2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks.... I am starting to read now so I can up that VR score to a 8+...I am positive I can get 10+ in both PS and BS; therefore, 60-70% of my study time will be spent in VR.

On a side note: My friend who is an URM like me with similar GPAs (3.3cGPA and 3.1+ sGPA) and 23 (8PS/8VR/7BS) MCAT has gotten 2 ii so far while I cant even apply with 9/4/9 MCAT...

If you can get your MCAT up to 27, you would have a decent shot at MD as well.

MD admission averages for AA matriculants is similar to DO admission averages for non-urm matriculants.

3.6/3.75 GPAs, and 14/6/11 MCAT here. How do you think I feel when my 9/9/9 friends with 3.5s are getting into MD schools?

It's life.

I have no problem with that but I think it's kind of weird since med school is about science...

👍 If med school consisted of reading non-science verbal passages and answering questions about them all day, I would laugh and walk right out.

A 3.5/27 non-URM applicant would be lucky to land a SINGLE interview at an MD school.

You definitely dropped the ball not applying MD. I know someone (white male, not from texas) with a 6 vr and 30 that got 3 MD interviews during the 2011-2012 cycle. I think he only applied to 6 or 7 schools.

Haha, consider that ball un-dropped. I did apply to MDs this cycle along with DOs. I know it is still early, but hoping to get some love at some schools that look past VR.

So far with MDs it has been 2 On-holds and 2 rejections.

My stats: sGPA 3.9, MCAT 23 with 6 in VR, 2 publications, multiple various EC's

ACCEPTED! There is hope for you all with low MCATs like myself 🙂

Would you guys think a non-URM California resident with a 3.3cGPA, 3.0sGPA, 25 MCAT has any chance of getting into a DO school?

Raising that science GPA to a 3.3 and retaking the MCAT (aim for a 27+) would put you in much better shape.

What do you guys think the max lizzy score is for underdogs for this cycle?

If they apply right now, very broadly including to all the newer schools then yes!

Hello all, I am a new member to this forum. SDN is a great resource for premeds like myself! So I thank any regular posters to this forum. I consider myself somewhat of an underdog as well. I struggled with the MCAT twice because of a lack of time studying (played college basketball at South Dakota state). But, was able to finally achieve 27 (10,8,9) with 3.7 cGPA and 3.72 sGPA. I wish all of you fellow premeds luck!

A 3.7/3.72/27 is not an underdog by any means. That's a solid 64 Lizzy M score which is competitive and within the range of most schools.

By the way, it's sick you played college ball 😀. My school has a D1 team, I love going to the gym and watching them play.

Thanks for the reply sir. I wish you and everyone else the very best!

Wanted to update my status with the underdawgs-elite:
Aug 15: 7/8/8: 23
May 11: 7/1/8: 16
Applied very broadly, hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone this year.

Awesome improvement

Thought I should update everyone and withdraw myself from the underdawgs. Got my MCAT retake scores today. 9/12/9 = 30. I think with this score and my 3.97 sGPA and 3.92 cGPA I should be fairly competitive for a state MD school but as of now will be matriculating at CUSOM where I recieved an acceptance recently. Thank you all for the friendship and encouragement and I wish you only best in the pursuit of your dreams! Godspeed!

Impressive work, Hothamh2o. I agree with you GPA, I think you have a great shot at some MD programs. I think you should look into that since state MD schools tend to be considerably cheaper than DO schools.

Regardless of what you decide, congrats on your MCAT improvement and on your early acceptance to CUSOM.

How did you manage to get a 1? I thought you had to purposely guess wrong in everything to get that.

I think he/she should have rescored that test. Scoring that low is almost as hard as scoring 10.

Regardless, congrats stUUdent on your new score.

I wanted to add that I'm also going to withdraw from underdog status. I got my mcat score back today of 30 (10PS, 9VR, 11BS) so with my gpas of 3.77/3.70 I am going to apply very broadly and see what happens. I appreciate all the encouragement I've gotten so far from this thread, and I sincerely wish everyone the best. Good luck guys!

Wow, that's another strong come back from the first attempt. It must have felt really good (I know the feeling).

Are you going to apply to MD programs?

Yes, but I only have 1 state school with very few seats, so I don't really know what my MD chances are overall. Plus I had to retake 1 class, so my AMCAS gpa isn't as high as my AACOMAS. I was/am still totally happy with DO, but we'll see I guess 🙂

I had it re-scored but still ended up with a 1. I found my mistake while taking a full length; I answered the first 2-3 questions then hastily went to the next passage without scrolling down to answer the remaining questions, on May 11, I answered the last passage in 12 seconds and I didn't have a chance to make sure I answered all the questions. I hope people read this so they avoid making my mistake. I don't mind talking about it; not ashamed, I would rather help people avoid this mistake.

