I'm waiting on Notre Dame too...I thought we might have heard back today (technically yesterday) bc they notified people on 12/6 last yr.

Oh one of my friends matched there two years ago and loved it there! It's a good place to be.
 
Also got an invite to University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital's Adult Medicine and Rehabilitation Track. Requested I call them on Wednesday (12/11/13) to schedule an interview. SOOOOOOOOOOOO excited about this one; may possibly be my #1 choice! 😍

Did anybody that applied there receive interviews to multiple tracks or just to one? They asked us to pick up to four tracks and note it in the cover letter, but I only heard from that one track (and the Neuro Hispanic ranked higher on my list). If you have gotten interviews to multiple tracks, were they all listed in the same email or did it come in separate emails?
 
NYU Langone personalized, to the point rejection. Received today, 12/7/13.
 
What an insane process! I'm waiting to hear on 12 sites, with 2 interviews and 2 (very kind) rejections. So the only speculating I can do about this process is hoping that perhaps they are interviewing out-of-towners first since all my sites are local to where I reside. But, again, my speculation helps me perserve my 'ego-strength' because I still feel like a strong applicant (based on where my two interviews are). :thinking:

And on top of it all my husband said I haven't been 'fun' to be around....geez. Thank goodness my dissertation committee said the exact opposite! Now, back to playing legos with my kids on this delightful Saturday morning...😎

Haha, my husband's been rather aggravated with me lately. He says that I'm obsessing over this too much.

I'm actually only waiting on seven more sites, and only two haven't invitations yet that I know of. But there's one (that supposedly notified people) that I wish that would just reject me already so I can make travel plans for my other interviews.
 
Just to add another piece of data, I haven't heard from the following sites either:

McGuire VA (despite listed December 6 notification)
Philly VA
Southeastern Louisiana VA
 
My dissertation is all set to go for data collection. I am just waiting on IRB approval! It has been four weeks and they are going really slow at my school! Somewhat said something about being "definitely maybes" in this process....so I decided to watching "definitely, maybe" this morning...that movie with Ryan Reynolds. Trying really hard to take a break from checking my email 🙂

I'm sorry, that is rough. 🙁 I am sure that I have been driving my husband crazy, all I do is talk about internship! Congrats on your two interviews, I'm sure you'll get many more interviews next week. Enjoy playing legos with your kids. 🙂

I totally agree. It looks like a solid training program with a lot of psychologists on staff. I bet they'll end up being as competitive as every other east coast VA. It was encouraging that they added two spots over last year, almost as if they've already anticipated the increased interest in their site.

You know when you think about it … only those of us that are actually in this crazy process can really understand and relate to the stress and difficulty we feel at this moment. Family members, spouses, significant others can't imagine the highs and lows that we go through - so supportive care from others that are in this boat together is impt - reach out to cohort members, continue the reinforcement when others have success and support each other when the disappointments occur - all part of the process we will one day look back on … best of luck to all … we have accomplished so much to even get to this point … we will get through it … a big week ahead - best wishes to all

Received a personalized email invitation (12/7) for an interview with the Dwight D. Eisenhower VAMC (in Leavenworth, KS). Interview dates are Jan. 3rd and Jan. 10th.
 
Anyone hear from Montefiore/Albert Einstein? Expecting a rejection on this one, but just wondering 🙂

Has anyone heard this idea that the application to interview ratio is more important with regards to matching than number of interviews received? Is there any evidence supporting that?

EXACTLY THIS! Thanks for posting it. I've been sharing with my Mom that peeps in my family understand medical school (since we have some MDs in my family) but no one except one of my cousins (& she has a PhD in biology, where there was no internship, just dissertation) understands this PhD hell. And my husband also asked me to host the holidays for our extended family...if not this year, than next. :wtf:But, that's part of a union...negotiating your significant other's agenda, too. Thank goodness for SDN. You all (or the folks back then) were kind & supportive during the entire doctoral application process and I feel like we have a good community here right now that will get us through these final stages.:horns:Can't wait to see different people posting "Defended!" soon after we all post "Matched!" (Wishful & magical thinking, but who said magical thinking is bad all the time!?!)

I haven't heard a peep out of them but, also expecting a rejection since I heard that they mostly interview CBT-heavy folks (which I am not presently). Kind of ironic since their sister school (Yeshiva) is very psychodynamic (but they seem to integrate the training well).

Like, your chances of matching are better predicted by the number of interviews you get out of the number of applications submitted (say, getting 6 interviews out of 16 applications versus 6 interviews out of 22 applications), than they are by the number of interviews you received in general.

I've only heard it and don't know if there's any truth behind it. Thoughts?

I have never heard that... it is really the number of interviews that matter. I don't have a copy of the stats, but I have heard that once you hit 9 interviews, you have at least a 90% chance of matching.

Interesting....so this would suggest someone who applied to 5 sites and received 5 interviews VS someone who applied to 12 sites and received 8 interviews? Never heard of this...I was just told for the most part that people who receive 7-9 interviews have a higher rate of matching....I guess the assumption that they applied to 12-15 sites?

