2013-2014 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody know if SUNY Downstate does many post-interview rejections? Still waiting for post-interview decision...

Has anyone here applied for the MD-MPH program? If so, can anyone who got accepted to both tell me how long it took to hear back from both programs? I got my acceptance to the MPH program but am waiting on the MD part still (the most important part!). Thanks

Can someone post what the year's in state tuition will be? I'm switching my residency from out of state to in state but won't be able to until May so my financial aid letter shows out of state tuition. I noticed the number on my letter does not match their website so I'm assuming the instate probably doesn't match either.

Yeah ^^^ I can check my award letter when I get home for the exact amount, but its roughly 32,000 (within a few hundred dollars).

Plus there are a bunch of fees of course because fees are an essential part of paying for anything.

Have any recent preinterview rejections gone out? Still hoping for an interview !

Withdrew my acceptance today. Good luck to those waiting 🙂

Has anybody heard who interviewed at the end of January? I know they said approximately 10 weeks for a decision?

10 weeks? Wow, that's a quite a long time. I interviewed in mid-January and am waiting for a decision still, anxiously.... When I emailed the office they said 6-8 weeks (compared to the website which says 4-6 wks) but I did see that in this thread there were at least several people who didn't hear until approximately 10 weeks after.
Anybody else from mid-January waiting on a decision still?
Also same question as before, has anyone been rejected post-interview?

Hey guys I wanted to know if any current medical school student that are currently living on campus can tell me what's it's like! I also wanted to know if I can somehow come look at ur next week? I need to figure about soon if I should live on or off campus. Thank you!

I interviewed mid Jan and got that wonderful hold for spring consideration email Feb 27. Sooo.. 6 weeks turn-around for me to at least hear back, approximately.

Maybe Skigal you're waiting for an acceptance letter in the mail! lol 🙂

literally so many fingers crossed. Could you PM me your actual interview date? I'm a little stressed if you can't tell haha.

Well I answered my own question today. Yes there are post-interview rejections.
Checked my snail mail finally and saw a letter post marked early March.
Seems like the hold-email is the best thing people can get now.
Good luck to all still in the running.

They are still interviewing for a few more weeks. Are we just interviewing for waitlist spots?

Are them still sending out interview invitations?

Has anyone who interviewed 2/6 or later heard back yet? Also it seems as though people have been getting acceptance letters via email or by actual mail?

interviewed 1/22 and still haven't heard

Interview 2/6 Hold for Spring. Such a bummer :/

What date did you hear back from them?

Also I know there probably is no pattern, but do you guys think people who get rejected (without being placed on a waitlist) hear back quicker than the rest? I understand that their may not be a pattern, but I'm curious if anyone has an opinion on that.

just received my fin aid package, all loans, even though i have a disadvantaged status. unless aid/scholarship comes in another letter, guess it's not meant to be

Heard back yesterday.

It's been done time and time again but are any of you deciding between upstate and downstate?

Withdrew my acceptance (I am OOS FYI). Good luck to those still waiting!!!

I interviewed on 2/4. No news yet.

Happy first day of spring everyone!

i am deciding between upstate and downstate. what are your thoughts? i am going to research day at downstate on the 2nd of april, to attend a class and talk to students, etc. do you know any specifics about the "new" curriculum at downstate? i did like the more traditional approach at upstate...

Yeah for some reason I thought downstate was a relatively low tier school. It seems to be pretty good

More mid tier, it financial issues and it's location can be seen as issues but those match results speak for themselves

I dont know much about it at all actually. sorry :/

i think upstates M1 curriculum this year was pretty intensive and so they're planning on going back to the original length anatomy course instead of the hyper concentrated version this year. i dont know much about the downstate curriculum changes but im sure others on this thread can help you there.

What I didn't like about Upstate was the cramming of a bunch of tests into a few days at the end of the semester. Allows you more fun and freedom during the semester but it's too much at once.

Also my understanding of Downstate's new curriculum is just that there is more PBL, that it's integrated, and it's P/F (I believe). Pretty much what every other school is doing these days. Also, they have formative assignments every so often.

Has anyone heard anything recently? I interviewed on 1/28 and haven't received anything. I'm so anxious!

anyone know how decisions are usually made post-interview? are acceptances usually sent via email/mail? or are rejections/hold notifications sent via email/mail? thanks!

I got my hold via email.

Acceptances and rejections are by snail mail. "Hold for Spring Consideration" is via email.

Sometimes though, you'll get an email about filling out info for a background check. This is prompted by either an acceptance or wait list by an institution but on this thread so far, this email has only been sent to accepted students prior to them receiving the snail mail acceptance package.

Anyone do the CPR course? Can we do part 1 online and then the skills part in person after? Or do we have to do the full thing at once in person?
Also it's just the BLS course for health profs from the AHA right?

Q2: Can any current students weight in on this: How much do books&supplies actually cost? I'm trying to calculate how much to take out for loans and according to the award letter they set aside 1500 for books and supplies? Is this actually what it costs, or are they giving a max amount that I will spend if I buy every single thing brand new etc?

Hello Downstate, I love your school. I am waiting desperately for an interview... please! Thank you 🙂

I had my interview today and one of the tour guides mentioned he knows people from the class who interviewed well into April. Good luck!

Anyone from 2/13 or later interview date hear back yet? Also did anyone here get accepted without receiving the background check email before that?

That keeps my hopes up! I swear... I really would love to go to school here... I am a native New yorker... I am married and my family base is all here ... It really would be great... Now hopefully they pull me off that pre interview hold!

Replied too soon yesterday! Interviewed 2/18/14, yesterday was put on hold for spring review. Between that, my "Under consideration" status at Albany, and wait lists at two other schools, I get the feeling no one wants to make any definite decisions about me for some reason. Not good enough to be accepted, yet not bad enough to be rejected? So frustrating.
