2013-2014 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

Does anyone know how many people they usually accept from those interviewed or the percent of interviewees accepted?
Im assuming for oos its ~20%....this waiting is going to hard. I interviewed ~2wks ago. Its safe to assume most likely won't hear back until late january?

I heard back exactly 1 month after my interview l, but Im not sure if it will take longer with all the holidays.

Accepted! Letter postmarked 12/4/2013. Mine arrived around 9 weeks after I interviewed... seems to be some variability in when people hear back.

I know that on the form your interviewer fills out, there is an evaluation section that the interviewer selects for the applicant as something like "accept immediately" "accept" "wait for re-review" and "reject" or something along those lines. I'm assuming that may have some effect on how long it takes to hear back.

Recently received a status update saying my application was "placed on hold for Spring review". Is this the same as the waiting list? Or is this a waiting list for the waiting list?

We are all hoping that immediately accept check 😉

Did you interview? If you did, it's the waitlist. If you didn't, you're on hold until spring, in which case they will re-review your application and either invite you for an interview or reject you.

Yes I interviewed 10/30, so it seems it's wait list.

worst case, its a waiting list for alternate list. last year i received an emails in april and again in may (end of spring) that i would receive a status update later on, was notified of my placement on the alternate list in june, and received a rejection on aug 16.

i know some people that were placed on hold that were accepted in march and april though, so there's still a chance of straight acceptance from being on hold..

Accepted here today! I interviewed on Halloween and the letter is marked from Dec 6th. I am OOS so I am really shocked with this acceptance!

For a second I thought Halloweens November 30th....missed both the month and the date! haha. Congratulations!

Thanks for the info. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Did anyone who had an interview on November, 4th hear anything?

So if I interviewed on 10/22 and haven't heard anything back... is that a good sign that I got an "accept"? I would have heard back if it were any of the other three, right?! Haha

Maybe your acceptance package is currently in the mail right now! If I recall correctly, not getting an email from Downstate is a good thing. Fingers crossed for you!!

Thanks! I figured I would've received an email by now if I had been anything but accepted... Let's hope that logic turns out to be sound!

Hey, yeah I think it's time I finally break the ice.

Had my interview yesterday on 12/16/13. Don't really know what to think of it as it was very conversational and we talked about Brooklyn (I'm from Brooklyn) and a little bit about my application. Really looking to come here and hoping for some Brooklyn love

IS 3.65 GPA (both) and 33 MCAT
Wutchu guys think?
And when do you think us December interviewees are gonna hear back?

Hey! How was the interview? Did you tour after/when were you done by? Thanks! 🙂

Hey! It was pretty conversational, he kept saying "Oh yeah, I have to ask these questions, they're annoying" off some list. I was the morning interview and we toured afterwards. I also checked out the student housing for kicks. Have you interviewed at Downstate too?

I interviewed first week of December. This marks the third week ~ Hopefully decisions will come before mid January (being VERY optimistic, with the holidays and all).

Interviews are conversational. I was also shown the sheet with the list of questions .... and my interviewer was saying...Uh obviously you have done this. check. next. (did not even ask me the question). I also had my interview in the morning/short tour, was done by 1pm.

Haha yeah, I guess I'm just being the neurotic/anxious premed at this point, since I haven't heard anything from any other schools

Anyone apply MD/MPH and hear back from the School of Public Health yet? I was accepted to the MD program in October and thereafter decided to apply to the MPH program. I followed the instructions on the website (I.e., changed my AMCAS application to reflect I was applying to a combined degree program) but I haven't heard anything yet. Anyone else hear anything?

I applied MD/MPH too but designated it from the beginning. About a month after I was complete, I got an email from the School of Public Health asking me to say which of four public health tracks I was interested in, and to respond within five days. But it didn't seem to have any information re: a decision made on my application, the email looked like it was information they wanted from all MD/MPH applicants. I know this isn't much, but it's the only communication I've heard from the School of Public Health so far. Hope this helps!

Also, congrats on your acceptance! You could always try calling admissions at the School of Public Health too.

Felt great about my interview this week but not an NY state resident so not so sure about my chances. Do they let you know via email as well as mail if accepted?

