2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After a few months of lurking I thought I'd make a post so future underdogs might be encouraged. I applied to 20+ schools and I am now accepted at ACOM, LMU-DCOM, LECOM-SH, and DMU-COM. I also have interviews lined up at KCOM and PNWU but I'm canceling them now that I'm accepted at my top choice.

3.3 cGPA, 3.15 sGPA, MCAT 28 (12v, 9bs, 7ps)

I've talked to a med school adcom at a specific MD school. He said the cGPA is weighted pretty heavily and a low science GPA can be negated by a great MCAT score and a decent explanation on why you attained a low science gpa (less than 3.3) in the case of MDs. He said usually a low science GPA will be questioned in an interview and be prepared to have a decent explanation for it. He said his science GPA had a downward trend when he was a college student (went from a 3.8 first two years to a low 3 the last two years. He had some family problems to attend to).

At his school, the Lizzy M with total gpa and MCAT is a 68.6. He has stated that the school is pretty MCAT heavy. They like students who score close to the mid 30s. Most schools in my state range from 67-69 for MDs and about a 64 for DOs.

lol, I had to do exactly that for DO interviews. A 3.1 is a sore point anywhere in the US.

His own encounter with a declining trend shows you how much the history of the person(s) reviewing your file matters.

Yeah. He said a 3.5/3.3/33+ would do fine in applying MD/DO and has a good chance of getting into some low tier MDs. His university has shown that trend of having low BCPM gpas but high MCAT scores being accepted.

DMU? That's fantastic.

Congrats! Nice VR score...

Even for a DO?

I know a URM with a 3.3/3.0 with grade replacements (senior in college). With a mid 20 on the MCAT, does he have a chance this cycle?

I told him to consider doing a post-bacc or masters that guarantee acceptance into medical school (like maintain a certain gpa in the program and having a certain MCAT). Do any of you guys have any more insight on what he should do. His ECs I would say are average and he has a unique non-clinical activity he participates in. He said he is considering podiatry only if he doesn't get in during this cycle and the next.

Unless he's black, no. All other underrepresented minorities have roughly equivalent chances as caucasians.

If he's native that could open up some doors as well

Just wondering if there are any other UD's out therre anxiously waiting for ii's. I've only gotten one thus far and Im complete at 10 schools...Im getting nervous, but is it still relatively early? I know both PCOM's just started sending out ii's like 1-2 weeks ago and same with NYCOM and TouroNY

When were you complete? Only one for me so far, and my stats are pretty competitive for DO.

I applied to 14 DO programs, and have one post-secondary rejection, 1 post-secondary interview hold, and one ii. Was complete everywhere mid-August (9/13-9/16, depending on when they downloaded letters). I'm getting a little nervous myself.

Thanks for the info

yeah I am applying in 2015. Standing at a 3.3cgpa/3.4sgpa right now. Hopefully get it up to a 3.5/3.5.

Yep. You can still get interviews and acceptances (obv) but I 100% guarantee it will come up in an open-file interview as a point you're expected to defend or mitigate in some way.

Accepted to kcumb today! I'm from Kansas City and this is my top choice to I will be withdrawing my apps to all other schools.

My best advice to all the underdogs that feel like they won't ever get in is utilize the forgiving grade replacement policy for osteopathic schools. It might take a while but if you are determined, you can get in. Replace those C's and take an mcat prep course. It took me three years after graduating from college but it was so worth it. Good luck to you all. Don't ever give up

When was your interview?

When was your interview?

9/16. I'm pretty excited because I'm from Missouri and kind of put all my eggs in one basket. I applied to 10 schools and got secondaries from every school but I only sent the essays in to kcumb and kirksville. It worked out and saved me probably $1,000 but I wouldn't recommend it. Thank god everything worked out

Congratulations! That is very convenient. Can we ask what your stats are?

3.65 27 mcat. Retook in July because I originally had a 26 with a 6 in physical science and they require at least a 7 in everything. They seem to be pretty strict about the cutoff. I know a couple people with a 6 that didn't get in but had over 25 mcats

I wish the grade replacement allowed you to replace semester credits with quarter credits. I got a D in chemistry one semester as a freshman and then straight A's in the gen chem series after transferring to a quarter system school, yet ACOMAS wouldn't let me replace that D.

Not for DO. For DO Hispanics have averages around 3.4/25 as opposed to
Blacks with a 3.2/22-23.

Yeah which was quite surprising. I've seen some MD apps that had hispanics with 3.6/33+ getting into Yale, etc.

This is not really true...Hispanics have averages similar to blacks.
I don't know what it is with people like you that come here and make up their own "facts" when the information is readily accessible: http://www.aacom.org/data/applicantsmatriculants/Documents/2012-Applicant-Matriculant-Report.pdf

Asian: c3.47/3.35/27.57
White: c3.51/s3.39/26.8
Native American: c3.44/s3.47/25.64
Hispanic: c3.42/s3.26/25.22
Black: c3.23/3.07/23.02

As you see, the only one with a significant drop among all 3 categories is African-Americans. Even if you want to make an argument that Hispanics are lower than the other categories, the GPA and MCAT is steepest in blacks and not "similar" to Hispanics.

DMU is interesting this year. I've seen 3.6/27, 3.6/28, and 3.4/30 rejected, 3.6/32 put on hold and 3.3/3.15/28 and 3.5/3.4/25 accepted.

Dear god, that is a very high science gpa average for Native Americans. My friend is black and falls within the matriculate average. He applied very broadly (new DOs as well). I hope he gets in.

Hispanics got a break as well, but not as much as AA.

Has your friend had any iis so far?

Pretty excited I have 3 ii's lined up so far!: PNWU, MUCOM (got the ii today!), LUCOM. I was desperately waiting..still hoping to hear from more soon

Can people post their stats when they have an ii because the underdog thread this year is terrible?...

I think by now it should be obvious that it's hard to judge chances based off someone else's stats. Who really cares....

I got lost in stats last year and didn't end up getting in even though I was competitive. It's so hard to really judge (within reason). Just gives me heart break and head aches. Sometimes acceptances just don't make sense. Also, I agree this years thread has been kind of weird

Okay, firstly, what I said about your post was incorrect, however I don't see the need for you personally attacking me. 'people like you'? Common, calm down. I was thinking about MD stats when I posted that they were similar. But, now I know that the DO stats are different.

I could go show you how you're incorrect about the MD stats too if you'd like.

Can I be added to the underdawgs? I applied late (september) but I should be verified in the next week or so.

My numbers are:
3.12 cgpa
3.68 sgpa
31 MCAT (11 PS, 10 VR, 10 BS)

decent ecs (100+ hrs clinical volunteering, extensive nonclinical, non trad)

some major weaknesses though (low cgpa, no direct shadowing).

Is there even a point to continuing to move forward this late, I'm thinking about just waiting until next cycle and working on my app (pick up more clinical exp and shadowing, possibly retake mcat?)

At the end of the day though, no matter what I do to improve my app this yr, I would still be an underdawg.

So roll the dice and see what happens or wait and apply early?

I only submitted a primary to one school, was going to add more once I got verified.

Is the 2013 Report available yet?

It's October, few people who are actual underdogs have really been accepted yet save for let's day Touch which I should update soon.

you're not really an underdog with a high sgpa and Mcat score.

A 62 Lizzy m with a 3.7 sgpa. And you think you are an underdog.... Just wow, no comment

Ok I just finished sending serenade the updated list with interviews and acceptances. So quit your whining.