That's what I heard too....shoot for 7-8 interviews!

According to APPIC's 2011 survey, the respondents who had 7-9 interviews had a 92% match rate (and it kept increasing as the number of interviews increased). Is that what you mean or is there other data?

I also found this from an article (Callahan et al., 2009 - DOI:10.1002/jclp.20664)

The third block comprised only the number of applications submitted, which accounted for 0.4% of the variance in outcome. As indicated, the raw number of applications did not contribute to the likelihood of matching either. Finally, block four was entered and comprised the number of offers to interview. This block accounted for 20.5% of the variance in match outcome, with the total model then accounting for 27.2% of the variance in match. As shown in Table 1, each additional interview increased the likelihood of matching by 1.529"

Basically, even when they controlled for number of apps submitted, number of interviews received still was a significant predictor of matching.

Sorry guys, when I feel anxious I tend to hit up research 😉 Although these stats indicate I need two more interviews, shoot!

Honestly, I doubt this really means much. So much of your application to interview ratio depends on how accurately you gauged your competitiveness as an applicant and your match to different types of internship programs. For example, I suspect I'm not a very competitive applicant to children's hospitals, but I am competitive in academic medical centers-- if I added more children's hospitals to my list, it would harm my "ratio" even if I had exactly the same number of interviews to academic medical centers. I think the total number of interviews means a lot more than the application/interview ratio.
 
As others have stated, I think what is most important is total number of interviews. However, an important question -- relative to the ratio of interviews -- is the reason for a high or low ratio. A lower ratio could mean either that one is less competitive or simply that one was less successful in applying to good matches. Furthermore, the meaning of a ratio fluctuates depending on how many sites were applied to. If I was gambling on whether candidates match, I'd certainly put my money on someone with a 5:5 ratio compared to a 5:25 ratio.

Of course, we must remember that this doesn't mean that your odds (or mine) will increase by x amount for each additional interview.
 
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the ratio explains more of the variance in the whole matching equation than the raw number of interviews, at least after a minimum number of interviews has been achieved. As has been mentioned, there can be a variety of reasons for a high vs. low ratio, although it could be the case that those who gauge their fit with and competitiveness at sites better end up being more likely to match in the end. What also likely factors into the situation would be the reason for submitting high vs. low numbers of applications (e.g., the average person who submits 10 or 15 apps may look very different from the average person who submits 25 or 30 apps, regardless of how good they are at gauging compatibility with particular sites).

In the end, though, thinking about all these things probably won't end up doing anything other than making you even more anxious than you already are. I'd say that if you want to come back after internship is finished and start trying to examine these things, go for it. But right now, just realize that you've done what you can do, and then focus on rocking the interviews you receive to the best of your ability.

Yup, of course. It's so tempting to cling to stats during this nerve-wracking process, but really there's no way to predict matching or not.
 
Another thing to keep in mind is that there is nothing magical about number of interviews and whether someone matches. Someone who interviews at 15 sites but is ranked near the bottom at every one of them is less likely to match than someone who interviews at 1 site and ranks very high for that one site. You don't get extra points for more interviews, you simply get extra chances, and with extra chances, the sheer odds of ranking in an acceptable range for at least one site goes up.
 
Btw, I just want to take this opportunity to say that I really am so grateful to be sharing this process with all of you. My DCT suggested that I avoid reading the internet during this time, but I actually feel like I'd be going more insane if I were on my own, just waiting to hear back. I'm the only one left in my cohort so I don't really have that option for support this year.

Yes, the application/interview ratio alone can't account for factors like "good gauge of fit" and I am not sure how it would account for wide variations in numbers of applications submitted. (Stats are not my strength in any case)...But it IS important to keep in mind as you tolerate this distressing process, that some candidates get one interview and match. (Rare I am sure but not unheard of...) And others get 8 or 9 and don't. (But most will). So many factors that can enter into ranking are not well reflected in simple apps/interview ratio. (eg: progress on dissertation may become a differentiating factor after the interview relative to other candidates in the cohort). While it is tempting to try to be able to predict the system it is not the kind of system that cooperates with metrics very exactly. More like weather than physics.

I agree. This has been a great support for me! My cohort has been supportive and we have been pretty open (sharing interview invites and rejections) and most of us have overlaps on places. I am even sharing a room and driving together with one of my cohort members to an interview as we both got an invite and are interviewing on the same day. So we can split cost of the interview. But I am thankful for the people here. It has been great hearing everyone's input and just being able to share our experiences.

I haven't heard, but have my fingers and toes crossed because it is one of my top choices; but I am a bit nervous because from looking at the website, most of the interns come from local schools.
 
Interview at UNC School of Medicine , 12/7/13, personalized. I had no idea this was coming - on a Saturday, no less!

Interview dates are January 14, 15, 22, and 23rd. We were asked to rank preferred interview dates at application submission, and the site has promised to attempt to match people to their top or second choice.
