Since I figure we are all doing this, does anyone know how the health forms or this BLS class is supposed to work? Do you think they will accept the online form of the class?

Hey guys, where we do find the health forms and American Heart Association's BLS for Healthcare Providers course

There are two parts to the course, the info part and the hands-on part. You can do the info part online, but in the end you will still have to do the skills section in person. I think the entire course is around 4 hours, so it seems much easier to just do it in one go. Some places also give you the certificate on the day of. Hope this helps!

Funny thing is that I did first aid volunteering for nearly 700 hours, with a mandatory 80 hour training course before I began. But my certificate is not accepted because it's not by the American Heart Association 😛

I just received an email offering me a place on the "alternate list". I interviewed on 3/19 and was placed on "hold for spring consideration" on 5/02. I thanked them for placing me on hold, sent them an update mid-May, and emailed them a question last week. I tell them how much I love every time I email...

seems like everyone got the alternate list e-mail. did anyone not get it?

Uh I didn't get an alternate list e-mail. Anyone else in the same boat? Starting to think its a rejection +pity+

I didn't get one, either. Since the class is full already, it looks like only a handful of people will be pulled from the alternate list, so I am going to safely assume that this means a rejection.

Is there a facebook group for accepted students or any other way to start to meet people ?

I mailed back my acceptance reply form, asking to withdraw from the class. But i still get emails about housing, white coat ceremony...it's weird

There are two for COM 2018. Just search Downstate 2018 in Facebook and you'll find them.

Did anyone who returned the alternate response form get confirmation that they received it?

I didn't get any confirmation. I followed up today just to make sure they got it all right but didn't hear back. That seemed odd because their admissions office usually responds so quickly.

Thanks. I'll give them a call tomorrow

I got e-mail confirmation that they received it. The office said that they would e-mail us on the alternate list our usernames and passwords so we can log onto the checklist to see what they've received and what's still outstanding. They said they would get that e-mail out soon, hopefully by Friday afternoon.

Just called in. I hadn't gotten an email confirmation for my alternate list response form, but they said they received it. I sent mine in on the 3rd, but she said that they had just entered mine today so I should be receiving an email soon. Also, from what she said, we should also be receiving some packets in the mail with our health forms and some further information on everything.

I got an email for the alternate list offer on June 3. On June 4th they tried calling me back to "ask me some questions". I called back today - my first opportunity and they asked if I was interested. I responded "yes" and they said "you're in". I was floored!

For the alternate list transcript submission, does anyone know if we can just acquire an official transcript through our university, scan it, and email it to them rather than send it by snail mail? I have done this in the past when they asked for transcripts and they were totally okay with that. Just wondering if this is different or if anyone has talked to them and knows the answer to this.

Question to accepted students: Did you have to email a completed certificate of completion for the Financial Literacy 101 online modules in order to receive a green checkmark on the checklist page?

That's what I did. I pasted the link it provided me at the end into the email, and I got a green checkmark two days later.

On the other hand, after I finished the studying styles survey, it took about 4 days before the green check showed up. I didn't send anything for that.

Thanks rclear! Will be doing the same thing!

I got a confirmation email for my alternate list response form, but haven't gotten any email with a username and password yet. Anyone else in the same boat?

was accepted by phone off the spring hold in the past 1-2 weeks (sorry, want to preserve anonymity). I did have an acceptance prior to this, so I don't believe they are exclusively selecting applicants without acceptances.

Yep, same for me. I'm planning to call tomorrow and see if they can give me any other information.

Just accepted by phone off of the Alternate List, which I was placed on last week. Looks like there's some decent movement Alt List friends.
Had you completed all required fields specified in the original alternate list email (ie- transcript, BLS, health forms)?

Nah, I didn't even have enough time! I was offered alt place on June 5th and yesterday was only the 9th.

I did, however, email back my alternate response form VERY quickly (like, within an hour of receiving it) and followed up the next day in an email to let them know I had registered for a BLS class this week, scheduled my appointment for my health form completion, and updated my FAFSA to include Downstate. I think the amount of interest that I showed might have helped me get accepted from the list quickly, but I can't be certain, of course.

"At least 13 inches (diagonal measurement). Screen sizes smaller than 13 inches, such as found on certain ‘netbooks’, are not compatible with applications used by the College of Medicine."
I've been eye-ing the Surface Pro 3 but it's only 12 inches. I can't imagine the screen being a real limitation. Can any current students comment about the software?

Screen size is fine. Just make sure your comfortable typing on the surface pro 3 if you're using it as your primary computer. Certain utilities like your virtual microscopy classes may not work too well on the surface, but you get your own desktop in the carrels so you should be fine. I have a pro 2 and it's fine, plus the full windows 8 tablet makes it easy to read PDF files as well as good to carry around.

The only thing you have to worry about is internet compatibility with the Surface. A few months ago the internet verification program downstate uses was incompatible with the surface RT series. The Pro has full windows 8 so it should be fine.

All iPads and macs can be white listed on Downstate internet to bypass the verification program.

You can also get your Surface white listed as a tablet now too.

Can any current first years talk about the new curriculum or give their opinion on how the entire year was with it? The only other posts about the curriculum were back in September and I'm just wondering how everyone feels about it now after being exposed to it for the entire year.

I have spoken several times with a professor who has said it's "way better" than the old curriculum for what it's worth

Thanks for the feedback! Did they give any specific reasons about why it is better?

Not really, just says that the interactive lectures are really good for learning, though admittedly hard for the teachers to get used to haha.

I'm assuming the interactive lectures involve using clickers to answer questions and whatnot

Does anyone know if there is a ranking on the alternate list? (excuse me if this is a redundant question)

Hi, does anyone know where we submit the health forms?

440 Lenox Rd. is the health office, go in the building, on the first floor make a left, then another left at the end of the hallways is the office

Me too - I was going to ask if that means they're really strongly considering me, but maybe they sent it to everyone?

yeah I was hoping I could read into it as I'm high on the alternate list (no idea if it's even ranked, but I assume it is) but they probably sent it to everyone...
