34R, 3.9gpa, instate, nontrad. preinterview rejection #8....beginning to think there's a red flag somewhere

I am shocked! Sorry to hear that. Have you gotten interviews anywhere else yet, especially at state/OOS-friendly schools? If not, you definitely want to check with admissions that declined you and see what's going on.

I have asked at 3 schools so far, all have said "we don't give you specific information on why you weren't accepted"

Some schools aren't so nice about it. If it comes down to it, ask at the end of cycle; I've heard they're more receptive to answering questions then. But I really hope you get in this cycle! Those are great stats! :xf: for you

Are there any that will actually tell you, either now or at the end of the cycle?

Often your state school will. Also, UIC offered to in my rejection letter even though I'm not from Illinois.

Like Octopus said, many will be receptive to that request at the end of the cycle. You can either call and schedule an appointment with the director of admissions, or submit a request in writing. This is a good idea if you don't get in anywhere, so you can fix whatever concerned them for upcoming cycles.

Hey does anyone know who I should address my letter of intent to? Thanks 🙂

They told us to just send everything to the admissions office. Are they receptive to LOIs? Ive heard about some places that are (Gtown), but the few times theyve actually been mentioned at an interview I was at was to say they consider them meaningless (ppl change their minds a lot, waitlist movement happens, etc). I mean, I can't imagine they would count a LOI against you, but if anyone knows anything, do tell.

I remember specifically that Hofstra likes to receive LOI. One of the people who talked to the students on interview day said "we like to receive LOT because who likes to date somebody that is not interested in them, right?"

I did send one addressed to the Admissions Committee.

Yeah I was actually interested in this too. Hofstra is my first choice for medical school, and it always has been since last year, but does anyone know for sure how receptive they are to LOIs?

I think the official place to submit one is online where you logged in to schedule the interview, but does anyone know how they're governed? If I submit one electronically will they place it in my file and read it when I am assessed, or will it never be read?

I called them about this. They said they can't gauruntee they'll look at it except if someone happens to open your file... Keep in mind we only have a 10% chance at acceptance AFTER interviewing. I would prioritize sending a LOI or update letter to another school that you interviewed before sending it to Hofstra.

Haha, I'm not going to send a LOI to a school that is not my first choice...then what happens if I get into Hofstra?

wouldn't your own college/university pre-health office do that as well?

They could, but many don't have an inside look at a medical school admissions office and know how they work. Plus, each school is looking for something different in the applications they review. One school may be looking for more volunteer committment, even though you may have a standard amount. Calling the admissions office after a rejection is a good way to improve your app for next cycle for that school, if need be.

I interviewed in mid October as well and haven't heard anything. This wait is ridiculous.

I know they have to carefully control their acceptances since they can't over-enroll. Maybe they're hoping that some people will get other acceptances and withdraw before they ever have to make a decision on them.

Does anyone have the address for the school that can be put into Mapquest and/or car GPS?

Did anyone take the shuttle to Mineola after the interview? Is the 3:10pm out of Mineola too close to catch?

It'll depend on how on time everything is. We caught that train perfectly from what I remember. But either way, I think you should be good but your better off calling the admin office and asking them the specifics

By the way, for anyone staying in the Marriott...use the booking link provided in the interview confirmation e-mail, not the one on the website. The e-mail link gives a better discount.

I wonder if this this admissions committee is taking a nap or something... How is it that only a couple people have been accepted so far?

you don't know that... you can't conclude that only people who are on SDN are accepted. During my hofstra interview, many didn't even know about SDN at all. Should they be accepted, we won't know about em.

As a Hofstra NSLIJ student, I can tell you that several of my classmates, myself included, had never even heard of SDN before we started school. So you have to consider that many accepted students may not be registered on SDN, and not every one who is will necessarily post his or her acceptance.

i just called --

acceptances are sent out on a rolling basis anytime from your interview thru july
mid-march is when they'll email waitlist or rejections

Dude, the school accepts about 120 ppl total. At this point all the acceptances haven't gone out yet. How many accepted ppl are on SDN? And quick to post their acceptance?

Hey did anyone else get an email from the assistant dean for diversity and inclusion today? I interviewed Jan. 13th. Did everyone that interviewed get this email? Just wondering, Thanks 🙂

Holy moly! I interview this coming Monday...I hope they send me a decision (read: acceptance) within three days too!!

Accepted! 😀 yesterday via email, interviewed on 01/19

Those that interviewed in January and were accepted - did you sent any letters of interest or intent after your interview? Thanks!

Not sure if you're also asking me...I technically interviewed in February. I did send (by snail mail) a letter of interest but I'm pretty sure I was accepted before they got it.

I did not send a letter of interest and at my interview they told us they don't consider letters after interview. They suggested to send one if you are placed on the wait list, but they want to keep everything fair and only consider what is already in your file while making the initial decision. You can always send one, but I'm not sure if it will be considered based on what they said on my interview day.

It may still help subconsciously; I don't remember them saying that although it's possible I missed it since my interviews ran a little over. That said, a letter of interest doesn't really add anything to your file, otherwise it's technically an update letter.

Either way it really can't hurt to send one, it can only help.
