Hey Labs, is the 33 your drawer number or age? (I'm not making fun, it's just interesting to see where screen names come from. 🙂)

some may want these info:

The final deadline for EDP file completion is August 15, 2010. Final interview invitations will be extended by email early in September, and EDP interviews will be conducted September 13, 14, and 15. Please plan for short notice on EDP interviews.

We expect orientation for the 2011 entering class will begin on Thursday, July 21, and end on Friday, July 29, 2011. Because orientation is mandatory for all new students, you should note these dates on your calendar today. Classes will begin on August 1, 2011.

Thanks for the information! This is very valuable... my husband I were just talking today about when I would have to quit my job and move up there. Yes, I am a little ahead of myself as I haven't even submitted yet.... 😀

You'll be fine buddy and keep up the confidence!

Heck, you're still a baby... I'll be 30 in Dec!

Hey guys did you all check your e-mails? haha jk but seriously how stoked is everyone that the meds page is up?? 😀

I guess I'm going to submit the secondary today. Anyone else? Then, two months of inactivity lol.

No not touching it till I have to haha. What's everyone's take on campus locations/preferences? Would you want to go to salina? I feel like doing that is almost like specializing before you get your MD (specializing in rural/primary care). While I'm totally open to that, I would want to keep my options open and get the experiences of a tertiary care hospital.

I agree. I think those programs are likely to provide a convenience for those students that have already made up their minds, but to the rest of us they probably won't be that appealing.

Yeah, I don't think I would choose Salina, but Wichita might work for the things I'm interested in. I'm kinda torn because I would like to get the experience at KC, but it would be super nice to not have to commute 3 hours on weekends.

I'm from Salina and it's a no no lol

It's so boring and quiet like a cemetery. There's a Walmart, small mall, and couple of subpar bars. It's just not as lively as Lawrence or KC. Btw, I just had a dream and in it I was accepted into KU pharmacy school. I was so happy until I realized what was wrong with the picture and started to cry. I guess it was a nightmare lol. I'm a guy btw lol.

Actually sounds like my cup of tea. haha

Sorry to hear about your nightmare, lol, I've been having some about me going bald 😕

lol I'd like some nightlife activities sometimes, but not all the time. To clarify, I cried in my dream not when I woke up lol. Let's hope the nightmares won't come true for any of us lol.

Haha, creative use of the smileys--the question marks look like the last few dangling hairs ready to let go. I also have those dreams...🙄

hahaha I was actually going for actual confusion of what a balding dream might mean. I'm not that smiley-literate but good eye.

I bet I set a record for the fastest anyone's ever reviewed all the content for the MCAT. Hopefully the time spent cramming has an inverse relationship with my score :meanie:

You'll be fine bud. As you already experienced plenty, a lot of it is seeing through the MCAT mind tricks lol. Good luck!

ha ha - I hear you on the one! I'm sure you did very well 🙂

Geez guys, I need some inputs on this 😕. We haven't discussed much about Letters of recommendation. How do you handle yours? Do people get accepted with only 3 letters? Even though the writers agreed to write them and seemed to be happy in front of us, how do we know if they wouldn't slam us behind our backs? Do all the letters have to be stellar? If so, would 3 stellar letters be better than 5 mediocre ones? What if all of the letters are only so-so, would that slam an applicant to the point of rejection? The LOR part is such a huge mystery! I'm thinking about dropping one of my letter writers Geez 😡. I feel like the whole app process is like a criminal court system, where we have to fight hard for our innocence. So, a clean criminal history probably doesn't help much in connection to LOR? If there's a dent in criminal history, then it's over too? One bad LOR, it's over! A dent in criminal history, it's over! Bad interview, it's over! Bad essays, it's over! Bad spelling, it's over! Bad grades or MCAT, it's over! Accidentally knock over your interviewer's cup of coffee, it's over too! lol Geez. Thanks a bunch guys!

Hmm, good question. Our premed advisers collect our letters for us and let us know if we need to get another letter if one of them isn't very good. Then when we are ready to apply they send them in for us. I feel pretty lucky at this moment in time...

Yah, that just about sums it up. If you didn't look twice, you'd think we were applying to become politicians or CEO's. It does say something about the caliber of people that make it and become doctors, though.😉

 at that last part. So true!! I was thinking this, like all the old docs I've shadowed were like "I don't remember anything being very hard about getting in". So is that just their time and era, or are we tripping out because of SDN? lol

And about the letter part, I was thinking the exact same thing. One of my letters was just submitted to AMCAS and I was like, what if he totally ripped me? What if he decides to talk about one of my weaknesses?

