. I'm not sure how I'm going to afford my plane ticket to Bradenton... AHHH!

I got a confirmation from Nova that they receive my primary and asked me to submit th secondary online. They did not send me any userid/pin. When I clicked the link, I go to the page which ask me to create a userid and password. After creating userid, when I login, It ask me to pick up application type but the list application type is blank.

Any one succesfully submitted the secondary at NOVA?

I'm not sure what the protocol was because I had a login for last year but when I selected which program DO was an option. I'd contact them tomorrow. It literally takes minutes to fill out, no essays, nothing but a couple of lists takes any time.

Not really, she just said add an additional sheet of paper to the back of the secondary

can we add schools to our list after we submit our application the first time?

Oh man. I mailed mine in last week only using three lines. Oh well.

I know the application says it takes 4-6 weeks for processing...is this fairly accurate? Just wondering when I may be getting supplemental apps!

thanks for the responses regarding my questions. i definitely have an idea how im gonna answer some of these questions.

@ surfinchic6: thats good to know. i think i will add an additional page to the touro-ca one but prolly answer the short answers with only a small paragraph. dont think they'd want that much if they only provide 3 lines to begin with.

and congrats Dbdan! i agree that trip to Fl is gonna be more $$$ than i mite be able to afford. and i just got 3 MD secondaries

question about NOVA: what did you guys say for status of the app?
ex. applied fall 2011, name of school, awaiting/submitted secondary?/under review/etc,?

I added a ~1000 character statement for each of the two questions. I felt that it can't hurt me. I used the 3 lines last year and didn't get in lol

The flight to Fl is 300, ugh. Plus I've got about 4 pending MD apps, which happen to be some of the most expensive ones I've got. I already know I don't have enough money if any more secondaries come in the next week or so, not good.

For my 2010 apps I simply stated the name of the school I was applying to. I feel like it is too early in the cycle for them to expect an app status. For my 2009 apps I put in the results

I feel your pain, man. This application business is pricey, but, unfortunately, we need to keep doling out cash until we have an acceptance we want. I just checked, and my cost is up to $3,411 and I still have a ton of secondaries to complete... (that includes my MCAT and $1580 for Kaplan though, but even without it's ~$1,600)

Last years 27 schools Primaries: 1300
Last year's secondaries: ~1500
Last year's interviews: ~600
MCAT Class: 1800
MCAT: 225?
---------------------
Total: 5425

This year's primaries: 1158
This year's secondaries: 625 so far (1285 remaining)
-------------------------
Total thus far: 1783

Sooooo on this app process in the last two years (not including the 3000 I've dumped into additional classes since undergrad and whatever money I didn't keep track of applying to 5 SMP programs + hundreds on transcripts being sent) I've already spent 7200+ lol This **** is ridiculous

Um... Can you say "third time applicant." Yeah, the amount of money I have spent is in the ridiculous range right about now. I feel you DBDan... I went to grad school, retook some undergrad classes, took the MCAT 5 times and paid a crazy amount on all the extras... Sometimes I feel like they are totally exploiting us because they know we will pay anything to become physicians.

But this season alone, just on applying and secondaries, I have spent:

Primaries- TMDSAS, AACOMAS, AMCAS= $1561
Secondaries- $1710
Interview this season (the only one I have ever received, ever!)- $56
TOTAL= $3327

Luckily, my interviews are going to be cheap I think. My dad works for AA, so he’s paying the taxes on my tickets (the tickets themselves are free), but they are all standby, so it may be risky! And for my interview coming up, I’m rooming with another SDNer that was kind enough to contact me and offer this split! Splitting that actually turned out awesome! $56 for a room and car! Wow!

I calculate just for secondaries I still have $1045 left… That is if no one rejects me outright, which I’m almost hoping some of the schools do because I don’t want to waste any more money! I’m glad this is worth it… And if I get into Texas, where the tuition is super super low, it will be in the long run… :xf:

Hey everyone 🙂

Quick question - do all schools send you a secondary upon receiving your primary, or do some schools screen? If it is not too much trouble, could you tell me which schools screen?

