Thanks for your help too! I saw you on last year's thread as well. Are you an incoming MS1?

😛 Chang and I were both "high atop a relatively short alternate list" and not enough room opened up for us in the incoming class. After all was said and done, Dean Patrick told me I would have been one of the next people offered a spot. But only ~4 people dropped their acceptances last cycle.

So short answer: no, we're not, but we know a heck of a lot about the application process at FSU because of our experience last cycle!

Well I suppose you are a very good resource now! Did they tell you what you needed to do for a better shot this cycle? I am starting to really freak out because I have not taken my MCAT yet (scheduled Aug 6) and so I am worried about secondaries and being late in the process. Also, last semester I got a couple of B's so it took a beating on my GPA 🙁 But since I do not have an MCAT score yet and I cannot really gauge where I stand a chance. Any pointers or comments? I appreciate all I can get as I am a nontraditional applicant (graduated UF with BS in Advertising and then went back to USF to finish pre-reqs that I did not get to at UF).

I'm a non-trad too, but opposite of most (I graduated from undergrad in 3 years so i'm on a super funky schedule)

They were very helpful in the reapplication process. Unfortunately for me, the advice was pretty much "move to florida" 😛

The later MCAT shouldn't hurt you if you 1) do well and 2) have everything else verified and ready to go beforehand.

From what I could tell, "fit" to FSU is just as, if not more important than numbers. So as long as you're not super below their averages, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the help. Is FSU one of your 1st choices? I haven't seen the campus yet, but I hear it's nice and new. I also heard Tally isn't too nice. As far as numbers go, my GPA isn't BAD, but it's not as high as I'd like it to be. I'm glad they consider "fit" for their school bc I have done medical trips to places like Costa Rica and Peru and I loved it! However, I do like cutting-edge research as well and have been at schools which are big on that. Also, it's really different that years 3 & 4 are at another place. Do you know whether a lot of students seem to like that? And are there other places you can go besides the regional campuses? I find this aspect of FSU COM to be really interesting 🙂

Awesome! Thanks for your help! I saw you on last year's thread too. Are you a FSU student now?
As far as validation goes, when I "submit to AMCAS" I know it wanted me to choose my med schools that I want to apply to. Does this have to be decided and paid before I can validate? I cannot find this info anywhere. Thanks again!

Well you saw what sisterdisco said haha so no not a student.

As far as the validation, I'm not COMPLETELY sure so don't take my word as the law, but I'm fairly sure you can choose one or two med schools at first and pay for them and then once it's validated you can add more med schools whenever you want.

Thanks for the help...AGAIN. lol. I just want to validate my app, but I don't have MCAT scores yet so I am not positive where I stand a chance yet you know? I don't want to spend all the money applying to schools that I may or may not be able to get into and if I do really well I don't want to not be able to submit my AMCAS there...this process sure is tedious and costly lol.

Oh and anyone know when secondaries go out? If they're out already would anyone mind posting it at some point? I'm going to work on these immediately after my MCAT 🙂

I don't think they're out yet, but I haven't sent my primary in yet either. And you can always look at the previous year's thread cause the questions will probably be the same or very similar.

Also, you should definitely apply to all the florida schools

And GO GATORS! we're playing in the baseball world series right now! woot!

Yeah AMCAS hasn't received my transcripts yet so I'm waiting on them to be received before I submit for validation since there won't be much point in submitting it sooner. Is FSU your #1? I'm wondering about the whole year 3/4 relocation...have you heard a lot of good things about it? Also, have you visited FSU COM? I've never been to Tally!
And yes, GO GATORS! Are you an alum as well?

It is top of my list, I was blown away when I visited for the interview last year.

The students I know there love everything about it, and the relocation thing is actually a really up-and-coming model for med schools. I like it.

As far as Tally goes, I'm from Detroit...so I'm a little biased, but i didn't think it was bad.

I'm not sure if FSU is my number one but I really liked it when I interviewed there last year so it definitely went up on my list.