But I'm sending 5. I think they will all be good, but will any be what they are looking for? I have no idea. I could get to read them all and still not know if they will cut it. So really all we can do is send in our best app, best PS, best MCAT, best GPA, best letters, best secondary, and do the best we can on the interview......And hope that cuts it against the ~2,200 other applicants. lol

wow, that will seriously make your best better

I go invited last week, so I thought i would go ahead and post the essays for everyone. Theres a bunch of them.

As a student, what is unique or special that you would bring to KU School of Medicine?

Describe your experiences facing or witnessing discrimination. Tell how you responded and what you learned from these experiences and how they have prepared you for your future in medicine.

Give an example of what you have done to make your community a better place to live.

Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to address this challenge.

Describe any of your special interests and how you have developed knowledge in these areas. Give examples of your creativity: the ability to see alternatives; to take diverse perspectives; to develop varied or original ideas; or the willingness to try new things.

Describe examples of leadership experience in which you have significantly influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

What experiences have led to your decision to become a physician?

Yeah, that worried me when I was first looking for recommendations, but I picked up some books on applying to graduate school and they suggested just asking outright if the person is willing and feels able to write you a constructive letter of recommendation, so thats what I did with all mine, it actually took a lot of stress off of me.

Yeah, thanks for that... I guess I don't feel confident I will be able to express that all during an interview. Just explaining and talking about what I think it all is and why I want to do it.

@ - another trailblazer here. Dad's an auto mechanic. I honestly don't see why it makes a difference, though. As if I'm going to decide to start working on cars with my bio degree, lol.

Trailblazer here too. I have a younger half-sister that is finishing up her accounting degree next May and going on to get her masters, but neither of my parents finished college. My dad started but dropped out to go back to work on the farm. Considering the length of time it has taken me to get by bachelor's degree, I would hope they could see that I am a patient person and willing to put in the time. ha ha ha

@ jaydoc, well I meant thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure whether you meant a family member that is a physician is a good or bad thing. I wouldn't be considered a trailblazer then, my dad's a doc. But he never pushed me into medicine or even told me what I should do, just offered advice when asked, answered questions, etc. My impressions was that even though I have that "connection", that the adcom will still want to see in the interview that I know what I'm getting myself into, and that I know why I want to do this and it's my choice. So I was saying I am not confident that what I know in my head/heart will be clear during an interview.

Wish me luck (or ill if you're the competitive type)! Driving down to Stillwater, OK to take the MCAT. Exam's at 8 in the morning. :luck::xf::luck:

GOOD LUCK!!!

gl omzy
btw, you know how ku uses your best scores for each section out of all the mcats you've taken.. i wonder if your previous (outdated) mcat counts for that?
if so, you got nothing to worry about 🙂
(and if not, i bet you'll do better this time anyway. so no worries still)

edit: btw not a "trailblazer" either.
i feel it's a bit of a trade off for both sides; the non-trailblazer has disadvantages as well.
on the one hand, yes you grow up somewhat knowing what you will be getting into.
on the other hand, i feel like your motivations are more suspect. you have to prove you aren't doing it for your family's expectations or to follow in their footsteps.
you have to work to prove that it's something you want for your own reasons.
everyone has to do that, but in the non-trailblazer's case instead of a clean slate there are also reasons you have to refute.

Good luck Omzy! And thanks to everyone who contributes! BWSTW, are you applying as underrepresented/disadvantaged since your dad has been doing farm work? Farm work is pretty hot because they like physicians in rural areas. Thank you Jaydoc for your contributions. This year's secondary has this first question, "What experiences have led to your decision to become a physician?" So, i guess they want a clear view from an applicant. Well, I guess I can't do anything with my letters now since all five of them have been submitted and posted.....no idea what goes on in those letters. So, I guess I should just move on to the interview part and hope for the best lol.

Well, I didn't grow up in Kansas so wasn't sure if I should. I figure I can explain my understanding of the importance of rural docs in my essays/answers, plus I will end up in a rural area after residency anyway so I will be making that a big point too.

I'm pretty sure they'll like it if you bring it up. Rural is not me at all lol.

Lol yeah, I grew up in a small town - 3 in my class, moved my jr. year and graduated with 58. Then I moved to Tucson and lived there for 7 years and now I am in Kansas at another small town. It was pretty crazy living in AZ at first, but now I actually miss it! lol

I live in town right now, but I know my husband hates it and wants to move out of town and find some land. I'm not looking forward to driving 15 mi to go to store or do errands. I'll have to plan out things a little more lol.

So who has submitted ED? How long did it take to verify? I've heard that ED applications verify quicker, but I am wondering if this is true. My score won't be released until the 20th, so I am wondering if I should even bother submitting ED with the chance that it won't be verified by the deadline and just go RD. Thots?

ED gets verified in a couple days. Mine got verified in a day.

That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. =) You know, paranoid premed style.
