2013-2014 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
are they done accepting people who interviewed last fall?
It seems like now they're only accepting people who interviewed earlier this year...

oh no...so sorry to hear!!

I am soooooo nervous. Yesterday I received a phone call from a bank asking if I as still looking for a full time job after seeing my old resume online!!! It was a NY number too! So disappointed that the call wasn't from downstate! but of course I said no as nicely as I possibly could without showing disappointment.

I forgot to post this here, but last Friday I called to inform the admissions committee that I had changed my phone number via AMCAS. I think admissions person realized that I was really nervous waiting for a phone call from them that she told me that students who are were on hold for spring consideration were not yet reviewed as of Friday, and they will gradually get back to us near the end of May! Hope this info helps for those who are still waiting!

:xf::luck::xf: Please accept me 😍 Downstate!!

To those who were just recently accepted off the Spring Hold. Were you all notified by phone and was it simply a congratulatory call? Still anxiously waiting for news.

They will ask if you are still interested. If you are, then they will let you know that you are accepted, but you also need to formally fill out a form which they will mail to you via snail mail. And if you don't happen to pick up the phone, they will leave you a voicemail as well as an email (which was my case), so don't worry about constantly checking your phone or anything. I happened to be kayaking at the time the phone call came 🙂

I got a phone call about an hour ago with the good news! I got accepted off the "hold for spring consideration" list. I interviewed in early March.

I sent in 1 update letter right before I got the news that I was put on the hold list. I never sent in a "letter of intent," but I was literally just finishing up another update letter that I intended on sending off tonight. Best of luck to all of you awaiting a decision.

I just got the phone call, accepted off the "hold for spring consideration" list... I am so happy, words cannot describe it. This is my first acceptance out of 4 waitlists, and this feeling is phenomenal. Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting, and never lose hope!

Awsome! Did you send an loi to the admissions office?

I interviewed on March 5th.

I didn't send a LOI, but I did send an update (transcript and a research studentship for this summer) 9 days before I got accepted. I think they really do look at your file again and again, and if you express enough sincerity and eagerness to attend, they do take that into consideration.

Ahh would love to be taken off hold for spring consideration and accepted. congrats to all those who heard back recently! 🙂

Is there even a 1% chance that someone receives a scholarship from Downstate?

They offer need based, but not merit based scholarships. So there is a chance, but only if you have great financial need.

Is it kosher to call Downstate and ask where I stand on the 'hold for spring consideration' wait list?

When did you interview and when were you placed on hold? Most people who have received acceptances or at least those on SDN were interviewed after February so I am beginning to wonder whether they will be looking at people who interviewed and were placed on hold before then. I called the admissions office and they said that they were hoping to have all spring hold decisions completed by the middle of June. Does anyone have an acceptance they have to spare that they would like to hand over to me !

Sorry about the repetition guys.

Interviewed 10/2/13
Got "hold for spring" email 10/24/13
Been on hold over 7 months.
I was going crazy thinking they had given up on people who interviewed from the fall. But I guess they're still getting around to that batch of us so try not to fret too much.
I'm definitely attending but I hope to see you there!

what's the CPR course? can I do that online?
Not to spam the thread but if you live in Brooklyn I know a great place that has really flexible times, great if you're working! Plus there are small classes so you actually learn the CPR technique!

PM me if you want the number

Do you think they're currently only accepting people from the hold list who have no acceptances yet?

Long time lurker, first time poster:
3.6, 30
interview Jan 28
Hold FSC Mar 18
Still eagerly waiting...

Unfortunately, I don't think so - they accept people to balance out the composition of the class, based on who accepts/declines, I believe. I'm on 4 WL, 0 acceptances, so I definitely wish that were the case!

Just got accepted off the hold list yesterday after sending in an LOI the day before!

Downstate was my only interview so I was set on finding a job in research and taking a couple years before reapplying. Can't believe it.

Now to find apartments... I hear a lot of students live in Park Slope. What's the consensus on this subject?

I live in Park Slope now, it's great, but I'm opting to live on campus for at least M1. I'm a library studier so I know I'll be on campus until real late and figure it's a good way to stay social.

Anyone else planning on doing the pre matriculation program???

I got the info today in the mail and didn't know we had to withdraw from other waitlists by the time the program starts. I don't know what to do I'm on two waitlists I really want to stay on 🙁

Can you give us information on your interview date and when you were placed on hold as well as any other updates you sent apart from LOI's ? Thanks !

Didn't know there was a pre-matriculation program at Downstate. Can you tell us if this is open to everyone and any details?

Interview: 1/27
Hold for late-spring consideration: 4/3

The lead physician at the hospital where I was volunteering sent in a letter of recommendation/update hybrid letter for me a couple weeks ago. And my LOI was rather straight-forward and honest. I told them they were my top choice.

Hope that helps. Good luck to everyone still waiting; it could happen to you like it happened to me.

got alternate list email today... anyone know about chances to get accepted off this list or how big it is? said their entering class was full

Same here - my heart nearly jumped out of my chest when I saw "SUNY Downstate - Offer" and then I read "of Alternate place" and then it dropped.

I felt the same way!

I got the same email. There are so many of us on this list, it's hard to believe there's a good chance. It seems like a lot more people are on the alternate waiting list off the spring hold than got rejected.

Got the alternate list email as well. Did they just transfer us from the hold list to the alternate list? Hurray!