As for the 3/4 year relocation, I've heard good and bad things, but a lot of it is - well Tally sucks so it'll be nice to be out after 2 years haha. Not to mention apparently the doctors on those other campuses are really dedicated to the medical students and you don't stuck behind the 4th years/interns/residents/etc. You get to work directly with the doctor.

And yeah i visited FSU COM when I interviewed. It was really nice - I'd say probably nicer than UF (because it's newer). Of course then I visited Stanford's Med School where my sister graduated and was like... dang. lol

and yep! I graduated in '10. Sucks we lost a tough game tonight to USC =(

I am applying here this cycle from UF as well. As far as the off campus stuff goes: I am doing some shadowing in sarasota in the ER right now where some of the FSU 4th years are doing rotations. I spoke to some of them about their experiences with the off campus stuff and they seem to really enjoy it. In fact, I was so impressed with one of the students account of his experiences that it has brought FSU to the top of my list. IMO, doing rotations this way allows for a diversity of experiences that you might not have had otherwise. Also, nice to know FSU is switching to pass/fail! Im excited to be sending in my primary in the next month or so and definitely hoping for an interview here!

Wow that's awesome that the 4th years feel that way because FSU is at the top of my list right now too, but I just wasn't sure about the relocation thing. What did they say was their fav part about FSU COM? Also did they say if it was fairly easy to acquire the campus you want? I hear they get a lot of hands-on experience, which is a huge plus! I'm really hoping to get an interview here too! I know they aren't as about "the numbers" so I feel like it's really hard to gauge whether I'll get an interview or not. I'm really hoping so though :xf: I would've done early-decision here or USF but I don't have MCAT scores yet.

Hey everyone,do we have to include all the SAT/ACT scores if we have taken these tests more than once?

Is anyone else having trouble saving your courses? It's starting to get quite frustrating.

Honestly I couldn't remember half of them so i just put the one ACT i could remember.

Ok thankyou! 🙂
I was just worried... I had to actually go back to collegeboard and find my SAT scores...

All moved in at my new location in Pensacola. We just finished 3 days of orientation. Orientation is just another way of describing a slow painful death by powerpoint, although they tried their best to make it as painless as possible.

I officially start my surgery rotation on July 4th (Yea, I know...) All I can say about the hospitals that I have toured is that they are all VERY nice. Baptist and Sacred Heart are both pretty big time. I also think they are both in the top 5% for outcomes in the country. West Florida is a little smaller, but not much. They all offer an excessive amount of technology. EVERY hospital we toured had the da vinci SDi system, which is really unnecessary with at least one hospital having TWO of them. Sacred Heart has a pediatric intensive care unit and a NICU, which are not always a given and many serious pediatric cases are flown there from about a 200 mile radius. By the time the class of 2016 would get here, the new tower would be complete and they'd have some ridiculous amount of ICU beds. I get the impression that the only thing holding them back from Level 1 trauma is that they don't want to hire all the extra people involved.

Every clerkship director I've met here has seemed awesome, as have all the faculty and support staff. Obviously I can't speak for other campuses, but our dean and the others are all awesome. The first day a bunch of them gave us their personal cell phone numbers in case we needed anything.

There was a very minor problem with my attending going on vacation next week, but within 5 hours another surgeon volunteered to have me for the week. Everyone here really is like a family. They are very aware that this is a new city and overwhelming experience for many of us and do all they can to make it easier.

I have no doubt that the training here is solid. Our dean mentioned how some of the prior graduating classes have emailed or called him and said how boring intern year is because they feel like they were downgraded in responsibility a bit.

We are also treated as UWF students for all intensive purposes. I have a UWF ID card, parking pass, etc. If we want to use their gym and rec center, it is like 50 bucks a semester, which is really the student activity fee.

I will try to update how the first rotation goes. There is a mixture of excitement and terror swirling around right now. It is nicely compounded by the anxiety of step 1 scores which come out in 1 to 2 weeks.

Hey MossPoh - are you from Tallahassee/Wakulla?

Yeah, it has a lot of questions.
Do you guys mind posting the secondary questions? I applied in the 2008-2009 cycle, so I don't know if the questions are still the same. I'm waiting for my AMCAS to be verified and was wanting to get a head start on the secondaries.

