2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pretty much good to go.

Maybe god can call in an airstrike or sue for liable.

DO stats are going way up. Look through the school specific threads and see the crazy average numbers that schools are releasing, very disheartening.

I'm adding myself to the underdog thread (based on the #'s schools are releasing), especially after my LECOM rejection.

3.32c 3.54s 27 (9/9/9) MCAT.

I have been following your posts🙂, you are getting a lot of interviews you are not a under dog. I am sure you will have a lot of acceptances. Rejection does suck though but on a positive side, you do have more to look forward to and hopefully they can give you feedback.
Good Luck!

I concur

Some classrooms in the first semester may be a little breezy, but if you block out the construction and tractors its definitely doable.

after seeing your stats (realizing they are essentially the same as mine), reading your post scared the crap out of me. then I read your previous posts and saw the awesome ii's you've been getting and realized that both you and I will probably be fine. I hope to receive invites someday soon, but first I need to get these primaries of mine verified. best of luck to you!

I appreciate the vote of confidence. I have 2 more interviews, 1 at Nova later this month and another at Touro-NV that I had to reschedule from Sept to Oct because of flights forcing me to miss more work than I was comfortable with. I have a bunch of apps out in the ether that I hope to hear back from.

I'm 0/1 right now and while some of you may look at that and think it's a great opportunity and a great start, while I agree and thank you again, I view it as a rejection of two years of my life that I have worked my tail off trying to achieve this goal of mine. I have lost more jobs in the past 2 years than I have in the previous 14 because of the demands of taking courses, both at lunch and in the evenings, as my employers rightfully could not keep someone who needed them to bend to my schedule. I could not sacrifice a single semester for employment and there were days I wondered if it was worth it. I had to sacrifice promotions and opportunities to own my own clinics and I've had to sacrifice relationships that I thought were worth having until the decision had to be made to pursue school or them. I've had sleepless nights while studying for the MCAT wondering if it was more important to cover an extra day in order to make rent or put more hours into my prep (I ultimately chose rent and I think my scores suffered for it).

So, I look ahead and think to myself: You've got 2 more shots to make this work. I don't know if I will net anymore interviews, other than the 2 I have secured, so I cannot think beyond it.

I hope I can look back at this thread and realize I was just being a drama queen, but right now I'm still a little angry and raw 😡

Sorry for the rant, I'm sure it's a story you all have heard a thousand times before, but at least I feel better voicing my frustrations 😍

Has to be something in your app. Strongly suggest calling school to get more info. Also, I'm assuming this is post secondary rejection?

should i even apply with this stats?
cGPA= 3.18
sGPA ~3.15

MCAT=24 (PS9/BS10/VR5)
will i get screen out because of my verbal score:scared:?
im retaking the mcat in january, hopefully a 27+ with the verbal at least 7 🙁

my top choice:
LECOM and NOVA

big ups for double digits on your BS

but your verbal score being below 7 (and 6) will be pretty crushing. if you're applying this cycle, branch out and be ready for bad times.

and also if you're retaking in january be aware that not all schools take january scores for the current cycle

If you haven't already then no, furthermore with a Jan retake you're completely out.

Posting to SDN for the first time and from the phone app. Hope this works.

Stats: cGPA 3.85, sGPA 3.87, MCAT-25 (PS9/VR8/BS8)

I'm an older student (30) and had been out of science classes for 4-5 years. I'm also starting a 1-year MS in Biomed this fall.

Applied to:
PNWU COM
WesternU CA & OR
Touro-CA
AZCOM
RVUCOM (btw, why do I keep hearing bad things about RVU? Seems unjustified)
DMU
Chicago COM
OSU COM
MSU COM
AT Still Kirksville

And a couple of allo's

Thoughts?

Add MUCOM

Because you think my chances are slim elsewhere? Or just a good idea in general?

Would MUCOM be able to offer federal loans, etc.?

Yes, yes, and yes.

I would also add a Touro-NV and maybe LMU if you have a DO letter.
Generally most of your schools are very mcat oriented and thus with a 25 you may have some trouble getting in.

