Walked around Rochester this morning, got a little awed standing in the park by the Mayo entrance with all of the clinical buildings looming overhead!

Get used to it - Mayo is just amazing like that

I wonder how much of the "Mayo mystique" is really just a self-fulfilling prophecy. When everyone else is going gaga batsh*t crazy over the school, how can you not agree when you're finally there?

Future research topic? I think so. Im going to use a selective for this 😉

good luck! They'd be crazy not to see/appreciate how much you want to be there. Far and away your number one?

Far and away. 🙂 And yes, I hope they noticed and appreciated my enthusiasm, though I'm not sure how they could have missed it. I have no poker face.

I took pictures.

Some of it - that's basic psychology, that you're swayed to group opinion, and when surrounded by a group of the same opinion, everyone becomes more extreme - but I fell in love with the school for Mayo's own sake, not for the mystique. I liked some schools more than I thought, and others less than I wanted, but Mayo lived up to all my expectations, and more.

You really can't judge or trust your own perception of a school until you visit.

+1. This summarizes my application cycle so far.

Sooo is it safe to say that if we were in one of the very first (like first two) interview groups and we don't get a call next Monday, our chances aren't good? I mean if they didn't like us the first time around, it's not likely they'll choose us once they've seen more candidates....

Your odds of being accepted after the 17th (or on the 17th) are well under 50%, but since the acceptances aren't based on a pure numeric ranking you're not out of it at Mayo 'til you get a rejection. For all you know you might be runner-up in the all important "left handed cello player" category*, and if the Adcom's first choice (a left-handed Olympic javelin medalist who plays cello for the Berlin Philharmonic) goes elsewhere you're all set!

NB: If you're not left handed and don't play cello then you probably aren't the first *or* second choice in this category.

Not true. At every acceptance meeting, they open up every file (including everyone on the waitlist) for re-discussion. So if you are ranked before the 17th, you are in better shape than someone who was ranked afterwards, presumably.

Plus, they generally take ~30-35 people off the waitlist.

by "waitlist", do you mean they take 30-35 people off "hold + waitlist"?

Yes. It is my understanding that if you do not get an acceptance/rejection, you get put on hold. 30-35 come off of it.

This thread makes my heart beat really fast for some reason. Pretty soon I'll need a double dose of my blood pressure meds.

Wait, so I will be accepted?

Do you guys know if everybody is on equal grounds if granted an interview here or do they re-review whole app again? Kind of worried since my MCAT is well below their avg and my interview coming up soon :/

My guess is that they do a complete review. I have yet to hear from an admissions officer from any school that I've applied to who says that acceptance is based only on the interview

Still not ranked. I haven't paid too close of attention to this thread, have most late September interview folks been ranked?

If you're ranked after September 17th, when do they contact you? It can't be that long because being ranked basically means your fate has been sealed...

I would really just love to get into Mayo and stop going to med school interviews 😀

Not all September people have been ranked.

They contact you when they contact you, about every two weeks. And no, ranking does not seal your fate.

EDIT: In response to nadaba's query, no school decides just on interviews, but from what I have gathered, Mayo cares more about the interview and about a good fit for the system than most places.

Thanks for the response guys. Also another question, has anybody had luck booking at the Kahler Grand Hotel using the promo code that was provided to us? It doesn't seem to be working for me.

Okay, thank you! ...Also, for those that interviewed already: how are they like? Conversational? Is the interview feedback on SDN representative of the types of questions (considering how most of the posts are years old)? Thank you guys!

The interviewers will definitely know your app, so know it too. They were pretty conversational for me, moreso than some places, less than others. The SDN feedback was fairly representational, but it also depends on your interviewer.

Good luck.

2.5 hours and no biters, huh? In actuality, I give it an 11. Amazing everything.

Some of us have actual work. You know, like class and stuff.

Did you just have your interview? I did tell you that you'd love it.

Class and stuff? I'm just golfing and layin' out in the not-so-warm sun all day. Ignoring the fact that two employees quit last week and I have four spots on my team to fill. Not to mention the fact that we're almost $50,000 short of our monthly budget and it's only the 10th....

I had my interview within the last two weeks, and yes, I loved it. I'm almost scared to be in such a small class (they'll know all my secrets!) and Rochester was lame, but my complaints stop there.

no response after 3 weeks from lor received...what is my fate?!?! D=

Hi all, I love everyone's enthusiasm about Mayo 😀. Sorry if this question has been asked, but I've read most of this thread and didn't see it anywhere.

I submitted my primary app to Mayo in early September and got the "fee received" email on September 9th. I haven't heard anything from them since then. At the point when I submitted my primary to them, I had already assigned my letters to them (before any LOR request). So my question is, if you assign your letters to them before they send the LOR request, do you still get an LOR request email? Thanks!

Yup, you still get an email. Good luck!

Ouch! I have faith in you, and just think, you only have a few more months left (hopefully). At least you're nearly done with interviews, so you can concentrate on the necessities (and the same goes for me). Interviews are fun (sorta) but they are exhausting and time-consuming.

Glad to hear that you loved Mayo! Rochester is small, but whether or not that's a fault is dependent upon yourself. I'm finding that I like smaller places than NYC, for instance, but YMMV.

That really narrows it down :meanie:

I am amazed how you all found out my number one secret top choice. Simply in awe but alas, when I visited it was just too much awesome for me to handle.

I am glad to have you back here, Leo, even of you are a bit of a/an [insert here].

Sorry Northy! If we're classmates down the road, please don't hold it against me. Snuke: it's great to be back. My life feels complete (minus an acceptance).

Still waiting for the ranked email, I thought last night would be the night.

I got my ranked email on a Wednesday, so it looks like some weeks they do Wednesday meetings instead of Tuesday.

I heard that the rank on Tuesday (there was one yesterday) - the people ranked will get email by Friday (according to MMS staff)

Great, so now I can obsess about that all week 🙂

God I need a life. All I do is work, volunteer, workout, and read premed forums. I am only fueling my neuroses! Mayo send me an interview invite already!! My email provider is going to start charging me every time I hit refresh...they will be rich. I need an intervention...😀

Just talked to Gina. Interviews this year: 300-340
Outright acceptances: 65-70
Waitlist movement? Very often
Waitlist has NO order, it is a pool that the committee can choose from

Ouch. Not great odds, and that is with more interviews than they originally anticipated. I guess we will start to see what happens on Monday and if any of us get the call. Last year, three from sdn did on the first possible day.