Unfortunately no, it only comes via snail mail. Any other news like a rejection or hold will come by email, so just hope you don't get an email from them!

^yea...no news (electronic) for downstate is good news!

Any MD/PhD applicants out there? I haven't heard anything myself.

Thanks so much!! That helps a lot. Yeah I was planning on calling at some point but I'm sure they're flooded with calls from people like me so I thought I'd just see where others stood.
Thank you again and good luck to you!

Anyone else pretty sure they will be attending Downstate next year? I'm almost positive I will be going here. (unless Mt. Sinai decides to get back to me which doesn't seem to be happening)

Anyone else mostly decided about Downstate yet?

I'm most likely set to go here as well. I've definitely started to look at various apartments in the area. Although I have an interview at my state school next year, I'll have a tough decision to make if I get in there. I'd say both New York City and San Francisco are desirable locations with great opportunities but obviously cost will play a role.

Thanks! Ugh, now I'm going to be even more fixated on my inbox number

I'm sure I'm going! I'm super excited =)

applied MD/MPH. Interviewed in Nov. Received MPH acceptance via snail mail. Thoughts? Says MD decision will come in a separate letter.

I think that means you've been accepted--congrats!! you should call the office on Monday to check for real if your letter doesn't come in the mail over the weekend, though.

Congratulations to all those that were accepted, feel free to PM/post any questions you have about the school, new curriculum, on campus housing...etc. To those that are on the wait list, good luck, I know Downstate interviews into late March, early April, so don't give up hope.

Anyone here interview on 11/5 and receive a decision either way?

I will be interviewing here in several weeks. Due to possible heavy snow and traffic, I'm considering to take LIRR and subway to get there.

For those of you who used the public transportation from Long Island to get to Downstate, did you just get off the train at Penn Station and take the subway? Can you tell me how exactly you got there? Any other things I should keep in mind when I leave in the morning of the interview day?

What other things, besides reviewing the questions from sdn interview and reading my application, should I be doing to prepare?

I used directions from Hotstop and I got there just fine and I interviewed when we had a pretty bad storm. Certainly review your application and your answers to your secondary. MCAT prep was a big part of my interview.

I would aim to get there at least an hour early because the last thing you want is for there to be unexpected traffic and now you have to worry about being late which can add enough stress to throw off your composure for the day. If you do get there early, if you keep walking down the hallway past the admissions office, there's a cafeteria you can sit in and have something to eat or drink or just wait until your designated time to go to the admissions office

Overall, it's a very low stress interview day though with a set sheet of questions that aren't intended to trip you up so just relax and be confident. Good luck!

I've never commuted from Long Island to downstate but I live about 5 blocks from downstate. I also know the subway system pretty well. You can take the LIRR to penn station and then take the 2 train to winthrop. The LIRR also stops at Atlantic ave, and then you could take the 2 or 5 train to winthrop. It will put you 3 blocks away from the school. Taking the LIRR would cut down your time on the subway considerably. Don't know how it would change the price though.

Was just about to post this, take the LIRR to Atlantic Terminal (transfer at Jamaica) and take the 2 or 5 to Winthrop 100%. Taking the LIRR to Penn Station is just wasting time.

Just wanted to add in case you haven't been to Atlantic Terminal before. When you get off the LIRR and enter the station you walk to the left to the subway. After you get through the turnstile, go down the stairs and make a right you can take either 2 or 5 (towards brooklyn college) and get off at Winthrop Street. From there its a quick walk over. The front of Downstate (on Clarkson) has a bunch of construction so you have to enter through a side entrance on New York Ave between Clarkson and Lenox. There should be signs on the sidewalk and when you walk in there should be a security guard at the entrance to help direct you where you need to go.

If the side entrance is closed for some reason you can enter through the basic science building across from the dorm on Lenox. Again a security guard is at the entrance who can direct you where to go.

When you head back you can ask for a shuttle to the train if you want and all trains (2 & 5) from Winthrop take you back to where you started.

Congrats on your interview and best of luck!

PS. The entrance for subway going back is at a different spot fyi

Interview invite today! Very excited since this is one of my top choices.
