Is team underdawg ready to apply next week?
You better believe it

I was wondering if anyone could offer advice on whether I have selected schools that I have a decent shot at or not. Or if I have left one out that you would advise for me to apply to? I have done a decent amount of research on each but I would love to hear from those who have first hand experience. I am a TX resident.

A.T. Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, MO
A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, AZ
Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine, AL
Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, NC
Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Carolinas Campus, SC
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Bradenton Campus, FL
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Erie/Seton Hill, PA
Lincoln Memorial University - DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, TN
Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, FL
West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Admissions Office, WV
Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Pomona, CA
William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, MS

Pomona and Nova are the long shot ones. I have family in CA would love to be there.

Did I miss TCOM in the list? If not, por que no?

Fellow underdogs,

According to aacomas I'm sitting at a 3.12 cgpa, 3.05 sgpa and 27 mcat. I think with the 3 retakes that I have planned for fall, I may go up a bit. For now though, does anyone want to advise me where I should apply just to get my app verified? My stats are way below the averages of all schools so I really don't know where to apply 🙁. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks guys!

Try KCOM, WVSOM, SOMA, NSU, Touro NY, ACOM, PNWU, LMU, LECOM's, WCU, KYCOM maybe, PCOM Ga, Touro new branch, and Touro NV. You've actually got a decent shot! Just make sure you apply broadly.

I have a 25 MCAT and my gpas were very similar to yours (my science was very slightly lower) and I got interviews at ACOM, Campbell, wcu, LMU, PCOM-Ga, nsu, and Lecom-B. I know for sure tho that my interviews at Lecom-b and especially NSU were only because I live so close to the school and someone cancelled so don't take much weight into those two. I got rejected from AT still in AZ, LECOM-Pa, VCOM-CC, and got placed on eternal hold at WVSOM (they're big into region preference and volunteering both of which I lacked or was limited on)

Not to say you shouldn't apply to the others but I was just giving you my personal experience. Hope this helps

thanks for the info! any acceptances at those you interviewed with?

I am applying to TCOM and a few MD schools in TX as well. I tend to separate it from the others since it is under TMDSAS lol.

Thank you for trying to encourage me! By the way what do you mean when you say "apply broadly?" This is 14 schools.

Would I be okay if I just apply to 5 schools for now and then add some after fall? And is Touro new branch the one in CA? Thanks 👍

Good luck! Are you planning on retaking ur mcat? I would say that u have a shot at getting at least interviews but the 6 in bs is worrisome - if it was any other section u got a 6 in I wouldn't b as concerned

I think you may want to consider retaking your mcat. The BS section is the worst one to get a below 7 in. Goro would pretty much automatically can your application if you applied to his school.

Yes I am.

I'm still baffled that I got so low in BS. I remember walking out of the testing center thinking to myself that the BS section was easier than any of the practice tests I took. Needless to say I was horrible disappointed with a 6.

What's with the "no longer underdog list"? I think anyone with a 6 or below in a subsection should be considered an underdog, no?

anyone want to tell me how my odds are looking?

3.75 Cum. GPA 3.8 Science GPA 24R MCAT (7 PS, 7 B, 10 VR) - Umass Amherst

Feeling like an underdog with my MCAT scores...White male, decent application volunteer/shadowing..currently work for the American Cancer Society with three different hospital systems. Should also mention I'm a political science major and have been out of school for 1 year now.

Def an underdog. I can't really say much, but that low BS score may hurt you the most. But it is redeemed slightly by a good verbal. But yes if you can retake, go for it. If not apply really early.

3.65 GPA with a 22 MCAT currently, though I'm retaking in July.

applied last year with these stats, 2 interviews, 2 waitlists.

Your MCAT is above average, your science GPA is below average, but all in all and being an ex military makes you far from being an underdog. Good luck!

they should be fine. GPA makes up for it.

So as having been successful in previous years we're opening up the underdogs thread for this medical school admission cycle! I want this to be a place were we can respectfully discuss admissions issues and how to be successful in getting into medical school.

I would like to be added to the list please.

3.23 cGPA
3.23 sGPA
3.63 Masters biomedical science at osteopathic school

26 MCAT

Over 300 hours of shadowing
2 years cancer research

Applying for sure to:

AT Stills- Kirksville
Des Moines
KCUMB
Marian
Midwestern-Chicago
Rocky Vista
PCOM
VCOM
Soma
Midwestern arizona

I would like to go to school in a big city but beggars can't be choosers. I might throw in LMU or Lecom to give myself a better chance of getting an acceptance. Been graduated for 2 years now and I really don't want to wait any more. Guess I will take what I can get. Let me know what you guys all think.

I would say to try to retake your mcat again if you haven't taken it too many times already, and add more schools to your list! Touro is in Manhattan, UMDNJ-SOM is right outside of Philly, and Nova is in Fort Lauderdale (beautiful weather, I really hope I get off the waitlist there but I interviewed so late idk what will happen lol).

PCOM and UMDNJ-SOM are awesome schools for the Philly area because you have direct access to amazing hospitals nearby and potential residencies at Jefferson, CHOP, HUP, etc.

Okay so thanks to user3's help, I'm deciding to apply to KCOM, SOMA, ACOM and the LECOMS and LMU with 3.12/3.05/27. So does anyone else have any thoughts? 😳

How did your two interviews go last year?? Did they say anything about your 22 MCAT? Which schools were the interviews at?! Good luck with the retake! I'm in a similar situation, will be my first year applying though!

Add another 10 schools minimum.

It's funny you say that because his stats are considered good if he were black.

Your stats are very borderline and weak, if you don't apply broadly then you may not get accepted. That's simply the way it is.

You're right. I just don't understand why applying to more schools will help. The rest of the schools seem to have either a regional bias or are way too competitive for me. That's why I settled with those 6. I may consider adding WVSOM and Touro NY. That brings the list to 8. I don't know what else to add. What do you think?

Because the app cycle is by nature unpredictable, and that becomes truer as your stats become lower (to a point). Many regional biases are not as strong as you might think.

WVSOM's regional bias, for example, is not that strong in terms of accepted applicants. But their school policies might deter out-of-state applicants (comparing in-state/out-of-state tuition/deposits etc).

If money is a factor, I understand. But don't cheat yourself out of an acceptance for no reason... you don't want to spend another year going through this process if you don't have to.

And your stats aren't far from mine, at a glance.

Ah, I see where you're coming from. Thanks for pointing that out. What if I add more schools after the fall update? Or will that just be too late? Thanks for the advice!

When all is said and done, when will your updated scores be released to schools?

You mean after the fall update? Probably mid december.

I wouldn't wait unless it's a school that you know will screen you out with your present numbers. That's fairly late in the game.

For the rest, just make sure you show on your app that there's a pending MCAT score.

Alrighty then. Now I just need to figure out how to pay for all these primaries and secondaries 😱

That part blows.

Looking at your loan awards in the eye and doing Entrance Counseling is almost worse, though.

For a lot of people though, I'd argue it's worth doubling down and putting your resources into one app cycle. Was fairly surprised at the schools I had interview invites from, and also surprised at some that put me on hold/rejected me.
