i have a question on the secondary-- on the last essay where it says to make a critical analysis of scholastic achievements and your personality on the pursuit of medicine............are we just supposed to talk about how our academia and personality influenced us into pursuing medicine and why medicine is the right decision and how our attributes play into it? or are we supposed to critique ourselves and our qualities? im confused.

I was unsure about this one too. I wrote about 1. why I am qualified to be a physician (that's the "critical analysis" part) and 2. why I want to be a physician (for the "realization of professional ambitions"). That seemed like the most straightforward response to the prompt, but maybe a current student at FSU would have a better understanding of that question.

ok bc my essay so far is about how my academic/personality influenced my decision to pursue medicine and why i would make a great physician. is that off base lol?

No that doesn't sound off base at all. I would say that's a great approach to the prompt... but I'm no expert.

Okiee thanks 🙂 Going run with this unless a current FSU student has any different advice.

I'm not concerned about being late. I am just curious if they were getting sent to people before their scores were posted. Thanks though

I've am taking the MCAT on 7/16. I have received either a secondary or a notice saying my application was on hold until my MCAT scores are received from every school (except FAU -- but I don't think anyone has heard from them yet).

However, I have taken the MCAT once before, so even though its not good, I have a score on file, so I'm not sure if having NO score is treated any differently.

sorry if this is a real ignorant question, but how do I change my status as an early decision applicant??? 😀 I checked the web, but it only describes what it is without explaining how to

You have to do it through AMCAS. There is a checkbox for Early Decision under the school after you selected it.

thank you. so that means, I won't be able to send my primaries to other schools until late September or October? wow, this scenario could be scary cause if I am nervous that day and mess up my interview, I could be late for the rest of schools... 😱

Yeah, that's kind of a risk with EDP. Are you in Florida or applying OOS?

so on the secondary, alot of my fun and diversion and miscellaneous activities are sports and artistic endeavors. is that a good thing or should i aim towards telling about things that are more directly related to medicine?

I would definitely list hobbies/artistic endeavors! They will see our work/activities in AMCAS, so I would suggest listing things they do not know about you. That's what I anticipate doing - as I graduated from UF majoring in advertising & dance. Since I majored in non-science related studies, I did a lot of non-medical things. I think they would like to see that.

Okay. Yeah I don't have an MCAT at all yet, so I was just wondering. Currently I am in the process of being validated, so I was just curious as to whether I could anticipate secondaries before my scores are posted. I hope so.

I know there are always people who worry about step 1 scores and what not for each school, so I figure I will mention it on here.

My class (2013) got their scores back today..well, most of them did. While one tends to hang with people with similar goals, it is entirely possibly to do very well on step 1.

Out of my friends, most of our scores have been around 1 standard deviation above the mean. (around 240 is 1 standard deviation) Basically, if you work hard then FSU gives you all the tools to succeed on Step 1.

I don't like sharing my exact score, but I had a 27 on my MCAT and scored in comfortable range, so don't believe that crap about MCAT predicting USMLE.

+1 on the 27. I'm in the neighborhood of FSU's average.

Letters submitted today!

I hope you guys are brushing up on the war chant 😀

That's what you have to love about FSUCOM - they've got to be doing something right with results like that (i.e. defying the predicted odds).

Sending my secondary in tomorrow after one more proofread from an advisor - crossing fingers on this one more than any other - just feels like it would be a great fit!

Just submitted my primary 7/13 so it looks like I will be waiting a few weeks... great time to a head start, though!

Hobbies portion--I believe I mentioned something about being addicted to terrible TV (law and order, etc). Be candid, they'll appreciate it.

Critical Analysis--On mine, I spoke about a very personal issue/crisis that impacted my academics a bit. I knew that it was an issue that would come up in the interview anyway, so I just wanted to get it out in the open so I was in control of it, rather than having the adcom make assumptions. And to show that I'm strong enough to talk about it, etc. The ball is in your court on this part--serve the begeesus out of it.

