2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lol. I have links to the outline of Catholic exorcisms bookmarked and I accidentally clicked it after I googled LUCOM.

Smh. Liberty college of osteopathic demon hunters might actually be somewhat cool.

I think all DO schools should certify us in demon slaying. Haha

Again with jumping to false conclusions. I'm not going to defend any personal issues you have with me, but rest assured ill be here to call things out. 👍

he's simply a rash and eager young man who has yet to work out the balance inside of him. Being a physician does require some of that energy an enthusiasm. Be kind to him, he is doing a fine job of organizing the stats on here and his ego will get tuned in time. Good idea on factchecking though...watching this forum over the years...it's downright scary the amount ofopinion shot around disguised as golden truth. Best of luck.

Sure, take everything with a handful of salt. I do my best to report and keep my statements statistically supported, and occasionally I'll leak a few opinions where need be. But in the context of nontrad and my disagreement I was simply repeating something stated multiple times on this board by more statistically knowledgable members of the DO board.

But thanks for the... Compliments? Lol

I'm just gonna throw this question out there: What schools do I remotely have a chance at with 3.77, 3.70, 24, and slightly above average ECs? I am retaking that MCAT, I'm terrified I won't improve my score that much (at all). Obviously hoping do to well, but....

RVU, VCOM (both), LECOM, CUSOM, MUCOM, ACOM for being competitive and then any other school you have decent chance at outside of say PCOM, CCOM, Western, and Touro CA and the state schools.

This.

Also, take a break guys. This thread is for making people feel good, stay positive, and generally as a source of useful info. No one wants to see fights between individuals that contribute a lot to this forum.

No, no, no, the demon is Liberty itself. It's a blemish on osteopathic medicine.

:whoa:

Oops. Thought this was the underdog thread for a second

:hijacked:

LECOM Seton Hill has not sent out emails yet, but many of us have got interview invites listed in our portals. I don't believe, I am the only underdawg with an invite.

The irony is today, I told my boss I was 100% free and clear to go on a work trip Aug 13th, three hours later I find out I have my first interview invite Aug 13th.

Congrats!!

white dude, texas, 3.5c/3.3s/26 does that count as underdog?..9 DO plus 12 MD (soooo many secondaries), no real reach schools I kept my expectations realistic...some school's gotta give right?

we are basically stats twins. What DO schools are you applying to? I think you are a super underdog for MD but slightly below average for DO - good enough to get in applying this early and as long as you are applying broadly and realisticly.

You all shouldnt be afraid to apply with 24-26s if you feel like you are well rounded and have a decent gpa. Apply early--you'd be surprised by how many interviews you may get. Hard work goes far in the DO world. Ive heard this for 4years.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using SDN Mobile

sGPA: 3.05 (I think this might make me an underdog)
cGPA: 3.41
MCAT: 28 (9/10/9) V/P/B

150 hrs of shadowing experience
550 hrs of volunteer clinical
200 hrs paid clinical experience
100 hrs of tutoring
held a job for 6 years throughout high school and undergrad

science gpa cud hurt ya bud i'd say underdawggy status for that reason alone but ur MCAT will help significantly.

good to know there are others out there in the same boat.. applied to 9 DO programs, TCOM would be my first choice since i'm from texas and i'd like to stay close but I've also got OK State, KCOM, AZCOM, CCOM, VCOM (both), LECOM, and nova..submitted aacomas july 1, submitted secondaries for osucom and tcom, just waiting for the transcripts and letter packets to arrive at the other schools

also maybe of note i'm currently doing the smp at unthsc, where tcom is located..feeling like an underdog everywhere, fingers crossed it all goes well!

I would add some lower stat schools as well. NOVA, AZCOM, and CCOM tend to love high MCAT scores and OK is very regionally biased. I would add ACOM, CUSOM, and LMU if I were you

I'm going to be hearing from Australian medical schools soon that I applied at. (International matriculant stats at Aussie MD hover around DO ranges).

