2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A friend asked me yesterday if I have gone on any more interviews. And I replied back, "I would love to go on many many more interviews, only if I had any! Still waiting." My life would be perfect right now if I had an interview at my top choice.

Today came and went with still no news. I swear sometimes I think these schools have forgotten about me.

^ Are you working those LOIs and updates? Do you have your backup plans in place to work those wait lists after May 15?

Well, I haven't been waitlisted at these schools yet. They haven't notified me of ANY post interview status. I have a letter ready for my post interview schools to those that accept them, but I'm not sure if I should send them if I have no status yet

Maybe schools aren't going to fawn all over you and accept you early, but that's when it comes down to old-fashioned begging and persistence.

yeah, I guess I shouldn't be too worried, as I haven't actually been rejected. I'm just a bit frustrated at the wait. I'm ready to call some schools up and find out what's up.

I freaking deleted a voicemail that might have been my first interview invite (or maybe something else entirely). No way to get the message back. You better believe I left a message at the school but, wow ,do I feel like a dummy. **PANIC**

Got my first post interview response today!

Waitlist -___________-

Me too. Just got a 'hold' today. So far, from the small number of interview I've had its been WL/Deferred/Hold.

The only thing that I am looking forward to is going to VT next week for a UVM interview. I will fill my car with Ben and Jerry's and eat it when I'm stressed.

UVM is freaking sexxyyyy. I wish they didn't reject me post-interview 🙁. Good luck!

Given my lack of acceptances so far I was actually considering retaking a 37 (15-14-8).

Fml. Really hope this cycle pans out. Plan to write a LOI soon.

It's not your 8 that's a problem -- it's probably your essays (if verbal really isn't your strong suit)

Do you guys think its still worth writing Letter of interest/updates pre-interview considering its so late in the cycle? I think I may write another one but I feel like its going to be a waste. I'll probably end up sending another anyways.

True, but im kinda over this ****ing process. I hate the idea of begging any more.. You know what I mean?

I hear you. If you're burnt out on sucking all of these school's dicks, and I can definitely empathize with that, then I would take a small break and just focus on reapplication efforts. Retool your personal statement, tweak your activities descriptions, continue or start some volunteering, etc.

TOTALLY agree! I was a reapp from last year and wasted time:
...sucking all of these school's dicks...
instead of:
....take a small break and just focus on reapplication efforts. Retool your personal statement, tweak your activities descriptions, continue or start some volunteering, etc.

I was sitting on two alternate lists through August last year holding on to the hopes that I would get accepted and I wasted valuable time that could've been used preparing my app to submit ASAP! Instead of sending "OH! I love {blank} about your school! PLEASE PLEEEEEASE accept meeeee!" to schools i hadn't even gotten iis, I wish I had been rehashing out my PS/LoRs/New ECs for this cycle. Thankfully I was accepted this year, but wish I got my sheet together sooner and given myself a more competitive edge by submitting in June instead of July.

The most accurate description of the application cycle ever!! I've now been sucking for 2 yrs straight.

Trust me, I could have written this. So I'm playing devil's advocate and saying it's not begging. It's demonstrating drive and proving you know you're worthy of this.

And if anything, it's practice writing about how great you are if you decide you're up for another round of this game. Silver lining?

I never thought my backup plan of applying DO would be such a lifesaver. I am currently 1/1 DO (MSU-COM) and 0/21 MD... with 1 post-interview "hold" and 1 post-interview "under consideration". I can't help but laugh, because MSU-COM is actually my favorite school so far.

This season has definitely sucked, but it's made me realize that I also suck in the eyes of MD schools ( :slap: <-- pretend this guy is an adcom member smacking the **** out of me).

Eh, oh well. Can't take it too personally!

I agree that having written tons of update letters has given me good practice. I'm a pretty stubborn optomist, so I'm still holding out on my 2 wait-lists and am getting pretty excited that March is coming around. Probably will hold out on preparing for my reapp until mid-April.

One thing that keeps me going is knowing that I've done everything in my control so far in this cycle and that if I walk away with no acceptances, I at least gave it my all.

Definitely a humbling experience

So I go to check my email, when the "Inbox (1)" notification catches my eye. Sender was "mdadmit" so my heart starts racing. Right after that I notice that it was just a school I was planning on interviewing at emailing me to confirm that I was gonna attend.

This cycle is ruining me.

Isn't that a good thing (or at least... not a bad thing)? I would love to have schools sending e-mails about interviews. 😛

It's definitely not a bad thing, but I've been not-so-patiently waiting on two post-interview decisions. As excited as I am for this interview, I was a little upset that it wasn't one of those schools.

I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started this whole process. I didn't know about SDN until AFTER I had submitted my primary, so I've been flying blind here for awhile. Despite all that and borderline stats (3.5 cGPA/3.2 sGPA/30 MCAT), I was very lucky to get 3 IIs, one from my top choice.

HOWEVER, I'm on post-interview hold/under consideration at two of them and waitlisted at the other :dead:

But it's not nearly close to the end, so I'm trying to stay optimistic......... even though I've never been more paranoid or anxious in my entire life.

Just got an email...

Dear XXX,

We are looking forward to meeting you next week!

Your day will officially begin at 9:00 am with coffee .....

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a class visit on this date.

Our interviews are scheduled in the afternoon.....

When I read the third line my heart sank because I thought it was about not being able to offer me a spot in the class. Phew.

Panic officially averted! Just got my first acceptance today! What a great way to make me forget about being wait listed at USC the other day. I'll continue to root for my fellow panicers.
Sir, Congrats to you. Been following your posts, as you are quite prolific - - reply to my post and you'll be 7,500!! Will it be California or Iowa?? Given the weather we've been having in the midwest, you may want to think twice about coming to the winter wonderland. California is so much more hospitable on the weather front. Now officially to be Dr. Silent Solider.

Nice job fellow Californian! Not sure which one you got accepted to but all of the schools that you are waiting on are great schools!

Oh yeah I don't know about Iowa, I liked it there and the school is great but I don't know how id fare in a polar vortex. Anything below 60 and I'm getting the layers on 😛 . I haven't been accepted to Iowa yet so we'll see then. Omg I'm gonna be a doctor.

seriously, if you turn down a UC, I just don't know what to say.... really.

I realize it's in Sack, but still...

You never know I've known some people who've turned down UCs. I most likely won't but it wouldn't hurt to weigh all my options. If I get options that is.

And Sac is cool, NorCal is best Cal

My post-interview decisions suck (JHU reject, WL at Columbia and NYU). This sucks even more than buying a girl $200 dinner and finding out that she's in a relationship.

And congratulations to those of you who no longer need to post on this thread.

Real. What girl would let you take her out for dinner before telling you she had a boyfriend.

Seriously? Who does that?!

Haha, $200 is an exaggeration, but that's not nice regardless.

Yeah man!!!

reapplicant, still no acceptances.

Sounds like a slap in the face and a hint at age discrimination, frankly. At the minimum, schools need to do a better job of not inviting people they have no intent of accepting.

Right. I realized that maybe I revealed too much in that post, and deleted it, but I agree totally.

Interviewed at my top choice for this year
Expected final decisions to be made today
Thread explodes with acceptances and waitlists
No decision for me
Check last year's thread
Everyone who didn't receive a decision got rejected the day after

Oh well...
