2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

Hey everyone,

Your everyday average underdog here !

I had one question. Is a year old single speeding ticket 😀 a misdemeanor (I'm from Ohio) ? If its not, is it something that I put in the application ?

Test scores should generally improve for FL practice exams. I was just saying that since you're telling him to postpone that would delay his app even further. I think this is bad advice, that's why I'm interjecting. He's already taken the MCAT, and so he's not going to improve much between the span of an extra month studying for the retake. Scoring that low on subsequent practices indicates poor test taking skills (IMO) which can't be cured over short lengths of time.

Well said 👍

If this list of underdogs is accurate then I have been seriously misled on the average stats of DO applicants. 🙂 A lot of people on here have stats solid enough to be expected to get in somewhere if they apply early/broadly. But I understand pre-med anxiety is very real.

tbh I'm getting really discouraged due to my low MCAT score (24) because I thought I would be able to get secondaries from most schools, but a lot of them have cutoffs that will keep me from getting them. This sets me back quite a bit if I can't even get some secondaries until I receive my newer MCAT score in sept

Got my Mcat score.

Almost certain to get love. Good luck!

Is this true? What are the schools that you all know that do this. I potentially am gonna try this round with that Mcat and trying to compile a list of schools...

PCOM claims to have a cutoff at 8 for each section. I have known one person get accepted to a DO school with a 5 in VR but they had 3.8 GPAs.

If you are like me and just despise this MCAT exam for the verbal reasoning alone, join the party and apply this round for the heck of it. I shadowed a DO that said he did not regret going ahead and applying to schools with a poor VR score vs taking another year off to retake.

PCOM's claim was an average of 8 per section. Which meant a 24 as a cutoff and even then plenty of 23's have been accepted.

From their website:

"4. Each applicant must sit for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), which is given multiple times each year. Prospective students are urged to take the test as early as possible and certainly not later than August of the year prior to matriculation.. The MCAT must be taken within three years of desired matriculation. Application to the DO program is comprehensive and competitive. The Faculty Committee on Admissions recommends applicants to the program have at least an 8 or higher in each section of the MCAT."

It doesn't state that you would be screened out but it is a good indication.

c3.47 s3.41 MCAT 24 (P8, V5, B11) and tons of EC....just got this today....should I still even apply or retake??? Verbal got me a little worried....im scared...I would love to stay in California...

also have a misdemeaner (it was dumb)....

you likely will get in somewhere, but very unlikely in CA. i would apply to pnwu, acom, cusom, mucom, vcom, lmu, wvsom, comp-nw, lecom-e, kcumb, kcom, soma, and touro-ny. and maybe comp-ca and touro-ca as reaches.

Thanks you all for the input, I think I'm still gonna apply this round and reapply and retake MCAT if nothing good comes out by the end of this year. I already graduated school 3 years ago, 4 years aint bad.

Hi everyone, I am going to join you guys in this journey. My stats c3.90, s3.95, 26 mcat, with a 6 in verbal 🙁
I am going to apply mainly focused on location so, California, New York, Washington state, Florida, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, Philadelphia, New Jersey schools. This will give me a total of ~14 schools. Is this good, given my stats?
I am planning a retake late July, but will submit my application next week. Also, don't have a DO LOR, but can get a MDs, is this a deal breaker.

good luck to everyone.

The letter wont be a deal breaker. You sound pretty similar to my case actually. It sucks that the 60 minute exam is holding us back.

I know 🙁 we'll see how it goes. good luck to you!

Really this underdog thread is getting out of control. Like 70% of the OP's come with GPA's greater than 3.7😕

Yea I thought UDs were those with low 3s and high 2s and a unbalanced MCAT.

I'll honestly say that with a 5 in VR I think you're unlikely to get in anywhere.

Generally we're just going with the definition of an underdog as someone who either has a LizzyM under 62 ( Mcat + (GpaX10)) or someone with a mcat score that has a 6 or lower in it or is below the average for takers.

