2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone:

Sort of went AWOL after not matching in phase I. Anyways, I'm over it and ready to move on

Got interviews upcoming (so far, hopefully more coming) from: Children's Hospital Oakland, Andrus Children's Center (Andrus said they were sending out emails later this week), Burea Children's and Wisconsin Consortium site.

Rejections from: Devereux Institute

Apparently, sites were innundated with applications for phase 2. 2 of the sites I will be interviewing at as well as a friend on internship at one site stated in the email or told me over the phone they many more applicants than they had from phase 1. Those are all from medium sized/solid, but not prestigious, APA sites. I can only imagine what sites like U Washington or Harvard got!

Good luck to everyone in phase 2 🙂

congrats to all those who received interviews in phase II. i still havent heard from anywhere and im getting a bit nervous.... 🙁 i also applied to oakland children's....🙁

They do have 3 openings, so I would think they are going to interview quite a few applicants. It was a phone invite, so I would think it could take some time for the site to contact everyone (I was on the phone for like 5 minutes). Also, the TD made the phone calls (not an administrator or secretary). So, I assume that the psychologist(s) have a very busy schedule, which could, I would think, force the psychologist to intermittently contact applicants (based on availability). This could, I would also think, prolong the time needed for the site to contact all applicants. So don't give up hope!!! 🙂

If you don't mind my asking, how did Devereux contact you? I applied there and haven't heard anything one way or another :xf:

This gives me a bit of hope as I applied there and haven't heard anything. When did they contact you?

thanks. that gives me a little hope 😉

The big boys are officially entering the game...just got an interview offer from Baylor. Mind is officially blown as there are other sites that are much less competitive that I'm am much better fit for that I've gotten presumed rejections from and now I have an interview at a highly competitive site that I'm not a good fit for (but would thoroughly enjoy the opportunity of course! I like them...just not sure why they like me!) Individualized e-mail, for those also waiting to hear from them.

From the site perspective...they are pressed too to attract top applicants, as they will need to work with this person for a year. You must have had something jump out that they thought would make you a good fit. Good luck!

Anyone hear from any Canadian sites yet? I'm hoping to hear from London, Ottawa Hospital, Kingston... I'd love to hear when others know!

I heard the carrier moose for the Canadian postal service were thinking about going on strike...something about having not being able to get home in time for Hockey Night. 😀

Do they still have a ridiculous supplemental application with 5-6 short answer questions? I remember seeing that (pre-electronic submission) and thinking, "really?!" FWIW I've heard good things about their training.

interview from U Kansas.

Congrats! Lawrence is the good ole heartland of the USA. Friendly, and the people are down to earth. My kind of place...

interview from U Kansas.

As a Kansan and U of Kansas psych undergrad alumn their program, the university, and the city are all amazing. One of my east coast friends got a interview for their grad program and almost didn't go interview because "it's in Kansas" - she totally apologized when she got back. 🙂

Lawrence, KS is a great town....and this is from a guy with an East Coast bias. They have some good microbrews, fun atmosphere, inexpensive living, etc.

Spent the first two years of undergrad at KU... Rock Chalk! I had to respond and agree with those who posted about Lawrence, KS. Such a great town!

Yes I agree - Lawrence, KS is totally awesome. I am a Kansan and did undergrad at KU, loved the psych dept, and loved people in general. I'd LOVE to have matched there, but didn't apply because I didn't want college counseling. But if there was a VA there I'd be all over it (and I know I'll be applying to the KC VA for post-doc)!!!

1st phone interview later today... so excited for the opportunity but noticing I am still not fully 'recovered' from the first match results. Anyone else experiencing this and if so, any suggestions? I think part of the anxiety I am feeling has to do with the pressure of doing well in the interview and matching this go round.

My advice about phone interviews is to treat them like an in person interview. Except you get notes!! 🙂 Make sure to have on nice clothes (no PJs!) and SMILE while talking because it can be heard through the phone.

Make a quick look guide for questions and points about how you fit with the site that you want to get in. If it's a cell phone make sure to be in a place that has great reception and if it all possible do it on a landline. Nothing more awkward than a dropped call or choppy reception.

Take a DEEP breath!! GOOD LUCK!

Gotta love the Lawrence spirit! It makes me all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it. 🙂 Big 12 Tourn starts today - Go Jayhawks!! 👍👍

Has anyone heard/or know anyone who has heard from Duke, Harvard, or ICFH?

Sorry but, go Irish!!

