I have my interview scheduled for February 13th, and I'm trying to reserve a place to stay from now. Does anybody know a cheap place to stay that's still easy/quick to get to Hofstra from? And how to get to Hofstra from said place?

Also, I'm completely open to sharing a room with somebody to cut costs.

Thanks in advance!! ^^

Stay at Days Inn.
Take taxi to Hofstra the morning of interview and make sure to take all of your stuff with you.

I also got an acceptance back in that first batch in January. I'm pretty sure I will take the acceptance, but I'll have to make a decision when financial aid comes out. I would need big money from Hofstra to beat out my state uni, so I will more likely than not eventually give up the acceptance.

I have an interview coming up here.. wondering if I can leave my bag + coat somewhere at the school, or if I should just leave it at the hotel? For the latter, I would have to pay for an extra night even though I have a flight booked right after my interview. Any suggestions on what I could do with my stuff?

You will be going outside during the day, so you will want to have your coat.

There's a room you can leave all your stuff in during the interview. It's the breakfast/meeting/info session room, but just leave your bag under your chair and your jacket on the back of it.

Does Hofstra accept post interview update letters / letter of interest? Or not unless we're waitlisted?

I read somewhere in this thread that the adcom meets at the end of each interview day and makes a decision? Does anybody that has interviewed/any current students know if this is true? Seems unlikely, but it is a new school so who knows?
And if so, post interview update letters would probably not be helpful...

i don't think this is true... i believe they told us that the committee wasn't going to meet and make final decisions on any applicants until January (which is why that's when the first batches were released)

they said they did this to ensure that they could review all the applications before they made decisions on who to accept (since secondaries i think were due in december)

so i can't imagine that they would change the process for people who interviewed after january... altho i could be wrong and/or could have misunderstood

that seems like the most likely scenario..I just remember reading that factoid on this thread a couple of months ago....probably just another SDN rumor haha

What I was told during interview day back in December was that they were going to vote on our files a couple weeks later, send out the first batch of acceptances in January, and that we'd know anytime from January-July a final decision . My gut feeling tells me that there's some ranking system that they have post-interview. The people that got accepted in January probably had the highest ranked scores and they'll release batches of acceptances as the year goes along based on who deposits, withdraws, etc.

I don't know for sure but my guess is my update letter and detailed thank you notes sent to Hofstra post interview had something to do with my early acceptance. One of my interviewers basically went on about how important showing interest is.

In terms of the school, if it wasn't so new, it would probably be my first choice. I love the curriculum, the building and the clinical opportunities. However, I don't usually like to take risks!

To secure your seat you only need to click accept and pay the deposit right? Is there anything else you need to do to hold your seat? I got the message:

"Thank you for submitting your deposit to hold a seat at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Please continue to check back to view your confirmation packet, containing additional information on the matriculation process. "

after logging in. The deadline to respond is tomorrow for me so just want to make sure everything is set. I wanted to call the office but it is past 5 in the East already. Anyone can confirm this with me I would appreciate it.

Dinged pre-interview at 1:52 Pacific time today by email. Good luck to the rest of you still waiting.

I asked about this at my interview and was told that they do rank us.

Btw, for those who have been accepted, i was told that March 31st/April 1st are two re-visit days.

You can come in and tour the school again, but also look for living spaces for next yr (they do have dorms and their cafeteria does have unlimited sushi....).

anyone else going? maybe we can share hotel or something.

cheers,

When I interviewed.. they said that they would meet about our group 2 weeks later and that sending update letters, loi etc. were pointless bc they had already met at that time and made a decision about us.

SO im not sure about sending in stuff for now. I can imagine LOI and updates are good if we are W/L... but I guess we don't really know when that status comes out

If you don't mind my asking, when did you interview? I interviewed recently and I'm wondering if I was after your group or not. I was on the 13th of Jan. Thanks!

Does anyone know when their last interview will be?

i interviewed 10/21. they made it clear that sending after the 2 weeks would be pointless. they said they decided on us at that point in time and would hold off on releasing the decisions until January

Hope the waiting this year isn't as bad as last years... 🙁

Alright so im interviewing at hofstra soon and I just wanted to clarify / summarize the tuition situation :

8-10k per student general award for everyone
Northshore lij loan (up to 60k at 5% with deferment ) - this is based on need , but do most all students get this??
Need based scholarships using both fafsa and hofstras specialized form - since this has its own form is it more generous than most schools ? Do most students get at least a little something ?

If anyone could clarify this , that would be much appreciated . Obviously with all of these variables its tough to even compare the cost of this school with other schools I'm looking at.

5k per yr (20k for 4 yr total)
NS-LIJ Loans are for need based, i was told that later if you work in LIJ system, then they actually waive this loan (perk certainly for those who wishes to continue to work in the area. actually i think this is a HUGE perk)

i don't think hofstra is the only one that require specialized form btw.

thank you for the clarification!!

but obviously, there are too many variables for me to really... try to think i have this hammered out...

i'll just see how it goes, and if i'm accepted... i'll see how it all shakes out....

still tho i am interested in hofstra for non-monetary reasons, it seems like a fantastic program... i don't want to see like a total mercenary ha 😵

do focus on your interview before worrying about what ifs right now. it's always getting your 2nd foot into the door that is the hardest. once that happens, choice is alll yours.

good luck!

Anyone interviewing here this Monday 1/23 still looking for a place to stay? I have a room for Sunday 1/22 with 2 beds at the Marriot right up the street if anyone's looking to share a room and save some money.

Also, anyone looking to maybe share a cab or shuttle back to the Long Island airport after the interview on Monday? lemme know if you're interested

Have many people had luck with in-the-area emails? I'll be at NYMC on 2/7, and was wondering if it was worth it to send one.

could a current student comment on the grading 1st and 2nd year? thank you

For the first two years we receive a grade, the kind that goes on a transcript for each vertical course, Structure and PPS. Those course grades are P/F. That's it, no honors, low pass, etc... Just Pass or Fail.

*The first course, CPR contains an EMT component, and for that the NYS EMT curriculum gives you a numerical grade, but that's the NYS end, not the school.

Within that assessment are other, periodic evaluations of you that are meant to direct but are not course grades: meets expectations, meets expectations with recommendations, does not meet expectations. The idea with those is to give you an idea of areas you can improve instead of just one blanket Pass or Fail. every 12 weeks, or once per year in the case of Structure and PPS.

We also take NBME practice tests that we get a numerical score on. The score does not factor into the course grade at all, it is just to see how you're doing.

Some people study more than others, but its nice to not be competitive for grades or attention with each other. There's definitely an incentive to share notes, ask for help, study in groups, etc...

Is there a taxi service (or other transportation) in the immediate vicinity of Hofstra? I have it all worked out to get to within 3 miles of the university via public transportation, but I don't know how to traverse that last leg! =O
