2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wanted to apply to COMP-NW but i think my gpa and mcat are too low. LECOMs were also on my list, but I don't have a DO letter of rec, and don't know how long it will be until I am able to get one.

Apply to COMP-NW. Being below their averages doesn't mean you shouldn't apply. If I thought that way, I wouldn't have applied anywhere last cycle.

Rejections came out already??

Screens are fast man. I got some post-secondary screens last cycle that came in between 24-48hrs after I paid my secondary fees.

I'm pretty glad my first rejection was pre-secondary and that they told me why I was rejected. Can't win em all eh?

Finally decided to join the ranks. Haha long time following the thread! Gives me hope 😀

Low GPAs (~3.1 for both science and cumulative) with a 26 --> 30 balanced MCAT retake (January 2013)

Applied to about 15 schools and hoping for the best.. Worried though T_T

youre fine...

Mm yeah it's unpredictable. I just hope places can overlook the low GPAs. 😕

If you have an upward trend, postbacc or smp than this will be the case. If you are just a 3.1 student with a good mcat then it will probably be a crapshoot.

I feel like a loner since I'm the opposite of what you usually see for underdogs, with a decent gpa but lower MCAT. It's hard to know what to expect in terms of love from schools, and it seems like MCAT matters more than gpa 🙁

A lot of people had moderately good cycles with 3.1 30-33s. Dr. Wily had a 3.1/33 and only got into one place I think.

Yeah. That happens. I know people in a similar situation last year that also just got in to one program after applying to 20+, another that was waitlisted, and yet another that had at least 2 acceptances. User3 likes to think that everyone with borderline stats gets in, but the truth is that its a crapshoot, and it could depend on a ton of things, including interview ability, who your interviewer is, connections, school list, etc.

They can. Just make sure you interview well and show you really want and deserve to be there.

There are tons of people with high GPAs and lower MCATs in the app cycle. TONS. I'd say more than people with very low GPAs and high MCATs. You might hear from them more on here this year, but its not representative of all applicants. Don't worry. You'll be fine, as long as you break the cutoffs and have an even spread.

I found User3 to be a bit "optimistic"

Don't worry. I'm in the same boat...

It does suck.

Me too!!! 3.9 gpa and terrible MCAT. I'm retaking August 16th but I'm pretty nervous :-/

Alright it's official, I just submitted my app. I am a Hispanic male with a 3.2 cGPA/3.3 sGPA with a strong upward trend and a 23 (10P 6V 7B) I'm retaking 8/22 and praying for a better score but Im still applying broadly. My ECs and PS should be on point. I have 2 years as an EMT 3 years prior to that as a PT tech, 1st author on research and a degree in health science and finishing one in sports medicine but with below average stats its gonna be a numbers game. Good luck everyone!

Ok, advice please. I'm a Michigan resident planning to apply to MSUCOM.

3.85 science gpa, 3.82 cumulative gpa
22 MCAT (8PS, 7VR, 7BS)
Financially disadvantaged
Non-native speaker of English
Came to the U.S when I was six years old
5+ years work/volunteer experience at an MSUCOM affiliated DO teaching hospital

What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

retake your MCAT

Been waiting for my MCAT to post. Not so sure that I'm so much of an underdog as a wishful dreamer... Took MCAT 6-20-13 and got a 21 (ps7, vr6, bs8) cGPA 3.22 sGPA 3.18

Should I withdraw my app from aacomas? Right now it is only processing. I applied to all DO schools except like 4... non trad for what that's worth

Touchpause13's MCAT PS

If you got a 24 or below it is in your best interest to retake

Oh believe me I will be retaking; no question. I'm just not sure if I should let my app get verified and sent out or if I should withdraw it while it is still processing

Do you think you can prepare for the September mcat and retake then? If yes, I would let it verify but make sure to indicate the retake. If you don't think you'll be ready for the September mcat, withdraw and apply next cycle. You can prepare for the Jan mcat and see how that goes.

No. September is out of the question since I am finishing up school full time and working part time. Thinking I'll start up studying again after graduation in December.

Well I screwed myself. 3.4c 3.37s and a drumroll please 21 Mcat (ps8, vr5, bs8). kazillion EC hours (non trad).

Sooo. now what?

Do I retake ASAP (soonest date being Sept 11) or wait til next cycle? I have not submitted yet because I feared that I did not do well. Do I submit and not that I am retaking, or do I just wait until I retake?

IMO, I would withdraw, retake and try again next year. I'd rather have money in my pocket to use on a retake when I'm sure I'm ready...though if you can afford to spend the money on the primary and ALL the secondaries you (may) have to send, go for it. (but don't expect too much)

It depends completely on whether you feel like you can score better on 9/11.

Only retake in September if you are POSITIVE you are going to do MUCH better

If so, submit now because it will take a few weeks to get verified. let them know you are doing the retake and you'd be better off. October is too late to submit a primary because you won't get verified until November (trust me, I did it last year).

How about I got a 24 (7 was the lowest section) and 3.5 sgpa 3.4 cgpa? I have already applied to 9 schools including all the newer schools and app has been verified retaking is out of the question this cycle- lots of ECs and very strong upward trend pas 2 years- should I continue to add schools to my app ? Or save my money and reapply next cycle? I've obviously already spent close to $500 this cycle just wondering are my chances worth adding more schools to my list? Thanks!

I still would retake in Sept if u think u can improve. If ur not up for that study ur butt off for a jan mcat. It is possible u could get it with ur 24 but u significantly improve ur chances if u bump it even a few points

Yes I know I can do better. I'm that person that fails the first exam to get Bs/As on the rest. I mean basically ill be sitting without secondaries until my retake score yes?

You're fine but add a few schools to be safe.

Guess I am an underdog. My MCAT came back today at a 22. 7, 8 ,7 VR, PS, BS

3.84 cgpa/3.74sgpa 22mcat (7-8-7)

Finally some more realistic underdogs. Apply broadly and hope for the best. Good luck with any retakes.

Apply to more schools, and you have a decent chance at a few interviews IMO. Rock said interviews and hope for an acceptance. Study for September MCAT as a contingency plan because a 24 might get you in, but a 26 will open more doors.
