2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The best thing about this whole process is that in like 55 days it will all be over and we will have finished our interviews and entered our rankings on the computer. At least there is an end date!

I applied to the General Outpatient rotation. I'm a little relieved that you heard from a different rotation as they could possibly still be making decisions about the General Outpatient rotation. Thanks for sharing the dates with me and congratulations!

i also applied to ICFH in the general outpatient rotation and have not heard anything

Here is a rejection that confused me today:

"Thank you for your application to the predoctoral psychology internship program at Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.

We have received 82 completed applications for the 2011-12 internship year. Unfortunately, we are able to make only four offers. I regret to inform you that, having carefully considered the highly competitive pool of applications, we have concluded that we will not be able to place you on our APPIC ranked list, specifically for the general track--111211.

I wish to emphasize that you meet all basic requirements for application to our program and have obvious strengths. Should we not fill our positions from our ranked list, we would be pleased to have you join us as an intern. In order to assist you in your search for an internship position, however, I felt that it was important to provide you with this information as soon as possible."

This rejection confused me. They state they will not place me on their APPIC ranked list. But also say that if they do not fill their positions from their ranked list, they'd be pleased for me to join them. How is that possible if they don't rank me? (I must be missing something 😕

Ya, that makes no sense.... The only other way you could match w/ them would be through clearinghouse (or w/e they are calling it now). I think someone is confused. Maybe you're better off w/o them?? lol

Just received an e-mail rejection from Minneapolis VA. Or, sorry, a notice that my application has not been "retained" for interview. They've sure got some interesting euphemisms... 🙂

I like this!! 👍

Just got notified about an interview for Saint Lukes Roosevelt-child track.

Congrats! Via phone or email?

Also:
Beth Israel called for an interview yesterday

AND

Pace sent me a completely unpersonalized rejection (Dear Applicant)

Thanks for that reminder!! This is a crazy-making process!!😀

Just got an email rejection to Didi Hirsch. They did put my name in the email though... okay, 15 more to go!

Thanks for the heads up! Does anyone know if they are interviewing everyone again this year? The email said I was "selected" to interview, but who knows if that means anything??😕

Just a word of caution. Last year, the VA in North Chicago interviewed every single applicant! (that's more than 100) Heard it was so impersonal, hurried, the interviewers were fatigued, and interviewees were not always likely to speak with someone they share rotation interests with. Heard you may not even meet the Training Director. How cruel for applicants that must travel.

Congrats on the interview! Was it a personalized or general email? I'm still waiting to hear from them....
When I was researching sites I noticed that they interviewed everyone last year but the years before were more selective. Maybe last year was a new TD or something? Definitely doesn't look like it they do it every year and since I haven't heard yet, then there is reason to think it was just a one time thing.

It was a general email. Good luck in hearing from them!

Wow. Very confusing! My guess is that they're referring to the off chance that both you and this site end up in the Clearinghouse/Phase II, they'd like you to consider them. No idea what else they might be referring to!

are you interviewing @ the med ctr or counseling center? it is COLD there! snowy and in the 20's. eeeeks! I'm heading up there after new years.

The counseling center. I lived in Albany for 5 years but I know it's WAY colder out there!

WOOOHOO...CALIFORNIA HERE I COME! Looks like i'll be spending 3 weeks interviewing in california and escaping the NYC winter blues (and my seasonal depression). I was literally going to buy a new winter coat---but this may be my last east coast winter!

Just got an invite from Northern California VA in Martinez. it was sent as a generic email with the 5 dates they posted on their brochure!!!

They could be referring to clearinghouse, although the email makes it sound as though they may simply be ranking all/most people who applied to their site? Someone else mentioned earlier in this thread that sites can indeed rank applicants that they haven't interviewed (although I'd imagine it may not be common), but I'm not sure if that's what this particular email is suggesting.

Just got an invite via email to Allegheny General Hospital in PA!

Rejection in the form of a personalized letter as an attachment...ouch!

Interview from Palo Alto VA via email. They say you can interview any time in December and January (no weekends or holidays). They also stress that phone interviews are OK.

With that, I'm done. I've heard from all 12, with a final tally of 8/12.

Good luck, everyone!

Seriously, these days i'm pretty sure i'm more stressed out then my clients (and more OCD about checking email then the most severe of the OCD cases). Maybe this is why they say "psychologists are crazy." I get it now. Its not that we are born this way...the process of becoming a psychologist can make the most grounded of us crazy! Sorta kidding???

Maybe our clients have it down. They drink, smoke, eat excessively, etc. to escape problems. I should develop one of these "coping strategies" since i've run out of good ones.

Congrats Mulitvariate...good luck on all of the interviews!

Wow, nice work! 3/4 is way ahead of the curve. Good luck with your interviews!! If you interview rate is any evidence, I'm sure you will do great.

wow, congrats on having heard from all of your sites! I bet that is a nice feeling!!!