Also, will schools send you a secondary even if you have not taken the MCAT yet (even if you have listed a planned date on AACOMAS)?

Thanks so much for everyone help's through this, and good luck to everyone on upcoming interviews, you guys so deserve it! As soon as I get my first interview, I'll share the good news as well :luck:

Thanks!

Haha. Yep. And it just gets more expensive as we go along.

Did you end up deciding against the SMP's?

I applied to Tulane's ACP (rejected), EVMS (waitlisted), Tufts (waitlisted), Drexel (waitlisted) and Western (accepted w/ linkage)

I decided against going to Western even with the guaranteed acceptance for the following year just because it was SO expensive. I couldn't bring myself to spend 50k essentially to buy an acceptance into the next year's class where I'd get to spend 75-80k/yr for 4 years. Western's tuition is already disgustingly high, I can't imagine adding another 50k debt to it.

LUCKY!!!! I wish that I got free tickets! Last year when I interviewed at Bradenton I got the Lakewood Ranch Holiday Inn for ~$40 for a night and my rental car was only about 20 dollars a day (my insurance company gives me discounts). The most expensive part by far is getting to Fl and back to Ca.

Looking at last year's thread it looks like NSU started handing out interviews around the end of Aug to interview at Aug's end or beginning of Sept. If I'm really really really lucky maybe I'll get an NSU interview for around the same time so I can just buy one flight lol

There are some schools that will just immediately send, many screen for at least a minimum MCAT and GPA (both of which are normally pretty low). Some schools will look past the fact you don't have an MCAt when sending a secondary but they will likely wait until they receive it to mark you as "complete" and begin reviewing your application

I've already finished the NYCOM secondary apparently. I did it last year and its still on file. Aside from a couple of bad dates and missing a couple of things its still good (I can use the add to application link to fix that). Maybe it'll save me $60

Would it be wise to wait for an e-mail from NYCOM if you're OOS?

I finished mine and I am just waiting for the email to submit... I think it's always wise to do this because you don't want to waste money if they are thinking of giving sending you a rejection letter pre-secondary (has happened to me before...).

I don't think I'd be rejected pre-secondary...but I hear they are so unfriendly to OOS people that I'm not even sure if I should apply there. So if they send everyone a secondary invite e-mail, IDK if it's worth it.

Thanks, DbDan! Oh, and congrats on your interview!

And congrats on your interview as well, noshie!

Have a good day everyone 🙂

I'd requote myself, but NYCOM website says specifically that EVERY applicant is invited to fill out and submit a secondary application. You get that email ONCE you fill it out....

Yeah, that's what it said, anyone can fill it out.

They want everyone's $60 bucks!

(But just like any school I imagine, all make money on secondary apps even if they won't plan on accepting you, etc.)

But yes, to confirm what mmikey said, the website does say:

It's pricey, but, I agree, worth it in the long run. Congrats on your first interview! It sounds like you have had one hell of a road getting hear.

Yeah, I don't blame you. I had the same thoughts about the SMP programs. It's like buying a second look or your way in at some schools, which is just way too expensive, plus you factor in lost wages from that year for work and interest that will accumulate over ~15 years and you're looking at losing ~200-300k for that SMP. With your success thus far this year, it sounds like you made a great choice.

Oh, I did just want to note though, Western's tuition is actually 45k not 75k. They just calculate living expenses and add it in to the total. 😉

Yeah, that's what it said, anyone can fill it out.

They want everyone's $60 bucks!

(But just like any school I imagine, all make money on secondary apps even if they won't plan on accepting you, etc.)

But yes, to confirm what mmikey said, the website does say:

Yeah, but $60 is a drop in the bucket compared to the MD secondary price tags. I was really happy to learn that most DO schools are comparatively inexpensive to apply to, but they nail you on the back end by locking you down with a 2k deposit.
