2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone received a rejection from Nassau or IOL? I'm sure I'm not getting an interview but it'd be nice to just get the rejection over with and focus on the interview I have.

In the same boat as you with Nassau-expecting the rejection but still nothing has been sent

I'm getting close to doing the same.
Same here... and both of my remaining sites have sent out invites and rejections. Gonna try to hold out until tomorrow but totally agree this is getting tedious, if not obnoxious! Every additional day I wait to book flights, trains, etc. the prices go up!

Rejection:
Wyoming State Hospital
mass e-mail
received 12/16/13

To those who applied to Alaska VA: I emailed the TD and he said the date on the APPIC directory was incorrect. Expect notification on January 2.

haha jk! i likely will tomorrow morning if i dont hear anything today

Has anyone heard from Georgia State Univ Counseling Counseling and Testing Center? Their notification date was listed as today, and I didn't see anything on the Master list here.

Has anyone heard anything from Mt Sinai adolescent? Seems to be nothing but silence from them. 🙁

Has anyone received a rejection from ApsenPointe? I know they sent out invites is a somewhat staggered fashion.

has anyone heard from South Arkansas or Madison County??

Got an email Sunday letting me know notification was postponed a week.

****Correction. The email I received was not the adolescent track. Apologies.

I took the advice that it was OK to email the morning after deadline. I had two sites unaccounted for - one site with the Dec 15 notification date, the other had that had the interview notification blank - I emailed them both expecting quick rejections. The Dec 15 site responded very quickly and stated my rejection must not have come through because I should have received it much earlier (thanks for that!). The second site, (San Jose State UCC) surprising because I think they conducted interviews Nov 26, said they were still reviewing some applications and I would be notified by the end of the week if I was NO LONGER under consideration. Confusing, but not the quick rejection I was expecting. Neither site seemed bothered or irritated by my following up at all.

Just want to reiterate the importance of not scheduling your top choice as a first interview. My first interview was so-so but they have gotten better with each site. It's so much easier to be yourself if you're not fumbling over how to explain an answer.

Also- remember to always have a good comeback. Example: If someone was to insult your overeating of seafood during lunch by saying, "The ocean called and they're running out of shrimp!", you might say.."oh yeah?! Well the jerk-store called and they're running out of you!" That ones good but also risky as it may be countered with, "Well you're their best seller!" The counter to that counter is not known.

Agree with this! Had my first interview today, and while I think it went well overall, I didn't feel like my answers were as articulate as they could have been, I think (hope) they will be much better when I have my second interview this Friday. I did have my mock interview with my DCT last week, which helped tremendously – I am sure today would have been a lot bumpier had I not had that. However, I'm still continuing to practice answers to questions I know I will get asked by pretending my cat is the interviewer. 🙂

And luckily, nobody insulted me during lunch at the interview today. 😉

Still waiting for the confirmation... I wonder how long it will be to hear. I need to book my flights soon.
yeah I still haven't heard as well, hope it is soon as I don't want to be holding both dates in case one of my other interviews that are up in the air want one of the dates I'm holding.

A little nerve racking to hear this, since my first interview is for my top site… I'm writing out potential answers to potential questions and am hoping that the "fit" will shine through…

To counter this, in my experience, I am most prepared and on the ball for my first interview. For example, the grad program I am at now is the first interview I went on and definitely the one where I felt I "shined" (shone?) the most.

I think it's safe to say that it's going to vary by person. I could have been more fluid with my answers during my first interview. However, I am also a very anxious person in these types of situations. A little practice always helps me; however, if you THRIVE under that type of pressure then you probably would have no problem.

Just practice saying those answers out loud, a lot, it really helps. Especially focus on the obvious things you expect to get asked. Like, "why do you want to intern at X site?" Obviously, all sites are different, but I was surprised at just how much this was brought up by pretty much everybody I spoke with today (e.g., staff psychologist, TD, intern). And have lots of questions prepared to ask the interviewers and the interns.

I find it difficult at times to ask a lot of intelligent questions on interviews, possibly because the nitty-gritty's of a site often make sense after you start... I feel like I often did so much reading about a site that it was hard to ask detail questions about the specifics of rotations, etc... Does anyone else have this problem?

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why I am making sure I have lots of questions ready. Because there is a good chance that many of these questions will quickly become non applicable. When an intern is telling you all about the site, it seems silly to ask, "what is a typical day like for you here?" I think questions like "what influenced you to select site X?" are better. Or when talking to a TD, asking about the rotations is not good, because you should already know that from the brochure. Maybe something like, "what is the relationship between psychology and the other disciplines here?" would be better. I am definitely not saying that these are excellent examples of questions to ask. I am definitely interested in what others think re: questions that are good to ask at interviews.

I felt my first interview -- for one of my top sites (and for which I had no control) -- went quite well. I was not as sharp as I should have been for one question, but I was able to correct it with no harm done, I think. The hardest question I got was to recount an experience in which I had a conflict with a supervisor or coworker and what I did about it.

If you don't mind could you share if Mount Sinai Adolescent was mass or personalized? They're the last site I'm waiting on (other than one with a 12/30 date).

Dear Internship Site:

I have completed my review of your rejection. Unfortunately, I am not able to accept your rejection of my application at this time. This year, I received a higher volume of rejections than anticipated, many from sites with prestigious qualifications. As such, I am not able to accept all rejections. I will be attending an interview with your site on January 6, 2014 at 2:00PM. I appreciate the time you took in putting together my rejection and am sorry I will not be able to accept it.

Sincerely,
XXXXXXX

Quick q about asking questions on internships. I'm very much a person who needs to write things down (short-term memory is not the greatest). Does it look odd to take notes during interviews or to refer to my notes during asking questions? If it's anything like grad school interviews, someone may say something during the day that makes me think of another question later....

How did you answer that question? I feel like I 1) must be super fortunate because I can't recall too many "conflicts" per se with coworkers or supervisors and 2) I'm afraid if I did pick something, I'd be worried it wouldn't show my best qualities/put me in the best "light" (not that I have raging interpersonal problems, but I have worked with a few folks who were "a few crayons short of a full box" if you get my drift! How I dealt with them might be a bit different than how I might handle things in an AMC).