That's how I feel man. Too many high GPA and close to avg mcat applicants in here. If this is what the new underdogs are, i dont know where I belong with my 3.15/3.0 and 28..

👎

people with mediocre overall scores still have decent outcomes, even with low verbal scores.

Below average?

that's so crazy to me that you can have a 3.0 and a 32 and fit her requirements, but I have a 3.97 and a 24 and just scrape by. And it's a little off anyway because with a 24 I have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting into any allopathic school.

right, I have somewhat similar stats to yours....maybe we belong to a new classification of under-under dogs

What's your point, the competitive level for MD schools starts at like 67. Also yes, a 3.0/32 is pretty uncompetitive, look at many of the people who applied with that and you'll see they usually scrap by in the cycle.

3.19/3.15 (gpa/sgpa) 27 (9,9,9) with great ECs and LORs.

planning to retake mcat for third time..(first time was 22S: 8,5,9) and retake courses in fall after application is sent. good idea or bad?

GPA and MCAT underdog here.
3.33 sGPA, 3.33 cGPA, 23 MCAT (I am waiting on my MCAT retake score).

Previous healthcare professional degree.
Experience as a college science professor.
100+ hours shadowing a DO.

I think you should use the money you'd spend retaking to add more schools tbh. With a 3.2/27 you should get some love.

I wish you luck on the mcat. Hopefully you'll leave the underdog house 🙂

I would not retake that mcat if I were you because if your mcat score goes down (lets say 25), that will raise a red flag...Your 27 mcat score is good for almost all DO schools... You should work on increasing your GPAs... Retake a few classes that you had C or lower might bring your GPAs up to 3.3+. With such GPAs, you will be competitive at many DO schools...However, I think you a shot to get in somewhere with your current stats if you apply broadly to the newer schools...

If i were to retake classes, should I mention that on my application when i submit it (this week) or should i wait to see if i hear back before i tell them. Main concern with telling them is that, they might hold off on my application till i get the grades back by which time it will be december

I think I got one:

If there are summer classes that will end in August, I think you should mention that. However, if there are fall classes that will end in December, I don't think you should mention it because you don't want them to hold off your application and wait for these grades in December so they can start working on it... I think you should be able to get in somewhere as it is now, but you won't get to be 'choosy'.

Go ahead and put them. You should be fine as is with your numbers anyway. Lots of applicants have future classes they will take listed on their apps.

You don't think they might hold off on his/her and wait for these grades... I think the poster will most like get in somewhere regardless.

I am planning to retake MCAT in late July - early Aug, because I know I can get at least a point or two higher so I am thinking about not mentioning either and will when I get my score and then tell them my retake grades in december if I dont get any response by then. Good idea or no?

do not retake the mcat for a point or two! Period.

Don't retake. You might risk going down.

I met with admission officers from three different schools and two said even if my mcat goes up a point it will help?

I have the same MCAT and when I talked to admissions at OSUCOM, AZCOM, LECOM and PCOM-GA all said don't bother retaking the MCAT since it's right about the average for each.

They said to instead focus on retakes and, in my case, a post-bacc.

All in all, if you have good EC's and LoR's, one or two points on your MCAT may not be the best investment of time, money and effort. If you bumped it up at least 5 points, then it would definitely make a worthwhile difference

My only issue with that is, I wont be able to retake courses till Fall semester which means my grades wont be in till end of December. I dont want schools to put my file on hold till they receive my grades, thats why Im hoping to get above a 29 in which case I think/hope that will convince them to send me an interview invite

ahhh ok. Sounds like we have the same predicament. If you know you have the time and energy to study and do better than the first two, then by all means, go for it. But user3 is right, if you do go down it will come up as a orange-amber-red flag (depending on how much you drop)

I'm hoping my post-bacc program will not only bump up my gpa, but also prep me for the MCAT in the event that I absolutely need to take it next year. Though I'm in the same circumstance where I won't get grades until december.