Are your referring to the UQ-Ochsner program? From what I've heard they don't have much in the way of board prep for the USMLE but that if you're self-motivated enough to prepare for it on your own, it's a good program, or so I've heard while trolling the international forum here on SDN. Either way, good luck. Australia would be a nice adventure.

I have a 25 and got rejected at RVU. They told me my MCAT needed to improve by 2-3 points to have a shot

LMU, PCOM-GA, ACOM, CUSOM, WCU, LECOM, VCOM are your best shots in my opinion

Well, if it is any indication, the AMCAS app is going to be crazy this year. They are still verifying people that turned theirs in 6/12, the 3rd day it was open for submission.

I also know more people applying MD with DOs as a backup. It is apparently the very popular thing to do this year so we may have to compete with 3.7+ GPAs and 30+ MCATs for the people that are paranoid about not getting into an MD.

Will there be more high applicants? Of course.

But based on the applicant data released, theres still the same number of 16k applicants and the mean MCAT was 26 so I wouldn't worry too much about the averages jumping to 29-30 in just one year (and last year was already quite competitive).

Just remember, low stats people have a great chance (sometimes even at MD!) if they are smart and offer other things. In the case of DO, something like a DO letter would set you apart from many applicants.

Admissions isn't stupid and if they see that the AACOMAs app is neglected (rushed and not really well written and low ECs) as well as no DO letter, they are aware they are being used as a backup.

Just for an example, had a friend with high stats that got no love from the 4 DO schools he applied to, but got some MD love. I'm not saying DO schools don't like high stat applicants , but not everyone pays enough attention to AACOMAs as AMCAS.

Did RVU reject post secondary? Just curious as I have a 25 but received a secondary invite from RVU...just haven't submitted it yet and would like to save my $50 if the reject came post or pre secondary....

Thanks.

Interviewing with Flinders!

What do you guys think about that? The only downside is stigma of international graduate, but DO also has stigma sooo...

I applied there too. I have heard usmle studying can actually be easier in some ways, that's not an issue.

The biggest downsides are cost and stigma of IMG.

Well he lives in a neighboring state; only reason I recommended. And PCOM GA's mean MCAT is 28.

What was your other stats like, such as ECs and GPAs

I'm applying next year but I'll still be an underdog. By the time I apply I expect to have a 3.31 GPA and a 3.33 SGPA. I'll have plenty of retakes, a DO LOR, and a killer PS. I'm an URM (black female) and I'm taking my MCAT in August. Any ideas on what would be considered a decent MCAT score? Oh and I'm a MD resident so I'll apply to regional schools but there are no state schools.

Just to be frank you could get a 24 and be competitive for most DO schools as an African American. Hell get a 28+ and spend your money in more MD applications.

Even with lots of retakes? I'm a AA male and if that's the case I need to add schools if I break 30

What's their match rate anyway? Also what's their degree MD or MBBS.

your white coat will say MD (this is what students really want to know when they ask if its MD or MBBS)

Everyone matched from the first class but there were only 9 students, small sample so nobody knows what will happen in the future.

It was one path, one gen surg. And 5 or 6 IMs ... forgot what else

MD might be on your white coat but "FMG" might as well be tattooed on your forehead. I don't understand why people are so quick to go to medical school outside of the United States. It is such a horrible horrible idea. I wouldn't advise my worst enemy to be a foreign medical grad.

You wouldn't wish year round beaches and sunshine in Brisbane on your worst enemy?

Joking aside, being international doesn't make you any less competent of a physician. It's an arbitrary stigma that is only looked down upon by status ******. There are just as many physicians who see it as a plus as there are those who look down on it.

I hope this is supposed to be a joke...

So as having been successful in previous years we're opening up the underdogs thread for this medical school admission cycle! I want this to be a place were we can respectfully discuss admissions issues and how to be successful in getting into medical school.

Underdog here
27 [11,6,10], cGPA: 3.94, sGPA: 3.91

Underdog for MD but not even close to being an underdog DO. Those stats are stellar. If I was in your position, I would think about retaking the mcat and going for a cheap in state md school. If you don't want to do that, pick any do school and you will get an interview.
