2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You are too neurotic.

The fact that someone from SDN says this should tell you something

Also, for those of you with a low verbal score, have any of you taken the Kaplan course? It helped me immensely. I scraped a 10 in verbal using passage mapping. Well, I started off using it at least. It was a good framework to use to evaluate the passages and power-skim. By the end I wasn't actually writing out the maps, but I was approaching the passages in a different way.

Kaplan was the opposite for me. After trying the mapping strategy, I noticed that I went down a couple of points in vr. My advice to anyone struggling with vr would be to do alot of passages. Eventually you'll come up with your own approach.

Even though my stats are above average (see my mdapps), does a recent 3.2 graduate GPA qualify me as an underdawg? meh...im guessing not

I have 3.3c and 3.3s 27 MCAT. I am applying to 21 DO schools. CA resident :-(. Please add me to your list. you guys are very supportive group of people. I guess I will need that this cycle. Thanks!

Look at the posts above for a 27 MCAT a 3.2 Gpa is the underdog cutoff for DO.

Need to update my status: once I entered my work into AACOMAS, it came back with 3.6 cGPA, 3.19 sGPA. My MCAT retake came back today as 24. 10V/8P/6B.

2 more points in BS would have made your application very solid... I think you have to retake since it might be hard for a lot of schools to look pass that 6 in BS.

What about a 6 in physical science? Im sitting at 11 verbal 9 bio and 6 phys. I really don't want to retake the mcat and I only have a 3.3 sci and cum gpa but I still think I may get in somewhere. Maybe I am delusional.

You should be ok with a 6 in PS... Your overall score is good for DO. No need to retake IMO.

Ok. MCAT just came out.

3.2/27

Am I underdog?

None of you are underdogs- even person with bio 6 (being from Louisiana, you should get preference from regional schools like PCOM ga and WCU, and your stats aren't terribly far off the mark for other newer schools like ACOM and LMU.) I am confident all of you will be fine.

Disagree.... The applicant with 6 in BS is definitely an underdog, but the other ones are not.

agree that the bio 6 will limit their opportunities, but am still confident they will get in.

It's an application killer, Goro himself said that it's an autoscreen at his school. I mean it's 3 points below the average score for that section of all test takers.

Kinda what I was afraid of, I made a 7 on BS the first time. Guess I need to call around and see which take what MCAT scores into consideration.

Rejected from Campbell pre-secondary. Saved the $50 though

sGPA <3.2 and they didn't like it

They really have that 3.2 c/sGPA requirement... I am taking them off my list then. What is your mcat score?

3.5c, 3.08s 26 (8p,9v,9b)

Their site says minimum for acceptance is 3.00 but they view a 3.2+ in cumulative and sci as competitive

Those of you hovering around 3.2/27 are underdogs like I was. You will be questioned about your grades during interviews, but assuming your MCAT is balanced and you have appropriate ECs, you will probably get those interviews.

It's not a hard line pre-secondary. I have a 3.14 cgpa but a 3.68sgpa and a 31mcat. They do mention it specifically to be competitive though so I might get dropped post-secondary

I have thought about it but since it only $35.00 to add them, I think I am willing take the chance

I think it depends on your grade trends as well. I was asked about my 3.2 but I had a 4.0 my senior year so the convo was brief. Also I find it hard to believe how selective Campbell suddenly is. I have a friend who was accepted with a 3.2 22 mcat.... And he is from Missouri. I don't get it. I can't believe they didn't send you a secondary with such a high mcat and a 3.5 cum. That is mind blowing. Your stats are good you can get into a more established school

I just applied to 25+ DO campuses... loaded up the credit card like a boss. Gonna max that b out tomorrow with 25+ MD apps

Hovering around 3.2/27 balanced MCAT

Paying for the MDs will be tough since I am a big time underdog for MD

another example to support my belief that DO competitiveness begins around 3.00/3.00/23 thanks to all the new schools. very few people on these "underdog" threads are really underdogs. your friend's acceptance is no surprise.

That new for profit school in Colorado has one of the most competitive requirements of DO schools, a 28 median MCAT which is on the top end for DO and they say a good GPA starts around 3.4 science and cumulative

Another new one is similarly compet. It seems the old schools are easier than the new ones to get into

not so. I have pored over these forums and mdapplicants over the past year. people are getting into the new schools with low 3.0's and 23-24 (or even less, as in this example) MCAT's by the boatload.

hopefully you can see that you will be fine.

You have to account for the URM bump too if the person is black. Just saying.

May I join the league of underdawgs? Non-trad, 3.26c 3.34s 16(yes a 16) (7/1/8) (waiting recount, retake 8-15) Strong EC's; applied to 12MDs and 20DOs, hoping for an interview.

yes, you are an underdog. but 23+ on retake should get you in somewhere.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but what was going on when you took that verbal? My 13 year old little brother took a VR for fun and scored a 3.

Do not apply unless you retake for over a 26. Also please tell me you called to have them regrade your verbal. A 1 is an almost impossible score to obtain.

I would have to disagree with this. These are outliers, I wouldn't say these stats are "competitive". I had 3.2s 3.2 cum 26 mcat and didn't get in anywhere. I didn't apply to any new schools but I think in order to be "competitive" you need a gpa > 3.25 and an mcat 24 or above. Not saying you can't get in with lower stats but the average applicant has much higher than 3.0 23

far be it from me to hate on someone's scores but did you just mash the keyboard during verbal?

I did have an upward from 2.5 to 3.2. Never had the all-star grades for any semester though (except for maybe one or two random ones that were ~3.7). Nice username btw.

If you are not an African American URM, these stats might not fly for MD... You will most likely get into a DO school... But you never know for MD... I guess it will be a hail mary pass...

20% chance for the OP to get in. So there's a chance, but overall it's DO territory.

A 20% chance is not a good odd for me to throw my money at something... In fact, I might not even apply DO if my mcat score is < 24 since I know the odds won't be in my favor even if I am a URM African American with GPAs above 3.0.

Actually with a 3.5/22 as an AA you'll certainly get accepted. Regardless that 20% stands mostly to indicate that it is possible but unlikely. Too many factors exist far beyond mcat and gpa.

why? i am sure you would have gotten in somewhere if you applied broadly.

You scored a 1 on verbal? YOU SCORED A MF 1 ON VERBAL?????!?1??!?!!??!?!

:boom:

Yes, a 1; I'm waiting for a re-score, and hoping there was a mistake on mcat's part, if it was my mistake I'll own it and definitely won't make that mistake again. I've never scored below a 6 before so we'll see.

hello there fellow SDN'ers

i was wondering if i am considered an underdog
3.1cGPA, 3.6sGPA , 23MCAT (first take) 27MCAT (retake)-fairly balanced. will i get love from schools? i am a NY resident with NYITCOM as first choice and TouroCOM NY as 2nd choice. do not want to leave NY.

With that high of a Sgpa and a solid mcat chances are you'll be fine. Also if your BS is a 10 or higher you'll probably get a lot of love at Touro.

I didn't apply to any new schools because I am currently in a masters program at KCUMB which is my home town. I would rather wait and go to a school that I like and is well respected/ established than take a spot at a school that is brand new and could potentially hurt my chances of landing a residency I want. Not saying all new schools are sub par but it was worth it to me to wait one more year and go somewhere I wanted. Just my opinion