Love that FSU is the first screenshot on the new NCAA 2012 ad (see SDN home page). 👍

Hey ladies and gents,

I am from class of 2015. I know some of my fellow FSU COMers from 2014, and 2013 (MossPoh, I love you 😍) have already introduced themselves and given great feedback/perspective. I know because I stalked this forum pretty extensively during my app cycle last year. I just want to let everyone know that FSU is an amazing school. I am a UF grad and I was accepted to a number of FL schools. Some of my former classmates gave me flak for choosing FSU over other schools. I can tell you now that I haven't regretted my decision for a single second.

While I am sure that MossPoh, Sammich and others are more than able to answer any of your questions, I want to throw my name into the pot should you need to PM someone with inquiries. As someone who just went through the app cycle, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability.

Stay classy boys and girls.

fsu rocks!!!!

😛 no complaining about waiting until you've been on a waitlist!

Hey, I was on the waitlist for their super competitive K-12 school! Back then, the ratio was 1 student attending to 12 waiting. I got accepted in 8th grade...What's funny is, I didn't really want to attend, but now I can't imagine graduating from anywhere else.

Fun side note - I checked in with my 10th grade chem teacher a few months ago. He built a freakin space simulator after I graduated (using the Orbiter software, free download btw). I'm thinking of making a trip over there 😀 Space for me = Disney for 4 year olds.

Apply early, interview early, get accepted early, enjoy the rest of the year!!

😀

I am EDP :] Everything's in, but I haven't gotten that "complete" email just yet. Might take a few days since my letters were only uploaded last Friday.

sounds like you missed your calling 😛 ooooooooooooor you could do SPACE MEDICINE

Yeah albert einstein is the school notorious for that, i think they explicitly say not to submit the secondary before notification though.

either way, good luck to everyone!

I believe ED interviews are in september and october

Jkchang10 and SisterDisco08, I wanted to wish both of you the best of luck in this app cycle. I didn't post very much but was right there with you guys in that small wait list. I'm sure both of you will be where you want to be next year! Best of luck! :xf:👍🙂

Ha I firmly believe we can do this! Thanks for your confidence, and best of luck to you too! Hopefully we're classmates at FSU this year!!

How do we know when we are complete at this school? Do they send us any type of "complete" email?

I ask because my status page looks like I've been complete for a while, but it doesn't explicitly state that I'm complete.

Thanks!

If you log in and look under Review Status you should be able to see your progress. I have a line on the day I submitted the secondary that says "Application Complete" followed by a separate line that states "Application Under Review by the Office of Admissions." I haven't seen any additional updates since then. I also got an email that day saying my application was complete.

Thanks for the response. I think I might need to email them, then.

Good luck to all the applicants for 2012! The hard work doesn't end here but its definitely worth it!

I heart you too butler.

Sorry I've been quiet lately guys. One is kind of busy on surgery rotation and when I'm not, I'm usually sleeping. 😉

If I can figure out how to get my phone sterile, then there wouldn't be a problem. Although, I'm not sure the nurses would appreciate adding an iphone to the count, nor would the patient appreciate misplacing my phone in their abdomen.

Surgery is so much fun though. Anatomy lab just isn't the same as living tissue. The structures look completely different. Plus, it is an odd feeling that first time you feel someone's heart beating against your hand while pushing bowel out of the way.

hahaha my insides are tingling.

Any ideas when we could be hearing about interviews? I know the website says 2-3 weeks to process but I thought the FSU begins interviewing in August? Doesn't leave too much room for maneuvering.

Check out the timeline on the admissions page. They should be sending out invites next month (which is in like three days).

If last year is any indication I think ED applicants will hear, at earliest, in the last week of August about interviews. For regular applicants it will be a little while longer.

What he said...I just hope applying much much earlier this year gets me an interview before St. Patty's Day. By my interview last year, the class had already been filled.

Very nice. I just read the following on the FSU website:

Applicants from underrepresented minority groups, applicants from rural and inner city backgrounds, women, and non-traditional applicants are of particular interest.

Do white, traditional applicants get in here? I'm starting to get worried lol.
