2012-2013 Rays/Prelim Rejects Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Right there with you on Georgetown. All good though. I rather get that than silence.

UCLA rads rejection. Not the harbor program...didn't apply there.

49ers, mind telling us a little more about what they said? And maybe where you fall in the alphabet? I know some programs review their apps alphabetically by last name...

Are you from the Bay Area? Good luck against the Rams this weekend. Also hoping for the Texans to beat the Bears for you guys.

I couldn't upload the screenshot from my email due to dimensions not fitting on sdn. Here is their ERAS message copied and pasted:

Thank you for your interest in our Radiology Residency Training Program. The selection committee was impressed with your credentials and curriculum vitae. However, each year the number of interested candidates far exceeds the number of available positions. It was a difficult decision with so many qualified candidates, but we will not be able to extend to you an interview offer.
We wish you success in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Suh, M.D.
Director, Residency Training Program
Department of Radiology
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

I'm 99.9999% sure I didn't get it because I'm not from California and didn't convey ties to the state through my app (I have some relatives there, but bulk of them are in east coast including here in FL). I'll PM you my app details. I have nothing outstanding, but I think it's strong enough (I'm happy with my interview invites).

UCLA doesn't really care if you have ties to the state.

Me too, but it's the second time they rejected me, lol. I emailed them a few weeks ago asking my application status. Guess they wanted to really make sure today I got the message.

Did anyone hear back from Cook County Hospital? Couple people I know got invite but so far nothing for me. I know they are a low tier program, but at least they are in Chicago.

yeah, invite this last week. date not confirmed yet.

I wonder if they are a program who applied some reverse filters for step 1 score?!? There are quite a few people I know in Chicagoland area and only 2 of them got invites from cook who coincidentally happen to have <240 on step 1 while most of us who had >250 got silence from them..

It seems reasonable that programs, especially those with limited resources wouldn't want to waste time on candidates unlikely to rank them highly, for whatever reason. A super high step score is likely one of them, so is lack of geographical tie.

I would bet that if you showed interest in them specifically, you would get your invite. But I suspect you wouldn't want to go there anyways and won't.

Ah yes I should have clarified, it was a full rejection.

Ah thanks. I got a waitlist email from them, though I don't know why they bother. I'd probably end up on the bottom of the rank list with that anyway, even if they did offer an interview.

For any program that is not a "top" program, reverse filters MUST be applied given a finite amount of time to conduct interviews, or else they screw themselves. Let's say there are 5 programs in a city, with 5 spots per program. Let's then say that each program can't fit more than 20 candidates in their interview schedule within a given season, and that 30 candidates applied, of which ALL candidates applied to ALL 5 programs. If all 5 programs interview just the top 20 candidates that apply, then the bottom program will wind up completely unfilled. Meanwhile, 10 candidates will go unmatched, of which, at least 5 could have been spared the scramble and matched to that bottom program.

The above is a scenario of theoretical extremes, but the fundamental principle still holds: as long as applicants keep "over-applying" and applying to programs "below them", programs will end up with unfilled spots and therefore HAVE to apply "reverse filters" to protect themselves.

Has UCLA sent out all of their rejections so that only maybe and invites are left?

Cedars Sinai waitlist today. Anyone else get this? Wondering if they end up waitlisting everyone or if I have a chance of getting an invite later on.

Any word on NYU?

I haven't. Anything from Stanford for that matter? Their website says the week before Thanksgiving invites will go out. Since it's about 2PM over there, I suppose there is some time left.

Got Malinkrodt today. Surprising? Nah. I could get a bumper sticker saying "I got rejected from Malinkrodt".

At least you know? I'm still in no man's land

I got it today, but I didn't have the 250+ step 1, so wasn't a huge surprise. I wondered if my step 2 would carry me over, but oh well.

Anyone else notice that the malinkrodt rejection was the most positive rejection ever? Almost made me feel good. Lol.

I had a 260+, AOA, grew up in St. Louis where my family still lives and did undergrad at WashU. Really wanted to go there 🙁

This process sucks sometimes. Oh well.

especially the part where they say "we did not apply any electronic filters" lol!

? What? You didn't even get an invite to interview? Any idea why? I have a friend who matched there last year under 250, not AOA and marginal research. Hard to believe you didn't get offered an interview.

I bet them and MGH and CA programs have many people with less than 250 scores and no AOA who are there. This process is comical at best. It's very difficult to discern what goes on in a PD's head? they should just have a raffle ticket or something really.

Some places screen for a wide range of personalities. They try to gauge those personalities by one's application. Random, but that partially explains it.

NYU rads rejection. That was the last of the 38 programs I was waiting to hear from so looks like I'm done with this cycle. Pretty happy with the invites I have. Can't complain. 🙂

Edit: Was clearing my Eras message inbox and noticed the NYU rejection was sent through an AOL address they apparently use. I didn't know AOL was still in business, LOL!

Yes with heavy regional bias and brand name of applicant's institution.
Hopkins has to take their own kids. And so on...
Medicine is a weird field that has such a weird selection process.

Anyone else get two messages from mass general? 1st was rejection and 15 minutes later there was a wait list email.

Nope, "only" one rejection letter for me from MGH, lol.

UNC rads rejection just now btw.
