So for all of us on hold right now, can we expect to hear anything until March, when they release the waitlist? Or is it just silence between now and then?

I interviewed in December but I've forgotten about what the process looks like now that interviews are over.

I had SDN/school overload. One of them had to go until I regained my sanity.

I think there was going to be a point where they were going to make a wait list though. Wasn't it supposed to be mid-January? Anyone remember? So some of us will get rejected soon and others of us will get wait listed. Then after May 15 the waitlist begins to move.

There might be one more batch of acceptances this month, since someone in the last interview group posted that they were told that there were enough spots for each of them, so there should be <10 spots open assuming that a few people in that group were accepted.

Timeline from last two years based off the Mayo threads:

First week of March - creation of alternate list from the people on hold. ~100 people are rejected, ~100 are put on alternate list

Very little (if any) movement until...

Early May - Big alternate list movement

The amount of waitlist movement will be influence by the amount of acceptances they give out before formulating the alternate list. Two years ago, they gave out 48 initial acceptances for 42 spots. Last year, it was 47 initial acceptances for 42 spots. Each year, ~20 people came off the alternate list.

For everyone who does not want any more nitty gritty details of which to obsess over, look away now. For everyone who does want another week or so of nail biting and hair pulling, read on. You see, I broke down and called Gina. I'm concerned she might be starting to recognize me.

The executive committee is meeting this week and next. I could not get a hard number, but there will be over 42 total acceptances before March (which I had assumed based on the trend). I assume these next two meetings will decide these final acceptances.

The alternate list will be released around March 15. An email will be sent to people on the list with further instructions.

Hi,
I've never posted on SDN before, but this thread has helped me so much throughout this entire process and I just wanted to give back any information I had. I just saw Snuke's post so this may be useless, but I called Gina this morning and she told me the following:
1. Do not send new grades in until after you are invited to matriculate (ie those of us on hold should not update Mayo with grades)
2. The Executive committee still does meet, but recently she has not heard of any new appointments and that the class has been filled to her knowledge.
3. Waitlist should come out through email notification on March 15th so until then we can only hope for the best!

Might be... you have to write a letter of intent to get placed on the alternate list, so this might be their way of finding out who still wants to go to Mayo. I imagine some people at this point have settled on other schools and will decline to go on the alternate list.

I haven't heard anything yet, but I didn't see anything in my hold status email or hear anything on interview day about needing to write letters if you wished to remain under consideration. (And seriously, is *anyone* who interviews there not interested in Mayo?)

In the Alternate email it says to write a letter if you want to be on the list.

Rejected. I'm going to make a few comments.

I'm surprised that they rejected this fast -- I thought more people (including me) would be put on the wait / alternate list. Ultimately, I'm disappointed with this experience. The plane ticket to Mayo was incredibly expensive, Mayo did not seem like a lot of fun, and Rochester was just cold and small. Of course the school itself is phenomenal, but it didn't fit me. Good luck to anyone on the alternate list.

Edit: Not to nitpick, but the rejection letter was pretty poorly worded. It makes no mention about us individually as applicants, like "your application was strong, but not chosen" but rather "the committee was very impressed with the high quality of the applicant pool this year."

I also didn't receive an email or anything today. For those rejected, did you receive an email? Or are you all just assuming? If the latter, then I am probably in the rejection pile too. Mayo is a great school, so congrats to everyone who got accepted and congrats to everyone on the alternative list -- you still have a fighting chance!

Edit: Just saw EvilSponge's edit. This process is super crazy. All the medical schools could learn some manners. Especially since we spend so much money, time, and energy applying.

Just to comment before I get a rejection (to avoid the possible confound of sour grapes), I agree with you about the experience.

It's just too hassling/expensive to get to the little oasis known as Mayo. This fact is multiplied by the other fact that they have an amazingly disappointing acceptance rate given the amount of interviews they have. We are all qualified, nitpick more during the review process and interview only 200 people for the 80 eventual acceptances. 40% is much more reasonable than the wimpy ~22% they run with now.

My guess? They sent out a bunch of emails and then had to break for lunch. I expect my rejection email to arrive no later than 3:30 PST.

It is really surprising how many of us on SDN haven't heard anything yet from Mayo. I am kind of kicking myself for checking SDN today. I had a nice long streak of not looking on the site and was about to regain my sanity.

I regret coming to SDN today. If I did not log on, I would at least be ignorant to my soon to be rejection. Instead, I have to anxiously wait for it.

Is that what the letter of intent means...I was hoping that, in this case, it was more of a 'letter of continued interest' vs. people just withdrawing their app. I don't know if I'm ready to fully commit myself to any place without seeing financial aid information that will come out in march.