YAY Markro!!! Glad to see another Irish fan on here :luck::luck::luck:

Got an interview offer from Devereux today - seems to be a mass e-mail. Otherwise...crickets.

Thank you! It went really well 🙂

I have a phone interview on Friday! I am obsessively checking my email hoping for more interviews! Has anyone heard from the Maryland VA?

Got an interview offer (via phone) from Primary Children's Behavioral Health (Salt Lake City)! 🙂

EDIT: I believe it's listed as Primary Children's Medical Center on APPIC.

This month's issue of Grad Psych magazine has several articles aimed at recent internship applicants: one divided into advice for those who matched and those who didn't, one on the role of personality in the Match process, and another on the importance of finishing your dissertation before starting internship:

You know what....if defending ones dissertation is sooooo important to all TDs, then why don't we just make that a requirement to be eligible for the match. Thats one less variable people will have to worry about then. Evens out the playing field in that realm at least.

Many people can defend during their internship year, and it'd be a shame if they get bumped because they don't have everything done before the internship cycle. I wouldn't want people rushing or cutting down on the quality of their research because they are worried about extending their training....there is already enough of that pressure out there. With that being said, I'd STRONGLY encourage people to take the time to finish their dissertation than do internship. Even at an internship site with an "average" workload, you will be busy because of the post-doc cycle, adjusting to 40+ hr of clinical work, etc. Having a dissertation hanging over your head makes every day off a guilt trip.

Devereux, Primary Children's, Illinois School Psych... Wow, some strong sites definitely went to round 2 this year! Good luck to everyone going through--9/10 from my program matched in Phase I, and I have my fingers crossed for the 1/10 to find something awesome in Phase II.

blindchaos, I'm from SLC,and I LOVED it, as do my parents who still live there. It's an amazing, beautiful, and surprisingly metropolitan city and of course, great outdoors for both skiing and camping (southern Utah, mainly) . A former co-worker did her internship at Primary Children's a couple of years back--we weren't particularly close, so I don't have a ton of details, but from what I heard, the training was very solid, and she managed to secure a good post-doc. Congrats on the invite and good luck to you and all the other SDNers going through Phase II! :luck:

I was offered an interview at Kingston (Canadian site) yesterday- by phone.

Hello all,

Short-time lurker, first time poster. I was first introduced to SDN by a fellow student who is going through the internship process currently, so I haven't been a member all that long, but I've read every post for this year's process. It's looking pretty intimidating so I'm getting things underway now.

My question to everyone is, when setting up a spreadsheet to organize all the sites you might be interested in, are there particular categories or "domains" you grade each site on. So for instance, location, fit, research v. clinical training, odds of matching, having a connection to a supervisor, etc.

I'm trying to figure out which "domains" might be most helpful and if people just make a mental note or do some kind of idiosyncratic "grading system" (nothing is overkill for graduate students right?). Do folks have suggestions for what was helpful in narrowing down in this way?

Thanks 😀

PW

Here's to hoping for more good news today everyone!

At what point do you guys thing it would be acceptable to contact sites to inquire about the status of our applications? Seems like they might be really busy, but we are also running out of time to set up interviews for next week!

Just received an email rejection from Marcus Autism.
An interview offer at any site would be really great about now...

I just got the same rejection 🙁 At least we know now, right? 😳 Hang in there, mumption - there are still a lot of sites that haven't jumped in the game yet!

That's not necessary. They know the timeline and that this is important to all of us. Plus, we know they probably have a ton of apps. Better to leave them alone IMO.

After reading the article about those who didn't match...I say Bull****. This is APA propaganda. I'm sure if I waited 2 more years to apply for internship I could get a great one, but I am ready NOW. Hell, I could have waited 10 more years to start my PsyD and I bet I'd have so much more experience and wisdom, but that's ridiculous.

APA needs to manage this imbalance rather than try to sell me on why it could be a good thing.

-Rant over-

I agree, I definitely do not want to bother anyone... yet. I was just wondering at what point people think it would be acceptable to do so 🙂

The APPIC instructions for Phase II specifically noted that programs are not required to notify applicants of whether they will receive an interview or not. I wouldn't want to risk any last minute offers from sites, either. But just my take 🙂

Just to clarify, are you saying you would or would not want to contact sites? Not quite sure what you meant when you said "risk any last minute offers"...

Just to put some feelers out there, has anyone heard from any of these sites (offer or rejection)?

OR any rejections from the following? (I know at least some interview offers have gone out for both of these)
