2013-2014 APPIC (internship) Phase II

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have my last interview this morning but also have a horrible stomach bug. I hope I can make through the interview without having any digestive issues and that I sound like I have energy as I have none right now.

I still have sites that I have not heard from, but I already submitted my rank.
I just submitted my rank order too, but I can't stop willing my phone to ring. I keep fantasizing about Brown calling with an on the spot interview. Also daydreaming (having a nightmare) about matching with any place lower than my first choice.

Good luck - they have been so short - you can do it!!

I think we all have the same daydream. It would be nice to get another interview just to have another place...just in case. At this point, we did the best we can and it is out of our hands. We need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I emailed them Wednesday of last week and I received my rejection letter yesterday. They also bolded and highlighted criteria I do not meet for their internship and why I should not have applied. It was actually quite rude
I could understand them making a broader statement about how they had a lot of applications from very qualified people and even highlighting the requirements generally, but to take the time to highlight where you fell short seems mean.

Aww, I'm so sorry. That is so unfortunate. It may be a good opportunity though, to say something like, "Please excuse my voice. I am feeling very sick but I was so excited to speak with you about this internship that I didn't want to cancel."

Feel better!!

that's terrible. I guess they are still working on my rejection letter.

Interview went well and got to talk about cats!!! You know you are in good company when you are both cat people! (Cats seems like a reoccurring thing on this thread). Now back to sleep

Anyone who was "interviewed" AKA cold-called by Bronx who could shine some light on this? I emailed the TD with questions. Never responded. Today I checked in and received one-word answers, no greeting, no signature. Anyone else have a similar experience? I am trying not to read into this too much, but....what the?

Oh man, that sounds off-putting! Some of the negative experiences I've been reading about on here make me think that it makes a lot of sense that some of these sites found themselves in Phase 2! I had one negative phone call myself where the TD made me feel stupid for asking some of my questions even though there was only limited information available on the website... At another I was given one time slot for my interview, which I already had an interview, and then given another time that was half an hour before my next interview. They called 15 minutes late so we only had a few minutes--hard to believe that won't impact my chances, which is a bummer since that was my top choice!

Just finished my last interview today though and SO happy that part is over! Now just trying to figure out how I want to order some of my sites... The middle of the pack is tricky!

Wishing everyone on here GREAT luck on the 24th--half of my hopes for matching at this point are just so I don't have to do this stupid process anymore!

seems a bit rude since they should be trying to attract you to the site, however they could just be busy. I guess it boils down to how you felt about the site overall.

Cats are adorable, but lawnmowers and leaf blowers are not. It seems like all of my neighbors have decided to choose today to break out the loud machines for the first time this spring. They better shut up before my interview!

How many sites are you guys raking? Last year the average number for both matched and unmatched was between 4-5.

Four for me. Could you please direct me where that info is? I had a hard time find # of interview stats for phase II - thanks!!!!!

3... Unless I hear from Brown and then I'll rank 4 😵

Haha, yes! I had a skype interview today and told them that my cats might be around. They asked to see them 🙂 it's a nice way to start the interview. :cat:

I'm sure with 9 interviews you will be okay!!

Luckily, next week is my spring break so I am going to try to not be focused on psychology and focus on basketball!

Awesome!! Have a wonderful and relaxing spring break! Sounds like just the ticket to make the time pass quickly till Match Day Take 2!

I'll be ranking 3, unless by some miracle another one comes my way. Wishing everyone the best with ranking!

I'll be ranking four sites as well...still would be ecstatic to have just one more interview to get over that 4.8 average!

Keep in mind that was last year's average; this year's could be completely different.

Is anyone else having anxiety about having to move? Some of my sites are closer to my partner (who I currently live with) and family than others, and I know it is only for a year and it is better to match and not have to go through this whole messy process again next year, but I feel sad about having to give up our current place (there is no way my partner could pay the entire rent himself for a year) and move for a year only to move again. I guess that is just the nature of this field for most people.

YES! I like where I live, my husband has a good job, and I'd have to go 3000 miles to any of the places I interviewed. It's a huge decision. And I'm feeling conflicted because my top choice is in a really different kind of place from where I currently live (rural Florida versus SF bay area). I guess there are worse problems to have but it feels really huge right now.