Just got a generic rejection letter from The Children's Hospital - Denver. On a brighter note, got an interview offer to Institute of Living earlier this afternoon. 🙂

Congratulations! What a relief it must be to have heard back from all your sites and to have racked up so many interviews! :claps:

Thanks for all the words of support! Good luck to everyone out there. See you in the airport!

Congrats Sampaguita! I too was expecting a rejection so pleasantly surprised :highfive:

Congrats to you too!

I get so anxious when I get those emails though that I miss the instructions...this is the 4th time I sent a premature email to either the wrong person or without the requested information. I need to SLOW DOWN! It doesn't help that I don't have a smart phone either!

This is my first time posting here and I hate for it to be a complaint, but this whole business is seriously frustrating and unpredictable.

I applied to 18 sites nation-wide, mostly VAs and college counseling.

I have heard back from 4 sites. All rejections.

The anxiety of the wait to even know if I have a chance is extraordinary.
The whole process is irritating and I wish there were something better available.

So there. I complained. And I don't feel better. But it's good to know that I'm not alone in this.

Rejection from Mt. Washington, interview offer for Baylor College of Medicine (it's not the Texas Children's Track, but has a rotation there.)

Gangreen I hope I hear from Texas Children's too....Congrats on your interview!

I'm guessing you applied to the child/peds track at Baylor? I have an app in there as well, but for adult neuro. Haven't heard back yet from either them or Houston.

Berea Children's Home and Family Services sent a "dear applicant" rejection email. Boo. Now I'm starting to get nervous... 5 nos, 11 to go, no interviews yet... :scared:

That would be it - the peds track that is. Good luck with the adult track! The email was a relatively generic "dear applicant" attachment and was not track specific.

Heard back from Southwest Consortium (NM). Offered interview dates on Jan 19, and alternate on Jan 19?!! Typo - YIKES! Anyone clarify with them what the true alternate date is?

they offered the 12th and the alternate is the 19th. also the email didn't have the 3 attachments spoken about in the email:shrug:

I haven't heard yet, but I remember the brochure saying January 12. Congrats!

Hey, those coping strategies are only problematic when they are relied on exclusively, so I'd say it's adaptive to treat yourself to some comfort food and a big glass of wine.

I noticed a comment a while back regarding a site that was sending out interview invites before their deadline (they had a Dec 1st deadline), thus suggesting that there are doing some kind of rolling review of apps. How does that work exactly? Wouldn't this require that they have some sort of ratio in order to make sure they dont fill their interview quota before the deadline. Would this not put applicants who submit right at the deadline at some kind of disadvantage?

I was reminded of this because someone mentioned that they hadn't yet heard from the Biloxi VA, whose deadline actually isn;t till the 15th of Dec and I have yet to submit this one.

Sites do start reviewing once they have substantial numbers of applications, just to keep the process as much under control as possible. Some wait to close before sending any decisions; others don't because they have a good sense of who they are looking for and know a strong-enough candidate when they see one and may want to start filling interview slots or convey their enthusiasm for specific candidates. Each site will have it's own culture in this regard.

I do think there are disadvantages to waiting until the last minute since reviewers can get fatigued and are having to read more quickly and have a "context" to compare your application to that has developed from reading earlier ones. On the other hand, maybe there is some "recency" effect for coming in at the end. In any case, if it is done there is no good reason not to submit, I think, since you can avoid being in the last batch where reviewing can get rushed by the pressure of notification deadlines

If she had just several people to call as of roughly two weeks ago, I'm guessing I'm in the reject pile too 🙁 Good luck to you TjMc! Let me know if/when you hear from them (either positive or negative news) and I'll do the same. Snail mail takes about 3 days to get here from ATL so I'm guessing I'll know relatively soon *if* decisions had been made around Thanksgiving and letters are already starting to go out.

I wouldn't throw in the towel yet. The snail-mail reject came before the phone acceptance! I think they have until the 18th. Current interns in my program said Marcus was weird last year too. They said one person from a cohort of 7 got an acceptance really early, and then everyone else did on the last day to notify.

Wow...that's weird! But also encouraging 🙂 Thank you so much for the info!!! 👍

Phone call interview invite to La Rabida Children's Hospital today.

re: Southwest consortium

congrats!! I heard from them too 🙂 And freaked out when I saw 1/19 listed as OH and the alternate date (I thought this process has finally turned me mad!). And if you re-read the e-mail carefully, you will see this:

"We have received and reviewed your application for the Southwest Consortium Predoctoral Psychology Internship (SCPPI) for the year 2007-08."

WHAT???!! Did we travel back in time? Lol she must be a new admin asst. Poor girl! Must be so overwhelmed by all these interview invites and now her box is probably flooded by anxious psych students' emails 🙂 PS Where did you guys see the 1/12 date in the brochure? I can't find it!