Hmmm, well shoot. We'll have to see what happens. I'm not sure which of the schools, or if all of them, do minimal screening on primaries or a more significant screening, but I've gotten 8 secondary invites so far. I think that's good, but might not mean much. :/

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll start looking into those programs more tomorrow. It's hard to know which schools will favor what.

Ideally, I'd end up in a more populated area bc my wife will have an MS in higher ed admin, and more schools around means a better shot for her getting a job.

i really want to apply this cycle, if i get 28-30 MCAT in jan, what schools should i apply

If you want to be accepted to school and are taking the MCAT in January, do not apply this cycle.

Chances are you will be wasting money,
It has happened that Jan apps did get in, but usually it doesn't happen.
Take more time and get a 30-32.

So why did you apply to Kirksvile?
But anyway, like I said, many of these schools are very mcat heavy and you potentially may run into some trouble with them. But regardless, add MUCOM.

Well, I added a few programs in less populated areas just because we didn't want to be on the east coast and the list of schools in more metropolitan areas on the western half was a little small. I toured the AT Still campus in AZ on a whim, and thought I might like a more established program.

Yup, just applied to MU-COM. Looks like a nice school, in a great area for jobs for my wife, and I am sure that being a new school will have its hiccups but won't be too bad. Thx for the advice.

Why did you not apply to Soma then?

Why did you not apply to Soma then?

I didn't like their facility very much. And, there curriculum is weird. You spend your first year there in AZ, then years 2-4 off at one of 12 sites across the nation. To me it didn't sound like that would be a very good experience.

I'm single so I can't speak personally, but upperclassmen tell me KCOM/the spousal club does an awesome job helping SOs find relevant employment.

That's kinda cool, though my significant other is in computers firms. So I mean, unless he wants to work as a lab IT guy or something it probably wouldn't be too cute.

haha, well it's not necessarily on campus. just in town, or in the area at least.

How is SDN defining underdog? I'm non -trad with a 3.77 GPA, 3.65ish grad school GPA, and 25 MCAT (6 PS, 9 V, 10 BS). Can I join the party?

3.3+/3.3+/25+ is absolutely not an underdog.

Can I be an underdog too? Can I? Can I?

sGPA 2.98, cGPA 3.60, MCAT 23 (6 PS, 9 VR, 8 BS)-- just retook MCAT in july

If you're below the average rejected applicant then chances are you're an underdog.

Yah, you're an underdog. However honestly unless you get an mcat over 28 then it might be wise to spend a year doing a post-bacc and repairing your science gpa.

Ok, so I posted earlier and got some good encouragement that all hope is not lost.
That being said, I've applied to 7 schools:
PCOM-GA
VCOM (CC and VC)
LECOM-B
UNECOM
WVSOM
LMU-DCOM

Me: non-trad, Fl. resident, B.A. Political Science, many years Firefighter/Paramedic, good LOR's, decent EC's
cGPA 3.45, sGPA 3.8, MCAT 25 (9VR, 8PS, 8BS)
Some might say "not an underdog" but I sure feel like one!

Any suggestions on other schools to apply to that wouldn't be too much of a reach? (I would rather not go to Nova and haven't even looked to see if I am in their range.)
Thanks

Add the other LECOMs (E and SH), SOMA and ACOM... Your MCAT score is not competitive for Nova (their average is 28) and they like high mcat score according to many SDN posters...

3.3+/3.3+/25+ is absolutely not an underdog.

I figured the 25 MCAT with 6 PS would make me an underdog... I guess I should be glad you don't think I qualify?

Which DO schools aren't "MCAT obsessed"? Or might be forgiving of a low subscore? Hard to figure that out from the Internet. Thanks.

Protip take everything user3 says with a mountain of salt.

As for your school choices, look for newer schools like acom cusom lmu pcom ga

Remember guys, just because you know a special snowflake, doesn't mean everyone has the opportunity to be that special to the adcoms.

I know someone who got in with a 22 on the MCAT. Would I apply with a 22? Never.