Just wanted to mention, as a current intern, that some of the experiences above may have alternative explanations that aren't about you, and aren't about the site being terrible. Phase II puts a tremendous tax on the time of psychologists at a site-- ESPECIALLY IF THEY CARE! The more they care about getting to know each intern and being thoughtful, the more time they have to spend thinking. This can impact interviews running right to the hour, or running over (which is terrible for sites interviewing all day)... then the staff still need to eat, use the restroom... Plus, there may be actual issues with the clients that they are seeing, which could pull them from an interview or make an interview start late. Additionally, sending quick emails may seem curt, but may be the staff's effort to respond in the midst of these time crunches (and some may not be able to respond based on sheer time during the day...)

I know this is stressful for everyone in Phase II (been there), but I encourage you to be careful to assume that this means that these sites are rude, not being considerate of you, or have problems in how they train. What you may be getting glimpses of is exactly the opposite.

This is a really great point, and I want to thank you for writing this. I also wanted to comment to some of the people expressing some anxiety over the replies they've been receiving or not receiving from certain sites. While a curt or absent reply of course may NOT relate to the quality of the internship program, sometimes that along with some of the other feedback you can read about on this thread should clue you in to how a program functions and change your mind about how much you should desire them. Arguably, MOST internship program staff have to deal with crisis situations, bathroom breaks, eating, etc. You still have the job responsibility to schedule and interview internship applicants and to not call people early, reply with a cold email, or generate some of the horror stories I've heard from particular sites from this past January. Attempting to interview 40 people in 1 hour, or cold calling people when they are likely WITH CLIENTS THEMSELVES is not appropriate or professional, and I don't care how prestigious or personally nice your staff is. (Also, interviewing hundreds and hundreds of people for just a few minutes and STILL having slots open for Phase II clearly says to me that applications are NOT being read carefully for "fit," rather the site is using a cattle call method - this shouldn't be Tindr, people.)

For anyone who's sad that a site hasn't treated you the way you want - you probably don't want to work there! Save your energy for the people who take time to write decent emails, respect your schedule, and provide you with the treatment that likely translates to how they coordinate their client care. If you don't match at "FU Program 2014," then you're probably better off waiting until you can match next year at a program that will LOVE to have you. It's just one year, and there are plenty of us in the same boat willing to grab a drink/laugh at confessionsofabrokegradstudent/procrastinate on our dissertations/laugh at the whole thing and comiserate.

Best of luck to everyone for the 24th!

We're trying to figure out the work situation for him. If there are jobs out there then yes. If not, the stipends they offer there wouldn't be enough to support the both of us. But we're not into the idea of living on opposite sides of the country for a year. So we're spending a bunch of time this weekend figuring, or trying to figure, things out. What's your plan? Will your partner move with you?

Sounds like we're in a similar boat. My partner has a good job that he has been at for years and I am trying to get him to ask his boss if he could work remotely for a year, but he seems to think his boss will say no. It is a tough situation because if I end up reapplying for internship next year, there is no guarantee that I will match anywhere closer, so I feel like I should rank all of my options. If I end up moving (and he ends up staying), I would like to keep our current apartment, but there is no way he could afford it on his own, and there is also no guarantee that I would find a postdoc or job in this area. This process is so stressful, and I feel quite resentful of some friends who were able to not have to move for grad school or internship. I do not seem to have that kind of luck.

I do appreciate this reminder to think about the situations both parties are in--with are admittedly both stressful and unfortunate in terms of taking up a lot of time out of already busy schedules! In some cases things like disruptions in schedules cannot be avoided, and I would like to believe that for both parties, if something unavoidable happened there would be forgiveness and understanding, and certainly I do not hold it against sites who were respectful and professional even as things came up--like the TD that could not be reached for the first 10-15 minutes of our appointment but made sure it was still an OK time to talk once we finally connected.

That said, I think what I sometimes find difficult about this situation is that applicants are expected to remain professional and courteous in all of their interactions with training sites, or else they would almost certainly be removed from consideration. I do not always feel that training sites are held to this same standard. When given a single time slot for my interview I made it work despite having back to back commitments (no bathroom break for me!) and that was fine with me, but just as I would end a session with a client in time for my next one, I think it is the professional thing to do in this kind of interview situation is to manage time so that you are able to stay within 5 or so minutes of the appointments that applicants and training sites have fit into hectic schedules. I have also been accused of being polite to a fault sometimes, but I just don't feel it is appropriate to be rude or discourteous to an applicant either by phone or e-mail--it doesn't take that much more time to jot a quick one or two sentence note instead of a one word response. I would never respond to one of my students that way, for example!

