2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh yeeeah baby here I am. it's good to be home!

cGPA 3.1, sGPA 2.96, MCAT 11 10 10, top 15 school, 2 pubs with lots of research, 300 clinical hours, will get DO letter by end of july. strong post bacc 3.7 GPA for past 80 credits. PA resident. I was an engineering major and failed a bunch of engineering classes so my sGPA took a hit.

Be sure to apply to AZCOM, NSU, CCOM, and other mcat schools. But yah, I'll add you in a bit.

With that high of a Sgpa and a solid mcat chances are you'll be fine. Also if your BS is a 10 or higher you'll probably get a lot of love at Touro.

I hope so. My scores are 8,9,10 (PS,VB,BS) so yes I am hoping for love at Touro! 🙂 Good luck to everyone this cycle. Lets get it.

So do schools only send secondaries if they are serious about interview? Cause I applied to 27 campuses that would be rough to pay for 27 secondaries and that's not counting MD

Do people generally get sent secondaries from about half the schools they send primaries too?

Very few schools screen, so literally expect 25-27 secondaries.

Nova says on their website that applicants have to have at least 3.0c/sGPA. But since they are very mcat oriented or obsessed, who knows what they might do....

Why 27? A number of schools have state/regional bias. Look up the schools so you don't waste money on state schools (unless you're instate). I have similar numbers as you and I have about 15-17 schools on my list.

I will be more careful with MD schools but I am willing to take more chance with my money on DO even if they have regional bias since* my MCAT is at their medians.

But you do have a good point and I was not really using my brain at all when I applied to all those schools. I had just got done with a long week of work, I was on 2 cups of venti coffees from Starbucks and my MCAT had just came back at the median for most schools so I just went to town on aacomas!

3.44c 3.35s ill get my MCAT score back in a month. It will not be good :/ just got that hit feeling.

Non trad in a allied health profession. Lots of patient contact hours. LOR should be awesome. EC should be good. URM/female.

Unless you score 24 or have a section below 6, I wouldn't call you an underdog.

25+ MCAT should make you competitive almost everywhere....

Seriously? With a 3.3 science? Idk about the MCAT honestly...

Mhm interesting. Always considered myself a long shot.

That is the average sGPA for most DO schools.... You are are good to go as long as your mcat score is 25+...

Ok! I guess I'm just used to msucom stats with are above that mark I think 3.6 and 27. I'm only applying to 3 maybe at the most 4 DO schools...

Applying to only 3-4 schools with these stats (3.44+ cGPA, 3.35 sGPA and 25-27 mcat) would be a big risk... However, if you get a 28+ mcat score, that risk is diminished IMO...

May I join the league of underdawgs? Non-trad, 3.26c 3.34s 16(yes a 16) (7/1/8) (waiting recount, retake 8-15) Strong EC's; applied to 12MDs and 20DOs, hoping for an interview.

I have a feeling the computer messed up and didn't read some of your answers or you skipped a few passages... like 6-7 of them.

I've never seen a 1 in any section before.

No. Applying to only 3-4 DO, then 6 MD. I'm a divorced non trad with a daughter so it is what it is. Gotta stay near family.

What were you getting on your practice exams? Are you ESL? I agree are you sure your computer scored correctly?

Family is always first! 👍 GL

My practice exams were 6-8, not ESL, I have to assume it was either a computer error or I marked questions but didn't go back through and answer them. Still waiting on re-score report.

Family is first, of course, but I would recommend focusing on DO schools. With your stats you're very competitive for DO schools but you're a long shot for MD schools. I would put the resources you have into applying for DO.

Thats why I have 3-4 schools. MSUCOM (3 campuses in Michigan), LECOM, TUNCOM, CCOM, are my primary targets, followed by Marian, Ohio, PCOM.

The Allo schools are MSUCHM, Central Michigan, Western Michigan (1st year program), Oakland, Wayne. I'm still looking into some allo schools OOS. but this is probably my list.

Im an underdog!!

3.4 cGPA
3.6 nsGPA
3.25 sGPA
22MCAT (2 x)

I work in clinical research, have 2 DO rec letters, one chemistry professor RL
200+ community service hours
50 hours shadowing

Not too sure on my chances. if I dont get in, I'm going to retake MCAT and re-do my undergrad organic chems

You have a very slim chance with that mcat score. Apply to the new schools such as CUSOM, ACOM, Marian, WCU-COM, LMU-DCOM, VCOM. You can also apply to Pikeville if you are a southerner.

Hey everybody,

I was thinking of applying this year, but I have no MCAT score yet. I am debating wether or not to delay a year. Stats:

3.4 cGPA, 3.1 sGPA, still have 2 more pre recs.

what MCAT and breakdown does this underdog need to land a spot? Not Fussy about where I get in, just wanna get in somewhere. I would pick MSUCOM or OHCOM over other schools should the opportunity present itself.

When will you have an mcat score? What is your practice test score? State of Residency?

I have put this up on other threads already sorry,
I really want to attend Nova'a MBS program. I've read you take most of the M1 classes with the med students and if you achieve an 80% or higher in the program, you're guaranteed a spot in their DO school. I've also ready they only take 17 kids are a year and its really difficult to get in. If anyone can give me someone feedback and maybe their opinion and let me know if i stand a chance. I would really appreciate it.
Undergrad GPA (tough undergrad university)
Cumulative GPA: 3.2
Science GPA: 3.3
Took many upper level/grad science courses during undergrad
MCAT: 22

Extra curricular
Over 1000 hours of volunteer clinical and non clinical
Few years research and emergency technician trainee

I don't know alot about this program but I think it would be better to retake the mcat and apply then. It would be easier than trying to compete in a MS program. Another easier option is LECOM's post bac program. They accept students with 3.0/23.

I didnt think I was an underdog this year.
3.4 gpa
3.3sgpa
27 MCAT
Medical Intern at an Aids and TB clinic in Africa for 2 months
Finished an EMT course
Shadowed 2 DO's for 100 hours
Volunteered in the ER at a local hospital
Apparently I have had 1 school reject one of my LOR because the teacher was from my Essentials of Nutrition class. They don't count it as a science but at my uni the course code is BSC. 😡 I asked him to update the letter to show its a biology class but Im a little annoyed non the less.

Not an underdog IMO...

cgpa: 2.91
sGPA 3.91
mcat:28

That cgpa going to destroy me 🙁 . Scared most places will auto-reject me. Pretty sure im a underdawg cause of it..

Well Im hoping the other schools wont give me a problem. Otherwise I think I'm in the clear.

You'd be sittin' pretty with a 27+ but could still have hope with 25+

Thinking about next spring. My baseline was a 19 without studying, so I have some work to do, but I didnt have orgo, how hard would it be to get a 27+?

You dont think my science GPA will keep me out?

Without orgo you've got no chance of breaking a 10 on the BS.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I got a 9 on the practice, but most were biological function questions and I actually learned most of the things from my nutrition class lol.

Keep your heads up guys and gals

3.1cgpa. 31mcat and getting love in the secondary app offers!

Let's go!

3.4/3.5/27. GPA hasn't been verified yet.

I thought I'd be outside the list but some people on the front page have higher scores than me so I'll leave it up to the high courts.

I got a 17 diagnostic and ended with a 27 actual, with a 19 baseline you can break 27 if you work hard.

The 3.1 is low but if you get an MCAT above their medians you should have a decent shot. A lot of DO medians are around 24-26

I think you're an average if not slightly above average applicant. I think you'll do fine in the cycle.