I'm a UF alum and FSU is my top choice! 😍 Best of luck to everyone!

Hey MossPoh - are you from Tallahassee/Wakulla?

Kind of. I spend the vast majority of my childhood in a small town in Indiana after my parents got sick of South Florida. During high school they bought some land in Wakulla and started building a house. When I graduated, we officially moved down there, although unofficially we were down there a lot of my senior year considering I was sleeping on a mattress on the floor in Indiana. So, I'm technically a resident of the Leon/Wakulla area and know much more than the average undergrad/grad student about it, but not quite local material. That probably isn't a bad thing when it comes to Wakulla. 😛

Well, I've been here a long time. & yeah, Wakulla is interesting. I work in research at FSU & we use the Wakulla school system for some of our social norms stuff. I just noticed the "WillKillYa" in your info - I laugh when I see that on trucks.

Yea, I got ripped on for my "fancy beer" when I brought yuengling to a cookout once.

I wish my SAT score were my Step 1 score, although that is impossible.

MossPoh! We literally switched places! Haha, I should have let you take over my place out in Pcola! How do you like it man? Too bad you'll be gone before I make it back over that way!

BTW, Yuengling is about as down home 'Merican as it gets....

I have no idea how to respond to the prompt

"In what field of medicine do you envision yourself working ten years from now?"

Am I the only person who has NO IDEA what they would like to specialize in? Should I just speculate, or would it be okay to say that I have some ideas based on volunteer/shadowing experience, but I won't really know what I want to do until I finish my clinical rotations. Also, is it okay that this won't be anywhere near the 500 word limit?

In my opinion, I think it is perfectly acceptable to say that you are not sure yet. I have heard that medical schools prefer students with an open mind, as most that go in with their heart set on a particular specialty often change their mind anyway. I am going to write just that. I like certain areas, but how can we really be certain when we have not done rotations? I actually thought I wanted to do one specialty and then after spending a week with a doctor in the field I was like "no way!" lol because it wasn't like I perceived it to be.

Are all of you guys that received the secondary verified already? Just wondering cause my app is waiting to be verified...

Of course. AMCAS has to verify you & then forward to the school before you'll get the secondary invite.

thanks, though just to let you know that's not the case with all schools. Some places such as Boston University and George Washington (and a couple others) send the secondary immediately after you submit your AMCAS. Even if you're not verified yet.

Was just checking if FSU did that or not. And it's not. thanks!

Hmm...well good thing you're checking in. While scrolling through some of the other school threads, I saw some are getting instant rejections for not waiting on their primary to go through. & just to ice the cake, the secondary fees aren't being refunded. Sucks. Luckily FSU is $FREE.99 anyway :]

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool of FSU to have no secondary fee, especially for a school that emphasizes service to people without a lot of resources.

Yep - FSU is just awesome like that! It's a recurring theme I've seen ever since I went to their middle & high school (FSUS).

Yeah albert einstein is the school notorious for that, i think they explicitly say not to submit the secondary before notification though.

either way, good luck to everyone!

Has anyone received a secondary to any school before their MCAT scores were posted? If so, which ones?

If you're going for FSU Early Decision, the last MCAT they're taking is July 16th (making the Aug. 6th date too late). Scores for that exam are released like a day after the deadline for all secondary materials (Aug. 15th).

If you're not going for EDP, then no fret 😎 you have time.

Do you know when they start making interview offers? 🙂

Every year since I have applied, the interview offers have been all over the place and not really linked to when you were complete. If you are early decision, then you will hear fairly quickly. I believe they start those interviews beginning of September or late August and continue from there until they are complete. Once the last early decision interview is done, they start churning out lots more regular admissions. I was complete within 24 hours of it even being possible and didn't get my interview until November. I literally interviewed at 7 places before then. Part of it was probably because I wasn't that strong of an applicant though. 😉

I'm not concerned about being late. I am just curious if they were getting sent to people before their scores were posted. Thanks though