I know that for some waiting a year is not a possibility. But I think it is also important to keep that option, if it is in anyway an option, on the table if ALL of your Phase II options are problematic. This board elsewhere has many accounts of students who waited a year and had an entirely different experience the second time in many regards, including getting an ideal match. (You can also find stories where that didn't work but it is still important to keep the whole dialectic in the decision process.).

Having a year to complete the dissertation and perhaps work in a clinical setting (for pay, not necessarily for hours...or to accrue hours in a specific technique/population)-can relieve financial stress or open doors that were not open this year and give you recovery time as well as allow you to stay with a partner and then go to internship without the burden of the dissertation to complete. If Phase II has turned out to be an entirely aversive experience, you can withdraw and let this ordeal go.

PsyDNYC and Butmewait-

Great points, that speak to the complicating factors involved in all of this! All of the unknowns really amp up the stress for all involved, which is such a shame. Being on this end, I have such a deep respect for the training committee at my site, who I perceive as extremely invested in providing the best training they can, as much as they can muster under all of the constraints and competing demands. It is very hard that psychologists and sites can have "off" days or moments, but applicants are in some ways expected not to (as this could impact their being considered at a site). These snapshots of a person are in some ways unfair... especially when taken in isolation (e.g., blowing an interview if a site doesn't also consider the strength of the application materials), and this tendency is rampant in both Phases of the Match (e.g., an applicant not being considered because of 1 criterion, rather than their application as a whole). However, with this many applicants, I'm not sure how else it would be done! Ugh, systems-level problems!!

For all of you, though.... please stay encouraged. Remember that who you are as a person is not measured by your dissertation, place of internship, or any other variable. Who you are is so much greater than all of those parts. However this turns out for each of you, I encourage you to use it to grow as a person and a future psychologist.

Wishing you all well!

Hi all,

I have a ranking question, and understand that an answer might not be possible given how secretive NMS is about their computer algorithm.

Let's say I don't match to my #1 choice because they've selected other applicants above me.

When it comes to the site that I've ranked my #2 preference, with three positions available, say they have ranked their applicants:
#1 Julia
#2 Me
#3 Carter
#4 April

Julia, Carter, and April all rank the site #1 and are initially matched to the site. Since the computer tries to match me, does April get bumped off the list, or am I omitted because all three have ranked that site their #1 preference, and it's the computer's preference to rank folks to their #1 site?

April gets bumped. Actually on the NMS website there is a video that explains it in pretty good detail. I am happy to try to find it later for you!

I had this same question because though there is a program I prefer, there is another which I still like okay but I think is much more likely to rank me highly.

Thanks for this! I've watched it before but for some reason that part did not stick with me. Here is the link:

My cat's meow sounds exactly like an infant crying, so I felt the need to clarify when she meowed during an interview because I didn't want the interviewer to think I was ignoring my crying child or something!

Is anyone else struggling with last minute rankings? I just don't know if I rank this spot last or not at all.

Is anyone else struggling with last minute rankings? I just don't know if I rank this spot last or not at all.

I guess it depends on the reasons why you do not want to rank it, and whether or not they outweigh the possibility of waiting another year. I ranked all of the sites that interviewed me, and of course there are some sites that I would be more excited to go to than others, but feel that every site has strengths and weaknesses. I really want to complete internship and graduate so I could move into the next phase of my life.

I'm just glad we all only have to wait one week for results this time around!

I wish we didn't have to wait. I wish we could know by tomorrow.

I know, me too. At first I thought it was obnoxious - that NMS actually COULD have everyone's results within a few hours once the computer was done doing its thing. And that may be true, but then I learned that NMS checks the computer's work exhaustively to make sure silly mistakes don't cause any not-so-silly (i.e., devastating) results for any of us. I felt a lot less judgmental of them once I found that out.

My appreciation aside, my patience is just... non-existent. That's why we need to stick together!

I got 6 interviews and ranked all 6, even though I hated one of them. I would rather have an internship I don't like, with good training, than go through this process again. Glad it's just a week of waiting instead of 18 days like last time

Is anyone else struggling with last minute rankings? I just don't know if I rank this spot last or not at all.
Me! I have a site that is on literally the opposite side of the country from my husband. We are currently living in different states so that is not so much my concern.. its more that it would be difficult to talk as regularly (due to the time difference) and visit as regularly as we are currently accustomed to. If I don't match, I've been given permission to move up to be with him and complete an external practicum that I believe would significantly strengthen my application... which is pretty appealing. There is also a very, very small chance of me matching to this site in the first place. I certified my rankings with it included to see how it would feel but I'm still flip flopping. Any thoughts?