Congrats O Grady!

I practiced VR all summer as it was obviously my weak area, and reviewed the sciences. We can do this!

I'll join the underdawgs.

cGPA: 3.43
sGPA: 3.29

MCAT: 2013: 28 (10/9/9), 2012: 22 (8/6/8)

App submitted 8/26. Submitted pretty late so I feel like that adds to my underdawgery.

I am also still looking for a DO to shadow. I am also applying to some MD just for the piece of mind.

Not even close to being an underdog. You are fine.

With that balanced MCAT and decent cGPA/sGPA, I think you will get some love.

For a MD, I would consider you an underdog for sure (IMO anything below a 66 Lizzy M is an underdog, however I do know of a few 65s who got lucky... Most people I know who have gotten in recent years had 67+ Lizzy Ms). However your Lizzy M for 61-62 hovers around the average of DO matriculants. Just don't apply to more MDs then DOs, I think it would be more worth applying heavily towards DO. Friend did that to be safe, she did get into one low tier MD but got into 4 DO schools. She had similar numbers gpa wise with you but a 30 MCAT from a top 20 school. She recommended anyone with a 3.4/30 MCAT score who are interested in applying to MDs to take a gap year and try to either find a clinical research job or find any job and volunteer/shadow on the side. You may get some love and get waitlisted/accepted at the low tier med schools with 65-67 Lizzy M averages.

Underdog update:

Was rejected post-secondary from LECOM-B.

I have my first interview at ACOM next week.

Nothing yet from anyone else, hopefully WCUCOM will call soon!

Hey all-

Just submitted my DO primary application about 2 weeks ago. Still in the "processing" stage. Was wondering what everyone thought:

Stats:
cGPA: 3.31
sGPA: 3.35
MCAT: 33O (12P 9V 12B)

Grade trend is pretty good.. first semester 2.8 ended 3.6

I took some time off after college and taught for awhile. Now I am doing an AmeriCorp position working in rural health.. Also have some decent ECs when doing my undergrad...

Am I an underdog? I applied fairly broadly. Hoping for Des Moines or OUCOM (but I'm out-of-state for both).

Thanks for the advice.

Nope not an underdog by any means. Your gpa is a little below/right at matriculant average and your mcat is stellar. If you apply broadly you will get multiple acceptances. If you apply to 20 schools I would guess you would be offered an interview at more than half.

Des Moines and OUCOM are both great schools. However, if you get accepted to both I would pick DMU without any hesitation.

OUCOM has a contract you must sign if you are from out of state binding you to do a residency/practice medicine in the state of ohio. If that sounds like a good plan for you, go for it. But that was a huge deal breaker for me.

Good luck!

Not even close to being an underdog. You are fine.

I feel like my app has some things going pretty bad for it though. I took my first three years at a cc and did all pre reqs there. I had like a 3.65 when I transferred. My university GPA is only a 3.0 for science and 3.1 for non-science. I got four C+'s my first year at the university and they were all in science classes (2 of them being Anatomy and physiology...)
So I guess I'll see but I just realllly want to go to a school in CA.

Hey everyone, MCAT didn't turn out so good (23, PS 8, BS 8, VR 7).

Post-bachelor stats: Science GPA = 3.98; non-science GPA = 4.0

Cumulative stats: Science GPA = 3.79; non-science GPA = 3.20; total GPA = 3.37

Thanks in advance for advice 🙂

chances look solid. apply broadly but avoid these schools- DMU, CCOM, NSU, AZCOM, Touro-Ca, Touro-Nv, RVU, COMP, COMP-NW, and LECOM-B.

I know for a fact that COMP screens for at least a 24 and Touro NV for a 25.

Thanks man, I will definitely look into that!

First post-secondary rejection of the season 🙁 darn you SOMA. I actually wanted to go there too. Moving forward!

Touro NV and LECOM-B interviews in October. My wallet is going to cryyyyyy
Sorry to hear that. Good luck on the interviews though!

So, any schools that might take a second glance with a subsection of 6?

6/9/9 = 24
cGPA = 3.38
sGPA = 3.28

Well, I'm officially an underdog. MCAT came back today; 18 (5/7/6). Any advice?
