2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know anything about Temple University Consortium? Their APPIC directory listing was updated 10/28 but their website has been taken down for revisions. It says that an updated version will be posted "soon." What an awful time to revamp the program... Just want to get these last few in and be done with it!

And, like some other posters, I have received a few confirmation emails from sites indicating that they have my completed application and thanking me for interest in the program. One went so far as to explain the review process and the expected timeline for interview notifications, and the other two were much less detailed. It did make my heart skip a beat to see them appear in my inbox, though!

On another note, one of my classmates received an interview invite today at UCSF Child and Adolescent Services. This seems very early!! 😛

Nice, I considered applying for the multicultural focus but decided against it b/c even though they are EBT, they use psychodynamic, and I have no interest at all in that.

Submitted my application to Mount Washington today, 10 days ahead of time! woo-hoo. I've got 3 sites left to finish (11/15, 11/18, and 12/1 due date respectively). I have not received any e-mail notification, but at this point, I'm not worried at all about it.

Yes, how exciting! I am losing stream... still have a few apps to submit due 11/15. But, like a few others, I got my first email this morning confirming receipt of my application. Here we go...😳

Wow! An interview invite already - this is early! I'm not done applying yet (20 down, 7 to go).

Last year there was something like an Interview Invites and Rejection Topic that was really helpful. I can't remember exactly how it was formatted but it was always up-to-date with sites that had offered interviews and sites that had sent out rejection emails. It's not an exact science, but it did allow people to have an educated guess about where they stood.

Does that sound like something people would like to do this go round?

Yes 🙂

I believe last year, the notifications list (i.e., interview offers and rejections) was kept on the first post in the APPIC thread. Thus, if the individual who started this year's thread (I believe it was PerhapsMaybeOK?) would want to keep up with that, it could be a very useful resource.

So, half of my sites listed their interview dates and half did not. I'm assuming these things work themselves out, but it's definitely making me anxious wondering about possible conflicts and how best to schedule those interviews I'm fortunate enough to receive. I'm trying to just have faith that it will work out somehow. Some of my sites asked me to identify preferred dates to interview - anyone know if that means anything at all (like they might save you a space on your first preferred date) or if it is still just a free-for-all, first-come-first-served? If the latter, what's the point of listing a preference?

It was my experience last year, and the experience of many of my peers, that sites who offer multiple interview slots are very understanding and willing to shift around interview slots when applicants received interviews at sites that were not as flexible. I had to change one of my interviews and there were no questions asked, they were very nice and easy to talk to about it. Just try to imagine your favorite supervisors... a lot of training sites have people you will like just as much as them! Nice, easy going, and eager to provide great opportunities for junior psychologists!

hi all!! this will be my second year applying (i didnt match last year 🙁). i have been a silent follower of this thread and figured it is time to join the fun!! good luck :luck: everyone and i look forward to hearing/reading all the updates!!!

Hey everyone!

I got an invite for a phone interview from James Madison University! I was excited for a second and then tried to bring it back down because I realize this isn't the "official" interview..more like an inbetween step between applications and actual interviews, I guess.

Does anybody know about these things work/what I should expect/be prepared to talk about? I don't know if everyone gets a phone interview and then they weed out applicants that way or if only some people get phone interviews and then only some of those people get actual invites..

Well congrats on the preliminary interview! I have no idea what to expect. I've never heard of such a thing. 😕 Perhaps they are fairly selective about who they want to/can bring to their site for interviews, so they screen first. Could mean that if they bring you in for an interview there's a higher likelihood you'll get ranked...?

Yay, welcome. It's a bunch of applicants' second time here, myself included. Good luck!

I'm a second-timer too! Don't think I mentioned that before.

TuTu - congrats on the pre-interview interview or whatever you want to call it! It makes a lot more sense (to me at least) to screen candidates by phone and then invite only the top applicants to in-person interviews, rather than 10-15 applicants per position....

Second timer here as well... let's get this party started!

Congrats, TuTu! Nice way for the SDNers to start - I think yours is the first news from actual posters on the board!

Got this invitation today too, so I looked at the data posted on APPIC. JMU only invites a very few number of people to the in-person interview (14 last year), so it makes a lot of sense that they would do a pre-screen in order to decide who to invite. It would be difficult to pre-screen all the applicants, though, so I've decided to assume we've made it past an initial cut 🙂.

hey there! It's been awhile.

got an email for an interview from Rush University Medical Center for the Neuropsychology track yesterday.

Fingers crossed!

Congrats on the interviews! It's exciting to see people getting interviews already :woot:

congrats to everyone who already got interviews! how exciting. im a second timer as well. wish me luck... lol:xf:

Congrats! Was the email personalized or did it seem like it was sent out to all who were invited?

Hello everyone, I'm a long time reader, first time poster.

I just wanted to share that I received an email intivation from the University of Florida BMed track. It looked like a mass email. It's my first invite - so excited! I hope others who applied there got good news as well!

Congratulations to ya. I remember UF being an early-notifier last year as well (like you, they were my first offer), so I'm guessing this is a trend for them.

Any thoughts/previous experience/gossip on University of Wisconsin Med Center internship?

Is Perhapsmaybeok going to update his OP to include these invites? Or maybe 2nd poster? I'm fine with doing it if people PM me, I can just post on this thread everytime it is updated, but I think it should be visible on the first thread.

Congrats! I think someone in my program got an interview there too - she said University of Florida Health Science Center. Not sure which track, though.

I got a voice mail from a site today to let me know I mismarked something on my supplemental form. It started off so promising - "This is so-and-so from such-and-such internship program..." Getting excited! 😛

People will definitely appreciate you taking your time doing this! I'd suggest asking for the dates the interviews/rejections were made.

Thanks 🙂 I definitely remember how up & down this process can be from last year; I was just hoping this time around things would start on an up note.

Cervello--my first notification last year was an interview offer, and I didn't end up matching (or getting too many more interviews). maybe it's better to start out with a rejection--as someone else said it can only get better!
Fingers crossed the 2nd time around will be better for all of us!

I got an interview from University of Florida neuropsychology track and rejection from Rush University Medical center. Hopefully the good news will continue. 😉

Good evening! Another second-timer here, almost done with all 16 of my apps this go-round and trying to stay sane!

Two friends in my program received invites from the Rochester BOP on Tuesday. I believe it was a mass email, but I'm not sure.

Gotten a few confirmation emails this week (which helped with my anxiety of knowing sites got my app) but I know I wouldn't hear about interviews till mid Dec. Congrats to all who have received interviews so far!

I have not heard a peep from any of my 15 sites and am anxiously (impatiently) waiting to start hearing from them. In the meantime, I am working on my dissertation...

Do you guys feel comfortable sharing the names of sites from whom you've received confirmation emails?

The only one I think I received was from Kennedy Krieger.

I received one confirmation email and it was from University of Arizona

I applied to 22 places and only received one confirmation...from the University of Wisconsin (Madison)

I received confirmation emails from CSU Long Beach and The Guidance Center

Thanks, that helps a lot. I applied to 13 places, and I have gotten no confirmations. I will post if I get anything.

I know one person who got a rejection notice from Rush U, but others have already posted on that. This same person will likely get a good number of interview offers, so we'll see.

So, does anyone have a sense of the average "return on investment" for applications to interviews? I have heard a statistic of approximately 40% from previous years' applicants in my program (again, on average), anyone else hear anything? I have yet to hear of anyone who was invited for an interview every single place they applied, but maybe it does happen on occasion.
